Abstract

Abstract

One of the global problems related to the future of cities is the environmental problem, namely the amount of municipal solid waste. From this waste, several issues arise in various aspects, such as health, aesthetics, and social and environmental problems. So that focused research is carried out on the management of urban solid waste produced by households. The research objective is to design a conceptual model and determine the variables and indicators that affect the generation of urban household solid waste and determine what prevention can be done. The model intended consists of 5 variables and 17 indicators. Data was collected based on a survey method with a closed questionnaire distributed to 120 respondents aged ≥ 17 years and residing in Yogyakarta. Analysis of the model and variable relationships was carried out based on the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method with the help of AMOS 24 software. The results showed that the designed model was valid. Socioeconomic variables, KAP level, waste reduction, and seasonality are direct predictors determining waste generation behavior. Socioeconomic variables are also direct predictors of KAP level and seasonal variables, and KAP level variables are direct predictors of waste reduction and seasonal variables

Abstract

Virgin Coconut Oil–Orange Juice Emulsion (EVCO-SJ) is formulated by mixing Virgin Coconut Oil with Orange Juice and other additives. EVCO-SJ was developed as an alternative form of VCO consumption to reduce the oily sensation in the mouth when consuming VCO directly. Determining the product's shelf life is a crucial aspect because it is closely related to determining the expiration date of food products. This study aims to predict the shelf life of EVCO-SJ based on changes in peroxide value using the Accelerated Shelf-Life Testing (ASLT) method. EVCO-SJ is made by mixing VCO and orange juice (8:2) using gum arabic (0.75%) as emulsifier and homogenized using a Tokebi device at 23,000 rpm for 2 minutes. EVCO-SJ is stored at three temperature variations, namely 30 °C, 45 °C, and 55 °C, with storage time intervals of 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days. The observed quality parameter is the peroxide value as an early indicator of lipid oxidation. Data on changes in peroxide value are analyzed using the Arrhenius model in the ASLT method to predict shelf life. The results showed that increasing storage temperature accelerated the rate of lipid oxidation in EVCO-SJ, as indicated by an increase in the peroxide value during storage. Predicted shelf life of EVCO-SJ based on the ASLT method indicated that the shelf life at 30°C, 45°C, and 55°C was 146.34 days, 83.46 days, and 59.06 days, respectively. These results provide scientific information regarding the oxidative stability of EVCO-SJ and can serve as a basis for determining shelf life and developing VCO-based emulsion products with measurable quality and shelf life.

Abstract

The many avtur samples that are tested every month has an impact on avtur waste that accumulates in the PT. Pertamina Lubricant PU Jakarta laboratory. Avtur wastes are usually just thrown away without being processed again. This study focuses on the utilization of avtur test results waste by knowing the quality of avtur waste with flash point, distillation, freezing point, density and color test parameters. The aims of this research are to solve the problem of waste from avtur testing results by reusing avtur waste to become a product so as to reduce the occurrence of losses. The first step is to prepare a sample of waste from avtur test results and then perform tests on the flash point, distillation, freezing point, density and color test parameters. After that, avtur waste was formulated: avtur ASTM standard T.107 with variations in the formulation, namely 5% LA : A, 10% LA : A, 15% LA : A and 20% LA : A. After that, the mixing process was carried out for 15 minutes using a stirrer motor with a speed of 300 rpm (rotations per minute). Then flash point, distillation, freezing point, density and color tests were carried out to get results that match the specifications of the avtur. The results showed that the formulation of the avtur test results: avtur according to American Standard Testing and Material (ASTM) standard had met the avtur specifications. Where the best formulation was found in 10% avtur waste formulation with test value of color : 25, density : 802.4 Kg/m3, flash point : 42.5 oC, freezing point : -55.0 oC and distillation (IBP : 156.0 oC, 10 % : 172.0 oC, 50% : 194.0 oC , 90% : 225.0 oC, End Point : 257.0 oC. Based on the results of the formulation testing that has been carried out, the avtur test results formulated with ASTM standard for avtur have met the company's quality standards.

Abstract

Used cooking oil can disturb health if used continues, and the waste can damage of environment if discarded, therefore prevention is needed through processing (recycling) of used cooking oil to economic products, for example, hand soap. This research was the manufacture of hand soap using the waste of cooking oil, olive oil, and KOH as raw materials. The aim is to determine formulations of raw materials on good hand soap on organoleptic tests, pH, microbial inhibitory zones, humidity and irritation levels, and foam height. The formulations between used cooking oil and olive oil are F1 (125 g and 125 g), F2 (150 g and 100 g), F3 (175 g and 75 g), and F4 (200 g and 50 g). This study begins with the manufacture of hand soap using the experimental method, continued by testing the inhibiting zone of growth of Propionibacterium acne bacteria, moisture content, irritation level, foam height through descriptive tests with analytical observational, organoleptic, and pH. Results are all formulas of hand soap have strong effectiveness in inhibiting microbe growth, distinctive organoleptic, moisturizing, and anti-irritation. The foam height has met with SNI 06-4085-1996, however, the pH value has larger than the pH of SNI 06-4085-1966. The best hand soap preparation is Formula 1 (F1) because it has a pH value that is close to the pH value of SNI.
