Abstract

Teaching English in classes where students have different learning styles poses special challenges for teachers. Some students learn better through visual aids, others through listening, speaking, or moving actively. Therefore, understanding and applying appropriate teaching strategies to accommodate these diverse learning styles is essential. This study aims to explore the strategies used by an EFL teacher to address students’ varied learning preferences in an English classroom at SMAN 2 Pangkep. This research employed a qualitative descriptive study design. The subject of this study was one English teacher who teaches tenth-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observation and interviews, the strategies used by the teacher include using pictures and illustrations, referring to textbooks with visuals, occasional use of the internet, and encouraging group discussions. The findings reveal that these strategies helped maintain student engagement and supported different learning styles, even though the teacher did not formally assess them. This study highlights the importance of teacher awareness and adaptability in meeting students’ varied ways of learning in the EFL context.

Abstract

This study analyzes the character of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer through Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis approach. Using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory, this study explores the dynamics between the id, ego, and superego in J. Robert Oppenheimer, as well as the conflicts experienced by J. Robert Oppenheimer. The researcher analyzed these theories with a descriptive qualitative approach using the methods of narrative text study and film discourse analysis. The results show that J. Robert Oppenheimer's internal and external conflicts do not only reflect personal struggles, but also include broader themes of scientific ethics and the impact of technology on humanity. The research also identifies that J. Robert Oppenheimer's personality dynamics are complex and reflect the tension between personal ambition, moral responsibility, and social pressure. The interaction between the id, ego, and superego created deep conflict both internally and externally, influencing his decisions, behaviour, and mental health.

Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the main components in English language learning that requires students’ courage and self-confidence. However, many senior high school students still face psychological barriers in expressing themselves orally. This community service program aimed to enhance students’ confidence in speaking through storytelling activities within the context of English language learning. The program was conducted at SMAN 8 Makassar and involved 23 students who were guided and mentored by a team from the Department of English, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar, along with students participating in the Asistensi Mengajar Mandiri (AjarMi) program. The implementation method consisted of three stages: preparation, the storytelling workshop, and evaluation through observation and student reflection. The results of the program indicated a significant improvement in students’ self-confidence, speaking fluency, and expressive ability. This activity also demonstrated effective collaboration among the university, student teachers, and the school in promoting communicative and humanistic language learning.

Abstract

This study explored the violations from Grice’s cooperative maxims within English language classroom interactions at an English Learning Centre. The research aimed to identify which maxim is most frequently violated and to explain the pragmatic functions of these violations. Applying a qualitative research approach, the researcher examined two audio-recorded classroom sessions: recordings were transcribed and analyzed using interactive analysis (Miles, Huberman, & Saldana). Data underwent reduction, classified under the four Gricean maxims (specifically Quantity, Quality, Relation, Manner), and demonstrated through selected extracts. Finding indicated that breaches of Relation Maxim occurred most often (50%), with Manner (21.42%), Quality (19.04%), and Quantity (9.52%) following in order. Data excerpts indicated that many breaches serve pragmatic purposes to create humor and elicit laughter, maintain rapport, control speaker exchange, and allow self-correction instead of signaling communicative breakdown. The study contended that within informal classroom interaction, dynamic interaction frequently emphasized social interaction instead of rigid information transfer, and that sensitivity of maxim flouting is essential to pragmatic competence. The limitations include a small dataset and lack of reported inter-rater validation. The study closed with a recommendation of explicit pragmatic instruction and future studies utilizing larger samples and verification measures to enhance teaching approaches aimed at fostering pragmatic ability among EFL learners.

Abstract

This study examines the illocutionary speech acts employed in the Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education's address at the UNESCO General Conference in November 2025, applying Searle's taxonomy of speech acts as the analytical framework. The analysis of 42 speech acts reveals that assertive utterances dominate the discourse, accounting for 47.62%, followed by commissives at 23.81%, expressives at 14.29%, directives at 11.90%, and declaratives at 2.38%. The findings demonstrate how diplomatic discourse strategically employs various speech acts to convey national positions, establish commitments, and maintain international relationships. This research contributes to understanding the pragmatic dimensions of diplomatic communication and the linguistic strategies employed by representatives of developing nations in multilateral forums.

Abstract

Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist offers a powerful critique of institutional child abuse through its depiction of Victorian workhouses, yet how contemporary readers interpret this representation remains underexplored. This study investigates how six Indonesian readers with diverse backgrounds decode Dickens' social critique, applying Stuart Hall's reception theory to analyze their interpretive positions. Through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, we found that participants occupied three distinct positions: two demonstrated dominant-hegemonic readings, fully accepting Dickens' humanitarian critique; two adopted negotiated positions, translating Victorian concerns into contemporary child welfare frameworks; and two exhibited oppositional readings, questioning the text's representational authority while advancing alternative interpretations. These findings reveal that interpretive positions correlate with readers' prior knowledge, professional socialization, and cultural contexts rather than emerging randomly. The study demonstrates that classic literature functions not as a vessel for fixed meanings but as contested terrain where historical representations provoke varied contemporary responses. Our analysis contributes to reception studies by empirically demonstrating how readers' social positions shape their engagement with ethically charged literary content, with implications for understanding how canonical texts continue to inform debates about institutional responsibility and child protection.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and communicative functions of illocutionary acts employed in President Prabowo Subianto’s address delivered at the 2025 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) and to examine their implications for national education management. Using a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Searle’s Speech Act Theory, the data were obtained from the official transcript of the presidential address and analyzed through systematic classification and interpretative analysis. The findings reveal that representative and directive illocutionary acts dominate the speech, indicating the President’s efforts to assert national conditions, legitimize strategic policy directions, and encourage collective participation, including in the education sector. Commissive acts reflect governmental responsibility and long-term commitment to educational reform and human resource development, while expressive acts function to reinforce moral values, ideological orientation, and emotional engagement with stakeholders. These results suggest that illocutionary acts serve as strategic tools in political communication and leadership discourse. The study implies that understanding speech acts in presidential discourse is essential for education managers and policymakers, as such discourse shapes policy orientation, institutional governance, and the implementation of national education management strategies

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and pragmatic functions of speech acts performed by the character Anxiety in Pixar’s animated film Inside Out 2 and to examine their implications for educational management, particularly in the context of social-emotional learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Speech Act Theory, the data were obtained from Anxiety’s utterances in the film and analyzed through classification and interpretative techniques. The utterances were categorized based on Searle’s taxonomy of illocutionary acts. The findings reveal that directive and expressive speech acts dominate Anxiety’s language, reflecting its role as a controlling and protective emotion that influences decision-making and emotional regulation during adolescence. Directive acts function to manage behavior and anticipate risk, while expressive acts convey emotional tension, concern, and fear. These results indicate that speech acts in animated films serve as linguistic representations of psychological states. The study implies that understanding emotional speech acts can support educational management practices, particularly in classroom management and social-emotional learning programs, by providing insights into how language shapes emotional regulation, student behavior, and supportive learning environments
