Abstract

Critical thinking has important role in the EFL class. It can be developed through questioning. However, English teachers are rare to address the critical thinking questions to their students. Therefore, this study aims to investigate to what extent teachers use questions to promote students' critical thinking. This study employed a qualitative approach with open-ended questionnaires and interview to collect data. Seventy-eight of English junior high school teachers in Indonesia were involved in this study. The results of this research revealed that majority teachers employed critical thinking questions. They posed the questions for clarification, assumption, reasons and evidence, viewpoints or perspective, the implication, consequence or alternative, prediction, agreement and disagreement, and summary and conclusion to promote students’ critical thinking skill.

Abstract

The emergence of mobile learning applications facilitates the pedagogical approach to developing students’ critical thinking. However, there is a scarcity of investigation on mobile learning applications’ impact on developing critical thinking as the learning outcome. Thus, this study reports the effect of a mobile learning application, ‘English with Noni’, designed to infuse critical thinking instruction in EFL classes on students’ critical thinking level by employing a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the critical thinking level of 65 students of a junior high school in Jakarta, Indonesia, by administering a post-test assessed using a SOLO rubric. Semi-structured interviews to explore students’ responses from using the ‘English with Noni’ application and class observation contributed to the qualitative findings. The quantitative result showed that the critical thinking level of the experimental group using this application improved significantly more than the controlled group did. The qualitative result suggested that the experimental group had positive responses to using it. They confirmed that it was interesting. They also admitted that it contributed to developing their critical thinking (i.e., predicting, providing reasons, expressing viewpoints, finding alternatives, and making conclusions), language skills (i.e., listening, reading, and writing), and sub-skill (vocabulary). The findings imply that critical thinking activities and learning affordances provided in the ‘English with Noni’ application is a potential tool to enhance students’ critical thinking infused in the EFL class, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, by emphasizing self-regulated learning.

Abstract

Learning does not only involve the transfer of knowledge but also requires the active interaction and collaboration among students. One effective way to foster interaction and collaboration is by incorporating icebreaking activities in the classroom. An interview conducted revealed that teachers expressed a need for further development of icebreaking activities. As a response, a community service activity was initiated, involving the provision of training of teachers on the development of icebreaking activities in teaching and learning process. The training aimed to enhance teachers’ knowledge and professional skills to establish a fun learning atmosphere and motivate the students. The development of teachers’ knowledge and skill development can inspire them to design and implement effective icebreaking activities. This community service employed various methods, including lecturing, presentations, discussions, and simulations engaging 229 Junior high school, Jakarta. The finding suggested that the community service significantly contributed to improving the teachers’ knowledge and skills in developing icebreaking activities, fostering their students’ learning readiness, creating a conducive and enjoyable learning environment, and promoting social interaction among students and teachers. Furthermore, it has the potential to enhance students’ engagement in learning process, leading to improved academic performance.  Key words: icebreaking activities, social interaction, and collaboration

Abstract

Numerous investigations have delved into the cultural content and intercultural communicative competence. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of comprehensive research that directly scrutinizes these aspects within the context of Indonesian EFL textbooks, specially following new curriculum in Indonesia, the Merdeka curriculum. Therefore, this study aims to explore the representation of the culture content and intercultural communicative competence in “English for Change” and “Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut” textbooks designed for the 11th-grade students following the Merdeka Curriculum by employing content analysis. The findings suggested that both textbooks focused more on the source culture than on international and target culture. They also did not convey sufficient intercultural communicative competence. These findings imply that the government, teacher, and material developers must carefully determine and select the learning material to present a balance culture content and intercultural communicative competence in order to build students’ culture sensitivity and global awareness.
