Abstract

This study is a qualitative research on reduced clause entitled ” A Syntactic Analysis of Reduced Clauses In The Jakarta Post’s Headlines”. It answers the types and functions of reduced clauses in the Jakarta post headlines, aiming at finding their types and functions. Data of this research are qualitative in type and sentence containing reduced clauses taken from the Jakarta post. In gathering the data, this research used metode simak (observing method). Extralingual method was used to analyze the data to find out the principles or rules of reduced clause types and functions. In displaying data, informal method was used because of ordinary word usage. This research shows that the Jakarta post’s headlines reduced clauses are three types namely present and past participle, infinitive, and appositive. Present participle usually indicates an active sentence, while past participle usually indicates the passive sentence. The reduced clause in participle form is the result of reduced adjective and adverbial clauses. Infinitive which is the result of reduced noun clause may be interpreted as adverbial of purpose or as adjectival. It consists of the complement that remains after relative pronoun and form of be are omitted. Reduced clauses in the Jakarta post’s headlines have three functions namely a modifier, an adverb, and a noun. The function of reduced clause is equivalent to the function of clause itself. Reduced adjective clause serve as an adjective clause to modify noun, reduced adverbial clause serve as adverbial and to modify the verb of the main clause.

Abstract

This objectives of this study are to discuss and describe the ideology and techniques of. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis. The data of this study are qualitative based on types and sentences that use ideology and translation techniques based on Molina and Albir's theories taken from the translation texts of STIBA Bumigora students for the academic year 2017/2018. In gathering data, the researchers use the observation method. The results showed of the 18 translation techniques, there are 8 techniques used by the students consisting of; Adaptation (1.35%), Amplification (2.70%), Borrowing (27.02%), calque (30.40%), Established Equivalent (2.70%), Generalization (1.35%), Literal Translation (33.78%), and Particularization (0.67%). The most widely used of translation technique is Literal Translation with 33.78% occurance. Based on the findings of the translation techniques used by students in translating texts, it can be concluded that the ideology used is forenisation. The the translation techniques that focus on the source language, namely borrowing, Calque and Literal Translation are more dominant, with an average frequency of 25% occurrence in each text according to the use of techniques which is oriented towards the target language which only plays 5 techniques with a frequency of occurrence of less than 10% in each text.

Abstract

Abstract Translation is a process of transfering source text into the target text viewed from the equivalent of meaning, with equvalencies, the message in the translation text will be the same as the target text. Hence, translating is not just the process of tranfering text from the source language into the target language. However, instead of ideas, translation enters compilation, he processes a translation product. The use of appropriate translation techniques also affects the quality of the translation results. This study aims to describe the ideology of translation in Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study are qualitative based on types of words, phrases and sentences containing translation techniques and ideology taken from the translated novel of Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. Based on the analysis of translation techniques and the ideology of translation used in the text, the ideology used in the translation text is foreignization. Based on the analysis, the results of the study show that of the 18 translation techniques, 12 translation techniques were found consisting of; Literal translation (53%), Amplification (11%), Variation (8%), Particularization (6%), Borrowing (6%), Transposition (5%), Reduction (4%), Calque (2%), Compensation (2%). Meanwhile Description, Linguistic Compression, and Established Equivalent occur only in (1%). The result of the study shows that the most dominant technique used in Indonesian version of Agatha Christie’s endless night novel is Literal translation with 82 occurrences frequency or 53%.

Abstract

Inversion is defined as the appearance of the main verb before the subject of an utterance. Using descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyzed phenomenon of language which happens at present. The object of this research is the inversion systems in English. The sources of the data are taken from English books, papers and other resources such as TOEFL test preparation books that related to the topic. In gathering data, the researcher used two techniques namely teknik catat (noting technique) and teknik pisah (separating technique). The result of analyses showed that there are six types of inversion system in terms of forms namely; inverting the main verb to subject, inverting auxiliary verb to subject, adding the auxiliary verb preceding the subject, Inverting the adverb and the subject, Inverting the preposition and the subject, Sentence beginning with there. Meanwhile types of inverted sentence are classified into six. They are interrogative sentence, conditional sentence, statement, comparative sentence, exclamation, reporting sentence. In term of function, there are three functions of inversion namely, emphasizing the negative expression, emphasizing the time expression, and as a variation.

Abstract

A song can be said as a form of expression of the songwriter, about the life experiences he has gone through. Pink Sweat$ is an American singer and songwriter with the R&B genre of music. Pink Sweat$ made its record debut in the music world in 2018 to date. The song Honesty was released in 2018 and received a certificate platinum from the RIAA. In 2020, songs 17 and At My Worst get more than 100 million fans who downloaded the song on the spotify US digital platform. The song from Pink Sweat$ as the object of research, how the simplicity of the lyrics contains many meanings and able to attract music fans to listen to it. To reveal this, the researcher uses the deixis theory of George Yule (1996) in a pragmatic study. Researchers used a qualitative research method approach in this study. The results showed that the use of personal deixis was used more in the three songs, compared to temporal deixis and spatial deixis. Deixis persona refers to Pink Sweat$ himself, it can be said that this song is his personal love life experience.

Abstract

This community service aims to provide not only knowledge but also readiness to face the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) exam for students and lecturers in West Nusa Tenggara. This community service is carried out online using zoom technology as a learning medium for one month. The target community is the campus community, namely students and lecturers from various universities in West Nusa Tenggara. The method used in this community service is the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method, where participants are divided into several groups, then given tips and strategies in answering the TOEFL test. Each group discussed and exchanged ideas in answering all the questions in the TOEFL. The cost of this community service activity is fully sourced from the service implementation team. After the implementation of this community service activity, participants have the ability and readiness as well as a quite significant score than before.

Abstract

This research aim is to know what type of translation technique that is used in translating the fantasy and game term in the fantasy novel “Overlord”. Translation is really important when it comes to information, culture, message, etc between two or more different people who use different language. However, the problem arises when it comes to translate a fantasy stories or games because the translation technique is heavily relied on the culture. Meanwhile, the fantasy stories and games are usually not bounded by one specific culture. This is why this research is needed to be conducted, to answer the question regarding which translation technique that the translator used to approach the fantasy term in the fantasy stories or games, so they can avoid any unnatural or awkwardness translation in the target language. The method that is used to collect the data is to determine the analysis unit which is the fantasy novel “Overlord”. Then, the unit is divided into smaller part which is the fantasy and game term. This research is qualitative research because it uses qualitative method to collect and analyze the data. The descriptive-qualitative approach is used in this research after the data sample is taken from all chapters in the novel before finally reducing the unnecessary and irrelevant data for this research. In analyzing the data, this research used a method where the data condensation, data display, and verifying and drawing conclusion are conducted. The result of this research shown that there are seven (7) translation techniques used in the Novel (translated version), they are: discursive creation (60), established equivalent (15), borrowing (184), Amplification (9), literal translation (118), modulation (29) and Particularization (4).

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of code mixing, especially those found on WhatsApp social media made by bilingual immigrants of Pakistan in everyday life. The descriptive methodology was utilized by the researchers to carry out this study, which concentrated on code-mixing. This study examined how English was used by immigrants to connect with friends in Malaysia, Indonesia, and other countries as well as with friends who were also immigrants from Pakistan who were living in Makassar. The research subject has been living in Makassar for three years. Data was obtained through observation on the WhatsApp of the Bilingual Immigrant account. In order to assess the data, Hoffman's (1991) theory was used. Data analysis revealed that there were five instances of "Intra-Sentential" code-mixing, five instances of "Intra-lexical" code-mixing, and zero instances of code-mixing "involving a change of pronunciation".

Abstract

The integration of the SRL strategy into instructional practices is motivated by the desire to nurture students' autonomy in learning, a trait that is increasingly emphasized in contemporary educational discourse. This study investigates the integration of the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategy into the instructional framework of an Interpretive Reading course. Given the emphasis on fostering students' learning independence inherent in the SRL strategy, it becomes crucial to ensure that instructional practices align with this objective, particularly within the context of a course designed for first-semester university students. The study adopts a case study approach within an Interpretive Reading class at a private university in Indonesia. Here, the focus is on evaluating the instructional strategies vis-à-vis the criteria delineated in each phase of the SRL strategy: Forethought and Planning, Monitoring of Performance, and Reflection on Performance. The findings reveal that the instructional interventions implemented by the lecturer predominantly meet the criteria established for each phase of the SRL strategy. These instructions serve as scaffolding mechanisms, guiding students towards developing their autonomy in learning processes. Furthermore, the study underscores the effectiveness of these instructions in enhancing students' interpretive reading skills. Consequently, the outcomes of this study hold implications for the integration of digital texts within the instructional context, suggesting their potential to further support and enhance student learning experiences in Interpretive Reading classrooms.
