Abstract

Education is one of the pillars of the progress of a nation. Education is still a serious concern in each region in order to increase. The quality of education at the Integrated Early Childhood Post (PPT) Kuncup Melati Surabaya is quite good but still needs to be improved. One of them is in technology-based English learning. Learning English at PPT Kuncup Melati Surabaya will be much more interesting if it is packaged with a blend of technology and presented to Early Childhood Education students in the form of visual learning. In addition, online learning is currently being promoted again along with the increasing number of Covid-19 victims during this pandemic. Mastery of technology-based English learning at PPT Kuncup Melati Surabaya is still minimal. This is evident from the learning that is still carried out face-to-face, even though it is carried out in alternating schedules. Even though there are clear rules from the government that suggest that learning is done online. As a solution, assistance is needed in technology-based online English learning with a variety of methods and is carried out in a sustainable manner so that learning can be done online but still interesting. By applying the flipbook application in learning English, it is hoped that it will stimulate Early Childhood Education students in learning technology-based English. Flipbook is a powerful software application designed to convert PDF files to page-turning digital publications. With the flipbook application, a digital bookshelf can be created from several E-Modules that have been produced so that teachers and students can choose which E-Module to read by simply pressing the click button to select it. This Community Service (PKM) activity plan is focused on implementing an interactive English E-Module with a flipbook application for Early Childhood Education students at PPT Kuncup Melati Surabaya. The target of this PKM activity is the students in the school. The expected output is to apply a flipbook application to students at the school and to create a digital literacy corner and e-learning regeneration which is expected to be able to increase the knowledge, skills, interests and motivation of Early Childhood Education students in learning English. With the digital literacy corner, it is hoped that it can increase student interest in literacy.

Abstract

It is very challenging for a teacher to teach students with special needs, for example those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), so that they can learn and get a proper education. ASD students have poor communication and interaction skills. This can be a problem for teachers in the teaching process because their mastery in teaching English strategies to ASD students is low. Teaching ASD students is different from teaching other students in general because English teachers must have special guidelines for teaching strategies. The solution to help is to equip them with the right teaching strategies. Teaching strategies are the structures, systems, methods, techniques, procedures, and processes that teachers use during teaching as a way to help students learn better. There are five teaching strategies for ASD students by applying: 1. Total Physical Response (TPR), 2. Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) approach, 3. Image media with play techniques, 4. RPP according to the needs of ASD students, 5. Video Recording Method Interactive. The socialization of community service was oriented to focus on strategies for teaching English for ASD students to English teachers at the Musyawarah Kerja Kepala Sekolah (MKKS) Private Junior High School association in the North Surabaya region. The target participants for this activity were 40 junior high school teachers from various schools who are members of the association, but in fact there were 97 people who attended this seminar. This study aimed to determine teachers' perceptions in teaching English language strategies to students with ASD. This study used qualitative research methods by describing the results of teachers' perceptions obtained from interview with them. The findings of this study indicated that teachers' perceptions were positive regarding this matter. The data collection method was carried out by interviewing five English teachers randomly. Data analysis was carried out by describing the data from the interviews. The results indicated that the English teacher's perception of this community service activity was positive to increase English teachers' mastery in teaching English language strategies to ASD students so that they can teach with appropriate teaching strategies.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to prove whether students’ writing creativity can be increased by implementing the plot of the Black Adam movie based on Propp’s morphology structure as scaffolding in making a narrative story. This study was conducted because students feel the necessity and lack self-motivation to create their own story. Methods – This research was quantitative with an experimental design. The data collected from the pre-test and post-test results were then analyzed by quantitative analysis through SPSS 25. The sample for this research was 25 students of English education in the first Semester, at the University of Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya. There were two kinds of instruments for this data, such as tests (pre-test and post-test) and questionnaires. The questionnaire was collected by diagram through a Google form.Findings – The result of this study showed students’ writing creativity increased by using the Vladimir Propp structure in making fairy tale stories, with p = 0.00 > 0.05. This suggests that the implementation of the Black Adam movie’s plot in creative writing based on Propp’s Morphology of Fairytale improved students’ writing ability in making narratives and helped students learn more easily. Research Implications – This research is limited by a small sample, a short duration, and a single-group design. Generalizing findings is challenging, and future research should consider larger and more diverse samples, extended study durations, and diverse pedagogical approaches for a comprehensive understanding of effective creative writing instruction.

Abstract

Speaking remains one of the most challenging skills for Indonesian students to master, largely due to limited opportunities for oral practice in traditional, teacher-centered classrooms. To address this issue, this study investigates the use of the Flipped Classroom model in improving students’ English-speaking competence at MA Darul Ulum Waru, Sidoarjo. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research was conducted over one month (April–May 2025) and involved one English teacher and fifteen eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, structured interviews, and documentation to explore both instructional implementation and participants’ experiences. The findings reveal that the Flipped Classroom encouraged students to prepare independently before class, resulting in more interactive in-class speaking activities. Students demonstrated greater confidence, motivation, and fluency, while the teacher reported higher engagement and participation levels. Despite challenges related to digital access and self-regulation, the approach proved effective in promoting speaking competence. This study suggests that English teachers integrate digital pre-class learning into speaking instruction and that policymakers support technology-based pedagogical innovation to foster more communicative, student-centered classrooms in Indonesian schools.

Abstract

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is widely recognized as an instructional approach that encourages active learning, critical thinking, collaboration, and meaningful student participation. Although many previous studies have examined the effectiveness of PBL in improving academic achievement, relatively fewer studies have specifically discussed how PBL influences students’ engagement throughout the learning process. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the development of research on PBL related to students’ engagement during the 2016–2025 period. This study applies a narrative review method by examining open-access journal articles that are relevant to the topic. The analysis focuses on research trends, methodological approaches, engagement dimensions, and key findings reported in previous studies. The findings show that research on PBL has increased over the last decade and has gradually shifted toward a broader discussion of students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. The most frequently used research methods include quasi-experimental design, classroom action research, and mixed-method approaches. Overall, PBL has been proven effective in increasing students’ active participation, learning motivation, collaboration, problem-solving ability, and conceptual understanding. However, several challenges remain in its implementation, including limited learning time, unequal student participation, teachers’ readiness, and the need for appropriate problem design. This review indicates that PBL is not only relevant for improving learning outcomes but also plays an important role in strengthening students’ engagement in the learning process. Future studies are recommended to explore PBL implementation across different educational levels, subjects, and learning contexts, especially in technology-supported, interdisciplinary, and inclusive classroom environments that require sustained participation and reflective learning over time.

Abstract

The integration of gamification into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction has gained significant attention due to its potential to increase student engagement and motivation. Among various digital learning platforms, Kahoot has emerged as one of the most widely used tools for creating interactive and game-based learning experiences. While numerous studies have investigated the effectiveness of Kahoot in improving learning outcomes, limited attention has been paid to students’ perceptions of its use in speaking activities. This narrative literature review aims to explore how students perceive Kahoot-based speaking activities and to identify the pedagogical benefits and challenges associated with its implementation in EFL classrooms. The review synthesizes findings from recent studies published between 2016 and 2025 focusing on Kahoot, speaking instruction, gamification, and learner engagement. The findings indicate that students generally perceive Kahoot positively due to its ability to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere, reduce speaking anxiety, increase motivation, and encourage classroom participation. Furthermore, Kahoot facilitates collaborative interaction and promotes willingness to communicate in English. However, several challenges have also been identified, including time pressure, technological limitations, and the possibility of prioritizing competition over meaningful communication. The review concludes that Kahoot has considerable potential to support speaking activities when integrated with communicative teaching strategies. Future research is encouraged to investigate long-term impacts of Kahoot on speaking development and communicative competence in diverse EFL contexts.

Abstract

The growing incorporation of gamification and interactive digital platforms has become a pivotal development in English vocabulary instruction across EFL/ESL settings. Among these emerging tools, Wordwall has attracted considerable scholarly attention due to its capacity to foster engaging, technology-mediated learning experiences. This study seeks to critically synthesize recent empirical and review-based literature on the effectiveness of Wordwall and gamified instructional strategies in vocabulary acquisition. Employing a systematic literature review methodology, the analysis draws on studies presented in the provided literature tables, with particular emphasis on cognitive learning outcomes, affective dimensions, and prevailing methodological approaches. The findings consistently demonstrate that Wordwall-supported gamification enhances vocabulary mastery, improves retention and recall, and contributes to higher levels of academic achievement across diverse educational contexts. Moreover, affective factors such as learner motivation, enjoyment, active engagement, classroom participation, and positive attitudes toward learning emerge as key determinants of instructional success. The review also underscores the increasing relevance of educational technology and game-based learning in advancing interactive, student-centered vocabulary instruction. Overall, the evidence suggests that Wordwall holds substantial pedagogical value for contemporary EFL/ESL vocabulary learning environments.
