Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome is a condition where a number of symptoms occur regularly and are related to the menstrual cycle, symptoms usually appear 7-10 days before menstruation begins. The aim of this study was to find out the relationship between physical activity and the incidence of premenstrual syndrome in young women at SMA Assanadiyah Palembang in 2021. The research used the analytical survey method with a cross sectional study approach. The research population was all young women totaling 63 respondents. The results of the univariate analysis of young women who did less light activities, namely 31 (49.2%), young women who did not do more light activities, namely 32 (50.8%). There were fewer girls who did moderate activities, namely 17 (27.0%), while there were more girls who did not do moderate activities, namely 46 (73.0%). Young women who did less strenuous activities, namely 15 (23.8%), while young women who did not do more strenuous activities, namely 48 (76.2%). Abstract

Background Probiotic banana milk is a product containing potassium from Ambon Banana developed to address gastrointestinal motility issues in surgical patients. However, two important parameters to be considered for surgical patients are viscosity and energy density. Objectives: To analyze the viscosity and energy density of probiotic banana milk and its potential as a nutritional intervention for surgical patients. Methods: This study employed an experimental design with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 3 replications in laboratory test. The treatment in this study was to differentiate the proportion between Green Ambon Bananas (Musa acuminata colla) and starter before cooking, which was divided into 3 formulations. Viscosity measurement was assessed using a digital viscometer NDJ-5 (Vevor, Shanghai, China) according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The energy density of probiotic banana milk was measured using the energy ratio formula [kcal] to weight (g). Energy density data were analyzed using ANOVA test. Results: The results showed that both the highest viscosity and density were in F3 (1630 m.pa.s with 0,35 kcal/g) and the lowest was in F1 (472 m.pa.s with 0,31 kcal/g). The ANOVA test showed a difference in energy density in the three formulations with a p-value of 0,003. The results of the post-hoc test showed that there was a difference between each formulation (F1 and F2; F1 and F3; F2 and F3).Conclusion: Sample F3 has the highest viscosity and energy density compared to F1 and F2, so it has the highest potential to be given to pre-and post-surgical patients to help speed up the recovery process.

Abstract

Food safety is a critical public health issue, especially in institutional settings such as university canteens, where large populations are served daily. Inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices by food handlers can lead to foodborne illnesses, placing students and staff at risk. This study evaluated hygiene and sanitation conditions in the canteens of a leading public university in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia, known for its active food service facilities. This study examined food handlers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices and assessed the microbiological safety of chicken curry by testing for Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination and total plate count. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 35 food handlers and 7 chicken curry samples across multiple canteens. Structured questionnaires and microbiological analysis were employed. Results revealed that although most food handlers demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitudes, 57.1% exhibited poor hygiene practices. Several chicken curry samples exceeded acceptable E. coli levels, indicating potential health risks. These findings underscore the urgent need for ongoing hygiene training, strict supervision, and standardized certification for food handlers to mitigate microbial hazards and ensure food safety in university settings.

Abstract

The increase in life expectancy in Indonesia has resulted in a growing elderly population (older adults) who face various health, nutritional, and psychosocial challenges, particularly those living in social care institutions. One alternative approach to address these issues is aquaponic therapy, an integrated system of fish farming and hydroponic cultivation that serves not only as a source of nutritious food but also as an environmental therapy medium. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge, skills, and quality of life of the elderly through aquaponic training and aquaponic therapy at Boarding Care Noor Fatimah, Palembang. The program consisted of two main stages: (1) aquaponic training, including the delivery of basic concepts and hands-on practice in preparing planting media, cultivating water spinach seedlings, and stocking fish fry; and (2) aquaponic therapy, which involved simple activities such as feeding fish, watering plants, harvesting vegetables, and participating in motivational sessions guided by a psychologist. Evaluation was conducted qualitatively through observation and interviews to assess the participation, enthusiasm, and perceptions of both elderly participants and caregivers. The findings indicate that aquaponics training effectively enhanced older adults’ comprehension of the fundamental principles and benefits of the system. Participants demonstrated greater awareness of the importance of maintaining health through healthier dietary practices derived from aquaponic produce. Moreover, aquaponics therapy promoted engagement in light physical activities and nurtured a sense of responsibility in caring for both plants and fish. From an emotional perspective, participants reported increased levels of happiness, satisfaction, and pride, particularly when sharing and consuming the harvest collectively. The main challenges identified were memory limitations and physical constraints of the elderly, as well as limited caregiver availability, which highlighted the need for capacity-building and simplified maintenance systems. Overall, the program not only provided educational and psychosocial benefits but also demonstrated potential to strengthen food security and institutional independence in a sustainable manner.
