Abstract

This research aims to describe mathematics teachers' perceptions of geometry concepts and their learning with technological transformation in West Kalimantan junior high schools. The challenge of technology integration in teaching geometry is often faced by teachers, especially in contexts requiring visualization and deep spatial understanding. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data collection was done by distributing tests to 127 teachers, while data analysis was done qualitatively. The results showed teachers’ perceptions of geometry and technological transformation at the junior high school level in West Kalimantan. There is a tendency that geometry is taught with the teachers’ existing skills, without involving IT, due to the perception that IT requires more time and effort. Additionally, learning tends to focus on student understanding without ensuring the geometry material aligns with contextual needs, resulting in minimal application of IT in learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: This study seeks to explain how the integration of Lesson Study and Contextual Teaching and Learning supports pre-service elementary teachers in developing deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics and cultivating reflective teaching habits. The focus lies in examining how the combined approach encourages meaningful engagement with geometric and measurement concepts through real-life contexts. Method: A descriptive qualitative design was applied by following the Lesson Study cycle of collaborative planning, classroom implementation, and reflective discussion. Data were gathered through observations, semi-structured interviews, field notes, and assessments conducted during the Geometry and Measurement course. The analysis used the Miles and Huberman framework to identify, organize, and interpret emerging patterns in students’ learning behavior. Findings: The integration of Lesson Study and contextual strategies led to more active participation, stronger collaboration, and clearer conceptual reasoning among pre-service teachers. Contextual problems helped students connect abstract geometric ideas with real situations, while the reflective phase allowed misconceptions to become learning opportunities. Both lecturers and students demonstrated noticeable professional growth as they engaged in continuous cycles of inquiry and refinement. Significance: The study highlights that combining structured reflection with contextual learning can enhance mathematical engagement and strengthen conceptual understanding among future teachers. This integrated model offers a promising pathway for preparing reflective, skillful, and context-aware mathematics educators at the higher-education level.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and implement a multidimensional vector modeling approach to comprehensively analyze the methodological competence of prospective mathematics teachers. The analysis focuses on five core dimensions: cognitive, social, operational, research, and methodological. The participants comprised 25 master’s students in Mathematics Education with a minimum of one year of teaching experience. Data were collected through self-perception questionnaires and classroom performance observation sheets, and subsequently represented as five-component vectors. The calculated vector modulus was 3.66, indicating that the overall methodological competence is at a developing level. Findings reveal that the cognitive and operational dimensions dominate competence achievements, whereas the social and research dimensions require further reinforcement. Vector modeling allows for simultaneous representation of inter-component competencies, providing a precise depiction of ability distribution and inter-dimensional variation. These results offer an empirical basis for teacher education institutions to design adaptive professional development programs and extend the literature on multidimensional teacher competence assessment in mathematics education. Thus, this approach not only enhances conceptual understanding of the structure of methodological competence but also provides an objective and strategic diagnostic tool for targeted teacher training interventions.
