Abstract

Abstract Hypertension is a chronic condition with a high prevalence, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure. Recent data suggest that hypertension affects not only adults but also adolescents, with a rising prevalence. Major risk factors include an unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, genetic predisposition, and lack of physical activity. Preventive efforts are essential to increase awareness among adolescents about maintaining heart health through physical activity. This community service program aimed to enhance adolescents' understanding of hypertension risks and prevention through the "Heart Care Movement" with Healthy Heart Exercise. Conducted at SMAN 7 Tasikmalaya, the program involved 86 grade XII students. Methods included interactive education using leaflets and the implementation of Healthy Heart Exercise led by instructors from the Bachelor of Nursing program at Universitas Bakti Tunas Husada. Evaluations involved pre-test and post-test knowledge assessments and monitoring participants' heart rates. Results indicated a significant improvement in students' knowledge about hypertension and the benefits of physical activity. The average knowledge score increased from 59.77 in the pre-test to 83.02 in the post-test. Active participation in education and exercise sessions demonstrated strong enthusiasm for the program. Supported by the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model, which actively engaged the school, this initiative proved effective in raising awareness. Integrating such programs into routine school activities could foster a culture of healthy living from an early age and reduce future hypertension risks. Keywords: hypertension, adolescents, prevention, healthy heart exercise, community service.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve health literacy, treatment adherence, and the quality of life among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) through a family-based education model. The intervention was conducted over six months at three community health centers (Puskesmas) in Tasikmalaya City: Kahuripan, Tamansari, and Cihideung. A total of 84 T2DM patients and their families participated in interactive educational sessions, including animated videos, family coaching, glucometer training, and a practical family handbook. Pre and post-tests were conducted using the SCPI (Skills, Confidence & Preparedness Index) instrument. The results showed significant improvements in health literacy (p = 0.000), family involvement (p = 0.000), and dietary adherence (p = 0.000). However, blood glucose levels did not significantly improve statistically (p = 0.305), indicating the need for a longer intervention period to achieve clinical outcomes. This program demonstrates the value of integrating family involvement and low-literacy-friendly media into diabetes education and offers a replicable model for other community-based health programs.

Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with early prevention efforts ideally started during adolescence. Risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, and poor lifestyle habits often emerge during the teenage years and require promotive-preventive strategies within the school environment. Objective: The purpose of this service was to increase cardiovascular health awareness and conduct early screening of cardiovascular risk factors among vocational high school students. Method: This public service was conducted by lecturers and students of the Nursing and Professional Nurse Program at Universitas Bakti Tunas Husada. The activities included questionnaire screening (Z-CHECK), vital signs measurement (blood pressure, heart rate, BMI), fitness testing using the Modified Step Test, health education, and pre–post knowledge assessment. A total of 66 students from grades X and XI at SMK Suryalaya participated in the program on May 27, 2025. Result: The screening showed that 6 students had hypertension, 23 had hypotension, and 9 were obese. One student had irregular pulse, while all others showed normal cardiovascular fitness levels. Knowledge scores improved significantly from a pre-test average of 60 to a post-test average of 82. Conclusion: The program effectively identified early cardiovascular risk factors and significantly increased students’ knowledge about heart health. This model is applicable for school-based health promotion and prevention programs.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of hypertension among adolescents is increasing at an alarming rate, especially in Indonesia, driven by modern lifestyle changes and unhealthy dietary habits. Objective: This study aims to identify and analyze lifestyle-related risk factors contributing to hypertension among adolescents in Banjar City, West Java. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted involving 286 adolescents aged 13-18, selected using random sampling. Data were collected via an online questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression. Results: A total of 70.6% of respondents were categorized as high-risk and 11.9% as very high-risk for hypertension. Significant contributing factors included late-night eating habits (OR=4.85; p<0.005), consumption of high-sodium processed foods (OR=2.48; p<0.005), and inadequate water intake (OR=1.97; p<0.05). Conclusion: Unhealthy lifestyle patterns particularly poor eating and hydration habits are major determinants of adolescent hypertension. School and family-based interventions are essential to instill healthy behavior from a young age.
