Abstract

Aedes aegypti is the main transmitter of dengue hemorrhagic fever which is an important health problem in Indonesia and the world. The main vector of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is the Aedes aegypti mosquito which originated from Africa and discovered in Indonesia in 1968 in Surabaya. DHF continues to spread to all 472 districts or cities in 34 provinces in Indonesia. Data on dengue cases recorded until the 49th week of 2020 were 95,893 cases and 661 cases of death. Biological control using natural ingredients which is Asteraceae family plants that have larvicidal activity is one of the methode to prevent transmission and reproduction of the main vector. The object of this study is to know the potential of Asteraceae family plants as larvicides against Aedes aegypti. The method of this study is systematic review. The data sources used are secondary data obtained from Google Scholar. The keywords are Asteraceae, Aedes aegypti and larvicide. There are 17 literatures which fulfill the criteria. Synthesis of data is using SPIDER. The result of this study is, from 17 international and national journals reviewed, there were 9 (52,95%) journals shows that Asteraceae family plants have low potential to become Aedes aegypti larvicides and 8 (47,05%) journals shows that Asteraceae family plant have the potential to become Aedes aegypti larvicides, this is based on the LC50 value >1000ppm which indicates that the larvicidal activity is low. Asteraceae family plants have low potential to become Aedes aegypti larvicides.

Abstract

An incision is an open wound resulting in skin injury and underlying tissues. The wound-healing process involves a proliferative phase that produces collagen. Sungkai leaves (Peronema canescens Jack.) can be used as an alternative therapy for wound healing because it contains flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that stimulate fibroblasts to synthesize collagen. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of sungkai leaf extract gel in healing incision wounds in vivo based on collagen density scoring. Twenty-five Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were randomly divided into five groups, the negative control group (K1) was given a gelling agent CMC 1%, the positive control group (K2) was given bioplacenton gel 1%, the treatment group (K3, K4, K5) was given a gel sungkai leaf extract concentration of 5, 10, and 15. The treatment is given topically at the incision site of the incision site of 0.1 g once a day for 14 days. The rats were euthanized on the fifteenth day, and the incision area was excised for histopathological preparation. The data obtained were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis with SPSS 26. The test results showed p=0.010, meaning there is a significant difference (p<0.05) between the entire treatment. Based on these results, the K4 group (Sungkai leaf extract gel concentration of 10%) showed the highest collagen density scoring results compared to other treatments. This study concludes that sungkai leaves effectively heal incision wounds in Wistar rats based on collagen density scoring parameter.

Abstract

Abstract

Wounds are a health problem that is a frequent occurrence in Indonesia. Providing herbal therapy can be an alternative for healing wounds. Red betel (Piper crocatum) and green betel (Piper betle L.) have various secondary metabolite compounds that play a role in healing wounds of skin incisions. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a combination patch preparation of red betel leaf extract and green betel leaf in healing cuts on the skin. The experimental animals were divided into five treatment groups: positive control (povidone-iodine plaster), negative control patch without extract, and groups with extract at several concentrations (7.5%, 15%, and 30%). Several parameters were measured by measuring wound length and observing wound healing time and local infection based on the Nagaoka criteria. The combination patch preparation of red betel leaf extract and green betel leaf extract did not statistically show a significant difference in effectiveness in wound healing as assessed based on the Nagaoka criteria with several wound assessment parameters. However, macroscopic observation in the K2 group (concentration 15%) showed better wound healing compared to the povidone-iodine plaster group.

Abstract

Haemonchosis is an infection caused by the Haemonchus contortus worm, a blood-sucking gastrointestinal parasite that can also infect humans. Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq leaves have been shown to have anthelmintic activity due to the presence of saponins, flavonoids, and tannins. This study aimed to determine the anthelmintic activity of ethanol extract of Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq leaves against H. contortus. The infective H. contortus larvae were divided into six treatment groups: a 0.5% ethanol extract concentration group, a 1% ethanol extract concentration group, a 2% ethanol extract concentration group, a 4% ethanol extract concentration group, a positive control group (+), and a negative control group (-), each with four replicates. The study was conducted in six hours, with observations made at the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th hours. The results showed that the death of the larvae increased with higher ethanol extract concentrations and longer exposure to the ethanol extract of Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq leaves. The time of death for infective H. contortus larvae given the ethanol extract of Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq leaves was at the 4th hour, and the effective dose of the ethanol extract as an anthelmintic was at the concentration of 0.5%.
