The participants in this study were 34 undergraduate students enrolled in an English prose course at a state university located in Makassar city, Indonesia. Data were collected through three primary instruments: intellectual diaries, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis with six steps implementation stages. The findings revealed four key themes in dealing with students’ intellectual diary: enhanced critical thinking, improved reading comprehension and analytical abilities, increased self-reflection and metacognitive awareness, and greater engagement with course material. These findings suggest that intellectual diaries can be a valuable tool for promoting literacy development in higher education. The study's findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on literacy education by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of intellectual diaries in an English prose course context.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the representation of tradition and violence in Shirley Jackson’s short story, The Lottery, by utilizing Stuart Hall’s reception theory to analyze participants’ interpretations. It aims to understand how the readers of the story interpret these themes based on their personal experiences and cultural contexts. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five participants representing different background of ethnic groups, religions, and cultural tradition to reveal diverse perspectives on the normalization of violence under the guise of tradition. The data analysis was connected to Hall’s reception theory with three categories: dominant hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional position. The findings indicate that one participant aligns with the dominant-hegemonic position, accepting traditional narratives without significant critique, while two participant adopts a negotiated position, recognizing the complexities of tradition yet grappling with its implications, and the other two participants are identified with oppositional position, indicating a critical stance towards traditional values and a rejection of their potential for harm. The result of this study provides more comprehensive perspectives toward the existence of violence in certain tradition and give a positive contribution to the analysis of cultural background of literary works. Keywords: Tradition, Violence, Recep[tion Theory, Social Norms, Ethics

Abstract

This study aims to explore the readers’ reception on The Necklace short story based on Hall’s reception theory. Employing descriptive-qualitative research design, the study focuses on Hall’s three main reading positions: the dominant-hegemonic, in which the reader decodes the message as intended by the author; the negotiated, where the reader partly accepts and partly resists the message; and the oppositional, where the reader rejects the encoded message entirely. Data were collected through two main instruments: students’ intellectual diaries (reflective journals) and classroom discussions. Data analysis follows Braun & Clarke’s thematic analysis. The findings of this study provide a nuanced understanding of how university students interpret Maupassant’s The Necklace in relation to materialism and contemporary consumer culture, viewed through the lens of Hall’s reception theory. The students’ responses, categorized into dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional readings, reveal the multiplicity of interpretive positions shaped by ideological alignment, personal experience, and sociocultural context. This study shows that The Necklace story remains a powerful and relevant story, offering rich opportunities for critical engagement and reflection in the classroom. It becomes evident that literary texts are not static but dynamic sites where meaning is contested and reinterpreted across time and space. This study has shown that literature remains an essential tool for fostering critical thinking and for engaging students with the social, cultural, and ideological issues of their time.
