Abstract

Obesity is a health problem characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat due to an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. One of the factors involved in weight control is dietary fiber intake. Fiber is known to increase satiety, regulate appetite, and help control energy intake. This study aims to examine the role of dietary fiber in regulating satiety and weight control through a literature review method. Data were obtained from various scientific articles and relevant research findings, and then analyzed descriptively. The results of the study indicate that dietary fiber operates through various mechanisms, including increasing stomach volume, slowing gastric emptying, forming a gel in the digestive tract, and influencing the release of hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. Various studies also indicate that adequate fiber intake is associated with a reduced risk of overweight and obesity, and contributes to improved metabolic health. Additionally, the development of high-fiber foods based on local ingredients has the potential to serve as an alternative for increasing the public’s fiber intake. Nevertheless, obesity is a multifactorial condition that is also influenced by behavioral and psychological factors, such as emotional eating. Therefore, efforts to control obesity should focus on increasing fiber intake, adopting a balanced diet, managing emotions, and adopting a healthy lifestyle in general.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion, impaired insulin action, or both. One strategy for preventing postprandial hyperglycemia involves inhibiting the enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase, which play a key role in carbohydrate digestion. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants on the inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes as a preventive measure against diabetes mellitus. A literature review was conducted, in which various scientific articles from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, MDPI, Wiley Online Library, and ResearchGate were collected, analyzed, and evaluated. The results of the study indicate that several medicinal plants, such as Swietenia mahagoni, Annona muricata, Moringa oleifera, Gastrodia elata, and Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. contain bioactive compounds such as phenols, flavonoids, limonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, quinones, and triterpenoids, which can inhibit the activity of the enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Mahogany seed extract exhibited 77.52% inhibition of α-amylase at a concentration of 500 µg/ml, while bangle extract demonstrated an inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase with an IC₅₀ value of 98.31 µg/ml. These findings suggest that bioactive compounds from herbal plants have the potential to be developed as natural antidiabetic agents by inhibiting digestive enzymes, thereby helping to control blood glucose levels.

Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency can cause health problems that affect vision, such as night blindness and xerophthalmia. One way to prevent this disease is by consuming foods rich in provitamin A, especially β-carotene. This study aims to discuss the role of bioactive compounds found in carrots (Daucus carota L.) in reducing the risk of xerophthalmia and night blindness by conducting a literature review, namely by analyzing various related scientific articles. Research shows that carrots are a fairly high source of β-carotene, which can be converted into vitamin A according to the body’s needs. Vitamin A can also play an important role in helping the formation of rhodopsin, which is needed for clear vision in dim light conditions. In addition, this vitamin is also important for maintaining the integrity and function of the eye’s epithelial tissue. Furthermore, β-carotene also has the ability to protect eye cells from damage caused by oxidation due to its antioxidant properties. Consuming carrots can help increase vitamin A levels in the body, prevent night blindness and xerophthalmia, and provide benefits for general eye health. Nutrition education, particularly the importance of consuming foods containing vitamin A, is needed to raise public awareness and prevent vitamin A deficiency.
