Abstract

The highly profitable freshwater commodity in Indonesia is the dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus). In the cultivation process of catfish, feed plays a very significant role, contributing about 70% of all operational costs, with protein as the main component determining the appetite and growth of catfish. This study aims to describe the appetite response of dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus) to the provision of 30% protein pellet feed by observing feeding behavior and feed consumption patterns during the rearing period. The research was conducted in an observational manner at the community aquaculture pond in Hilina'a, Gunungsitoli. This study lasted for 2 months from April to May 2025. Fish were fed three times a day, and the feeding response was observed and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the fish responded well to the feed provided, marked by a high level of enthusiasm during feeding and a stable eating pattern throughout the study period. The controlled environmental conditions also supported the fish's appetite to remain optimal. This research shows that 30% protein pellet feed can stimulate appetite and has the potential to improve the efficiency of catfish farming. Recommendations include the use of 30% protein feed along with good environmental management to achieve optimal and sustainable farming results.

Abstract

Digital transformation has become one of the key strategies for supporting sustainable fisheries resource management. This study aims to examine the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness within the fisheries sector. The research employed a literature review approach by analyzing scientific publications, international organization reports, and related documents on AI applications in capture fisheries, aquaculture, and fisheries supply chains. The findings indicate that AI can enhance the accuracy of fish stock prediction, support the detection of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities, optimize aquaculture systems through automated feeding and disease detection, and improve the efficiency of fisheries product distribution. However, the implementation of AI still faces challenges, including limited digital infrastructure, high investment costs, and insufficient human resource capacity. Overall, AI has significant potential to become an innovative solution for developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable fisheries sector.

Abstract

The intensification of fish farming has led to a high risk of disease outbreaks due to environmental stress and declining water quality. Excessive use of antibiotics has caused problems with antimicrobial resistance, making it necessary to develop more sustainable alternatives for disease control through a nutritional approach. This study aims to analyze the effect of nutrition on the immune response and disease resistance in farmed fish through a literature review. The results of the review indicate that proteins, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals play a crucial role in enhancing the function of the fish immune system. Additionally, probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, phytogenics, and antioxidants in feed can enhance the nonspecific immune response, maintain the balance of gut microbiota, and improve fish resistance to pathogen infections. Thus, the use of immunostimulant-based functional feed is an effective strategy for supporting fish health and the development of sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract

The global aquaculture industry, particularly in Indonesia, faces critical challenges due to its high dependence on fish meal as the primary protein source in feed. Price fluctuations and shortages of fish meal have created an urgent need to find sustainable and economical local alternative raw materials. This literature review aims to evaluate the potential of various local feed ingredients, such as maggots (Black Soldier Fly/BSF), rice bran, coconut meal, and tofu residue, as partial or total substitutes for fish meal in freshwater fish farming (catfish, tilapia, and pangasius), including their effects on health, immune response, and feed palatability. The method used was a systematic review of empirical studies published over the past 10 years (2014-2024) from leading scientific databases. The results of the analysis show that although the amino acid profiles of local ingredients are generally lower than those of fish meal, the application of processing technologies such as fermentation and enzyme supplementation can significantly improve nutrient digestibility. The optimal substitution rate varies among species; however, the majority of studies report that substitutions of up to 30-50% do not negatively impact the Specific Growth Rate (SGR) and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), and in certain cases even improve production cost efficiency by 15-20%. Key challenges include variability in ingredient quality, the presence of antinutritional factors, and palatability constraints, which can be addressed through standardization of production processes and processing technology interventions. The study's conclusions affirm that integrating local raw materials into feed formulations is a viable strategy for enhancing the economic and ecological sustainability of the national aquaculture industry.

Abstract

Feed is the largest cost component in freshwater fish farming, making feed efficiency a key factor in determining productivity and profitability. This article aims to review various strategies for improving feed efficiency through a literature study based on relevant scientific journals and publications. The review indicates that feed efficiency can be enhanced by formulating diets that meet the nutritional requirements of fish, incorporating probiotics and prebiotics into feed, implementing proper feeding management, adopting aquaculture technologies such as biofloc systems and Internet of Things (IoT)-based automatic feeders, and optimizing water quality and stocking density. These strategies have been shown to reduce the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), improve Feed Utilization Efficiency (FUE), and support sustainable growth, survival, and productivity in freshwater aquaculture.

Abstract

Pangasius (Pangasius sp.) is one of Indonesia’s leading freshwater aquaculture commodities, with high economic value and steadily increasing market demand. One of the main challenges in intensive pangasius farming is the high cost of feed, primarily due to reliance on fish meal as the main protein source. Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) are a local raw material with the potential to serve as an alternative nutritional source in fish feed due to their comprehensive content of protein, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, as well as their abundant availability at a relatively low cost. This article is based on a literature review of various research findings regarding the use of moringa leaf meal in feed for catfish and related catfish species. The results indicate that adding moringa leaf meal at certain levels (generally below 10–15% of the total diet) can improve the growth and survival of catfish fry, whereas adding it at excessively high doses tends to reduce growth performance due to the effects of antinutritional compounds such as tannins and phytic acid. Processing treatments such as fermentation have been shown to improve the nutritional quality of moringa leaf meal by reducing crude fiber content and antinutritional compounds. In conclusion, moringa leaf meal has the potential to be used as an economical and sustainable alternative feed ingredient in patin fish farming; however, its use.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of substituting fish meal with black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) maggot meal in artificial feed on the growth and survival rate of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications, namely P0 (0% substitution), P1 (25% substitution), P2 (50% substitution), and P3 (75% substitution) over a 40-day rearing period. The parameters observed included absolute weight growth, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), and water quality. The results showed that treatment P1 (25% substitution) produced the highest absolute weight growth of 24.77 grams with an SGR of 4.42%/day, the lowest FCR of 1.10, and the highest survival rate of 95.6%, which was not significantly different from the control (P0). In contrast, increasing substitution up to 75% (P3) tended to decrease growth performance and survival rate due to the high fat and crude fiber content of BSF maggot meal. Based on these results, it can be concluded that BSF maggot meal can replace fish meal up to a level of 25% without decreasing the growth performance and survival rate of catfish.

Abstract

Intensification of marine fish farming (mariculture) is often faced with the threat of bacterial infectious diseases, especially vibriosis and streptococcosis, which result in high mortality rates and significant economic losses. The conventional use of synthetic antibiotics has triggered antimicrobial resistance (AMR), residue accumulation in export commodities, and damage to marine ecosystems. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of natural ingredients as alternative antimicrobial agents in the treatment of marine fish through a systematic literature review approach. The natural ingredients studied include plant extracts (mangrove leaves Rhizophora apiculata and ketapang leaves Terminalia catappa), essential oils (cloves Syzygium aromaticum and lemongrass Cymbopogon citratus), and bioactive compounds of propolis. The results of the review indicate that mangrove and ketapang leaf extracts have strong inhibitory power in vitro against Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and are able to increase the survival rate of grouper and white snapper up to >85% in vivo. Clove and lemongrass essential oils exhibit very low Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values ​​(50-75 µg/mL) while also functioning as natural sedatives and stress-reducing agents.

Abstract

Giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy) is a freshwater aquaculture commodity of high economic value, yet its growth rate is relatively slow and the cost of fishmeal-based feed continues to rise. Microalgae such as Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris are known to contain high levels of protein, pigments, and bioactive compounds, making them a potential alternative nutrition supplement in giant gourami feed. This review was compiled using the literature review method, aiming to examine and summarize research findings on the effect of microalgae supplementation on the growth, body composition, and immune response of giant gourami. The results show that supplementation of Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris at a certain dose (around 6 g/kg feed) can improve growth, body composition, and the non-specific immune response of giant gourami. However, the optimal dose, microalgae processing method, and economic feasibility of its use at commercial aquaculture scale still require further research.
