Abstract

The transformation of Indonesian shophouses reveals a decisive rupture between the spatial intelligence of their colonial predecessors and the sealed, utilitarian forms that now dominate urban areas. Through a visual analysis comparing colonial photographic archives from Batavia, Bandung, and Makassar (1900–1930) with modern shophouse imagery (2020–2024), this study reveals that the defining features of colonial shophouses, such as arcades, transitional emperan, inner courts, cross-ventilation pathways, and layered spatial sequences, have been systematically erased. This disappearance reflects an aesthetic shift and the loss of an ecological and social logic that enabled these buildings to negotiate the tropical climate, urban density and street-level activity. The findings show that modern shophouse cannot be seen as a natural progression of the colonial shophouse, but rather as a typological departure that has abandoned the organic, climatic and socio-urban relationships that have historically shaped Indonesia's commercial streetscapes.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Museum of Makassar, in its capacity as a representative space of urban historyand culture, plays a pivotal role is fostering collective public awareness of city’sheritage. However, the undirected circulation structure of the exhibition spaceengenders a fragmented and unsystematic visitor experience. The objective of thisresearch is to examine visitor circulation patterns in Museum of Makassar andformulate a spatial movement model that is able to integrate curatorial narrativesmore effectively. This research utilizes a qualitative approach, employing directobservation, spatial mapping and spatial configuration analysis to evaluate therelationship between the movement of visitors and their comprehension ofexhibition content. The findings of this research are anticipated to contribute ofthe development of spatial planning strategies for museums that are morecommunicative, directed and inclusive, thereby supporting museum in their roleas inclusive and immersive public learning spaces.

Abstract

This study examines the loss of Indische architecture in the port area of Makassar, tracing historical visual evidence and key records relating to Passerstraat, now known as Jalan Nusantara, and Wilhelminastraat. The analysis focuses on three documented buildings: De Javasche Bank, the Nederlandsche Handel Maatschappij and Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) building. The method combines a historical reading with an analysis of the architectural elements of massing, façade composition, and openings, as observable in historical photographs. The findings suggest that the primary pattern of loss in the studied cases is the physical disappearance of buildings, which disrupts typological data and weakens the reconstruction of the Indische period in the port environment. By treating lost buildings as legitimate architectural evidence, this study provides a more accurate estimation of the extent of the loss, indicating that the Indische presence in Makassar historically extended beyond what is visually discernible today.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the psychological and academic antecedents of employability skills among engineering students by investigating the roles of self-efficacy and academic commitment, with career planning as a mediating variable. Methods – A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted with 323 undergraduate engineering students from a public university in Indonesia. Validated instruments were used to measure self-efficacy, academic commitment (level of commitment, investment, and meaningfulness), career planning, and employability skills (analytical skills, general management, and leadership). Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings – The findings showed that self-efficacy and academic investment were the most consistent predictors of career planning. In turn, career planning was positively associated with all dimensions of employability skills, indicating its central role as a mediating mechanism between psychological and academic factors and employability outcomes. By contrast, level of commitment and meaningfulness showed weaker and less consistent relationships with employability dimensions.Research implications – The findings highlight the importance of strengthening self-efficacy, promoting active academic investment, and integrating structured career planning into higher education to support students’ employability development. Originality – This study extends prior employability research by testing a mediated model of self-efficacy, academic commitment, and career planning in an Indonesian engineering student context. However, the findings should be interpreted cautiously due to the cross-sectional design and single-university sample.
