Abstract

This study investigates the usage of online academic writing tools and reference management software among postgraduate students in North-west Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed, with a sample of 420 doctoral students from four regional universities. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal that Google Docs and Authorea are the most widely used online tools for academic writing and collaboration, followed by Overleaf and OneNote. Surprisingly, Microsoft Office 365 showed lower adoption rates. Regarding reference management software, Mendeley and Zotero emerged as the clear favourites, with EndNote and Citavi also showing significant usage. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences in the use of online tools for academic writing and collaboration and the types of reference management software used among postgraduate students. These differences could be attributed to individual preferences, institutional recommendations, or varying levels of technological literacy. The study contributes to understanding digital literacy and technology adoption in higher education in developing countries. It provides valuable insights for educational institutions, policymakers, and software developers to support postgraduate students' academic endeavours. Recommendations include implementing digital literacy programs and developing standardized sets of recommended tools to enhance research productivity and collaboration among doctoral students in North-west Nigeria.

Abstract

Organizations operate in increasingly complex environments, requiring adaptive strategies to balance internal rationality with external demands. This study uses Thompson’s (1967) contingency theory to examine how organizations structure themselves in response to environmental uncertainty and technological complexity, integrating insights from resource dependence and institutional theory. Qualitative case studies and quantitative survey data were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach. Technology, healthcare, and manufacturing case studies included semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and observations. A survey of organizational leaders and employees provided quantitative data on structural flexibility, uncertainty, technological complexity, and performance outcomes. Statistical analyses were applied, including regression and structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings reveal that organizations facing high uncertainty adopt flexible structures, while those with complex technologies decentralize decision-making to foster innovation. Institutional pressures also drive organizations to engage in symbolic actions to demonstrate compliance. Integrating qualitative and quantitative data highlighted how technical demands and institutional norms shape adaptation strategies. This study underscores the importance of aligning organizational structure with environmental and technological needs, as contingency theory suggests. However, institutional factors also shape adaptation, making it a multifaceted process. The research contributes to administrative theory by integrating multiple perspectives and offers practical insights for leaders navigating complex environments.

Abstract

This research analyses the relationship between work motivation and employee job satisfaction at Darul Muklasin High School. In Islamic educational institutions, work motivation, influenced by internal factors such as religious values, a sense of responsibility, and the awards received, plays a vital role in shaping job satisfaction. Job satisfaction, in turn, also strengthens employee motivation to work better. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and participatory observation of Darul Muklasin High School employees. The research results show a mutually reinforcing positive relationship between work motivation and job satisfaction. Factors such as appropriate compensation, rewards for performance, a conducive work environment, and supportive leadership greatly influence these two aspects. Apart from that, work stress and high workload are obstacles that can reduce motivation and job satisfaction. Based on these findings, it is recommended that Darul Muklasin High School management increase compensation, create a more harmonious work environment, provide career development opportunities, and reduce work stress to increase employee motivation and job satisfaction. Implementing these recommendations is expected to improve employee performance and the overall quality of education at Darul Muklasin High School.
