Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health concern frequently observed in the elderly population. Aging is associated with physiological changes that impact various organ systems, including a progressive decline in renal function due to a reduced number of functioning nephrons, which in turn leads to a gradual decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The Community Service Program (PKM) conducted at Panti Werdha Hana aimed to raise awareness among the elderly regarding the importance of early detection of kidney function impairment through serum creatinine measurement and estimation of eGFR. This initiative applied the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, encompassing education on risk factors and laboratory testing. Among 76 participants, 19 individuals (25%) were identified with stage 5 CKD, 3 (3.95%) with stage 4, 6 (7.89%) with stage 3b, 17 (22.37%) with stage 3a, and 31 (40.79%) with stage 2 kidney function decline; additionally, 26 individuals (34.21%) had elevated creatinine levels. These findings underscore the critical importance of early detection to prevent CKD progression and associated complications, while also promoting improved quality of life in the elderly through timely intervention and continuous health educationKeywords: Chronic Kidney Disease, Early Detection, Elderly, Glomerular Filtration Rate, Serum Creatinine

Abstract

Triglyceride level examination is a crucial step in early detection of metabolic disorders. High triglyceride levels often occur without symptoms, but play a direct role in triggering dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and increased cardiovascular risk. The implementation of the activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach. The examination was carried out directly using the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tool to assess triglyceride levels from blood samples. A total of 62 participants took the examination. A total of 46.8% of participants had high triglyceride levels, while 53.2% were still within normal limits. The highest triglyceride value reached 446.0 mg/dL and the median was 133.5 mg/dL. The majority of participants were female. Triglyceride examination identified participants with impaired lipid profiles. Education about physical activity needs to be part of a preventive strategy to lower triglyceride levels and reduce the risk of metabolic complications. Movement-based interventions can increase awareness and encourage healthier behavioral changes.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that is common in the elderly and has a major impact on quality of life, especially through risk complications such as impaired vision, heart disease, kidney failure, and amputation. The elderly are often unaware of the early symptoms of diabetes because complaints are considered part of the aging process, such as fatigue or frequent urination. The Community Service Program (PKM) at Panti Werdha Hana aims to increase awareness of the elderly about the importance of early detection of diabetes through fasting blood sugar screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach which includes checking blood sugar levels with the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tool and educational counseling on risk factors and prevention of diabetes. The results showed that out of 76 participants, 8 people (10.53%) were identified as having diabetes, 9 people (11.84%) had prediabetes, and the rest had normal blood sugar levels. Early detection through screening has proven to be an important step in preventing diabetes progression and severe complications, as well as supporting the improvement of the quality of life of the elderly through timely interventions and ongoing education.

Abstract

Anemia is a medical condition characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) or hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the blood which results in impaired oxygen transport to body tissues. Mild anemia is more common and is asymptomatic and does not require treatment. Anemia can have a negative impact on endurance, productivity, and is high risk during pregnancy because it can affect fetal growth and development, increase the risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications, and even maternal and child death. The Community Service (PKM) activity carried out at the Asisi Church, Tebet District aims to increase public awareness of the importance of early detection of anemia through hemoglobin and hematocrit screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach which includes capillary blood tests with Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tools and education about symptoms, risk factors, and prevention of anemia. Of the 68 participants involved, 40 people (58.82%) were identified as having anemia, while 28 people (41.18%) had normal hemoglobin levels. These results emphasize the importance of early anemia screening to prevent long-term complications and build public awareness of the importance of maintaining optimal hemoglobin levels to support ongoing health and quality of life. Abstract

Abstract

Nutritional status has a significant impact on the growth and development of children. In Indonesia, the prevalence of nutritional status is as follows: 4% (very thin), 7.2% (thin), 10.8% (overweight), and 8% (obese), as determined by body mass index/age. This can be affected by a variety of variables, including socioeconomic status, personal hygiene, and lifestyle. In the odd semester of 2024, Panyaweuyan Elementary School is populated by 285 students in total. The objective of this service endeavor is to conduct early nutritional status screenings for pupils and girls attending Panyaweuyan Elementary School. By assessing the nutritional status of children through anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, and body mass index, this service activity is developed utilizing the PDCA method. The findings from the assessments indicate that while the majority of pupils enrolled at Panyaweuyan Elementary School possess a healthy nutritional status, a subset remains obese and has a compromised nutritional status. Early detection is critical for preventing and treating nutritional issues in children so that they may develop to their full potential.
