Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country that has a variety of plants, one of which is the succulent plant (Polyscias scutellaria). Mangkukan plants contain compounds of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, steroids, polyphenols, fats. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of the Mangkukan leaf (Polyscias scutellaria) against the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The tests were carried out through the stages of collecting materials, preparing simplicia, making ethanolic extract of kukukan leaves and testing the inhibitory power of basil leaves against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli bacteria. The manufacture of ethanolic extract of the leaves of the Mangkokan was carried out by the maceration method using 96% ethanol. Antibacterial activity testing was carried out using the agar diffusion method using disc paper. The results of the study based on the results of phytochemical screening showed that the simplicia and ethanol extract of the Mangkokan leaf contained flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids/triterpenes. Meanwhile, in the antibacterial activity test, the ethanol extract of the Mangkokan Leaf had antibacterial or inhibition zones on these bacteria with different concentrations, such as concentrations of 60%, 80% and 100%. Positive control using chloramphenicol and for negative control using sterile distilled water. The ethanol extract of the Mangkukan leaf has antibacterial activity of Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli.

Abstract

Centong Cactus (Opuntia cochenilifera) is one of the plants used to treat health problems, but this is done based on hereditary experience. This plant contains flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. The purpose of this study was to see the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of Centong cactus (Opuntia cochenillifera) using alternative media of Kepok banana starch and Muller Hilton Agar Media. This study was conducted experimentally. Samples were extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol as solvent. Antibacterial activity was tested by disk diffusion method with paper backing technique. The parameters observed were zone of inhibition. Based on the result of the inhibition zone research, the best results were obtained on the banana starch media with a concentration of 40% 18,7mm and on Muller Hilton Agar media with a concentration of 40% 20,1mm. The antibacterial test result stated that the ethanolic extract of Centong cactus could provide an effective inhibition again Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Antibacterial activity using Mullerr Hilton Agar media in order to have a larger zone of inhibition than using kapok banana starch.

Abstract

Pathological vaginal discharge is a common reproductive health problem among women, especially in Indonesia, with a prevalence reaching 75%. Conventional treatment for vaginal discharge is often constrained by cost and limited access to healthcare services, making traditional remedies such as green betel leaf decoction and turmeric extract popular alternatives. This study aimed to examine the antifungal effectiveness of green betel leaf decoction and turmeric in significantly reducing pathological vaginal discharge among adolescent to adult women over the long term. The research method employed was a literature review with a systematic search of the Google Scholar database from January 2020 to July 2024 using the keyword “Traditional Medicine for Vaginal Discharge.” From 3,010 initial articles, after screening for duplication and relevance, five articles were selected for descriptive analysis. The results showed that green betel leaf decoction and turmeric extract had high effectiveness in reducing pathological vaginal discharge, as evidenced by a significant decrease in discharge scores (p<0.05) across various age groups of women. Bioactive compounds such as essential oils, flavonoids, and curcumin provide antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities that help restore vaginal microflora balance. In conclusion, green betel leaf decoction and turmeric were effective in significantly reducing pathological vaginal discharge among adolescent to adult women, in accordance with the long-term treatment objectives.
