Abstract

The 2019 film Little Women, a recent adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, presents a compelling narrative centered on women, life choices, and the struggle against social constraints. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film not only portrays a warm family story but also explores gender dynamics that resonate with contemporary feminist discourse. Through the experiences of the four March sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy the film becomes a reflection of the diverse and complex forms of female emancipation. This study analyzes Little Women through a feminist lens, employing feminist theory to examine how the film represents gender equality, individual freedom, and resistance to traditional roles within a 19th-century patriarchal society. Each character responds differently to social expectations. Jo, who rejects domestic roles and pursues a writing career, exemplifies liberal feminism and personal agency. Meg consciously embraces marriage and domestic life, illustrating that traditional choices can also be valid forms of empowerment. Amy seeks recognition as an artist while negotiating love and stability, highlighting the multifaceted nature of female identity. Beth, portrayed as gentle and selfless, symbolizes emotional solidarity and sisterhood. The film underscores the significance of women’s autonomy in shaping their own paths and the power of female support systems. By framing the experiences of its characters within both historical and contemporary feminist discourse, Little Women (2019) emerges as a profound and inspiring feminist narrative, one that remains highly relevant in the ongoing pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment

Abstract

This study examines the impact of cultural factors on translation choices in English-language advertising texts. In today’s global marketplace, advertisements function not only as persuasive linguistic tools but also as cultural products that reflect and shape social values. Therefore, translating advertisements requires more than linguistic accuracy—it demands a deep understanding of both source and target cultures. Using a qualitative approach and drawing on theories such as dynamic equivalence and cultural translation, this research analyzes English advertisements and their translations across diverse cultural contexts. The analysis focuses on cultural dimensions such as communication context (high vs. low), individualism vs. collectivism, and power distance. The Findings indicate that cultural aspects such as phrases, humor, and a local symbol often can not be translated directly. Therefore, strategies like adaptation, localization, and cultural substitutions are used to keep the relevance and appeal of the message.  This research affirms that the translator's function as a cultural mediator who must consider both the meaning and the sensitivity of the target audience. This Study also emphasizes the importance of cultural competence and collaboration with cultural consultants or native speakers to guarantee the accuracy and cross-cultural respect. In conclusion, a balanced translation approach between faithfulness to the source message and cultural acceptance is highly important in the context of global communication.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the translation strategies used to render humor in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and to evaluate their effectiveness in the Indonesian translated version. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using a case study approach on 30 humorous language units. The data were classified based on types of humor (verbal, situational, character-based, and musical) and the applied translation strategies, including literal translation, substitution, omission, recreation, and addition. The findings reveal that literal translation was the most frequently used strategy; however, substitution and recreation were found to be the most effective in preserving humor and cultural relevance. In contrast, omission and literal translation often weakened the humorous effect when not adapted to the target culture. These results emphasize the importance of cultural sensitivity and translator creativity in literary translation, particularly in children's literature, to ensure that humor and intended messages remain accessible to the target readers. This research contributes to the field of literary translation, especially in addressing cross-cultural humor translation.

Abstract

The integration of the SRL strategy into instructional practices is motivated by the desire to nurture students' autonomy in learning, a trait that is increasingly emphasized in contemporary educational discourse. This study investigates the integration of the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategy into the instructional framework of an Interpretive Reading course. Given the emphasis on fostering students' learning independence inherent in the SRL strategy, it becomes crucial to ensure that instructional practices align with this objective, particularly within the context of a course designed for first-semester university students. The study adopts a case study approach within an Interpretive Reading class at a private university in Indonesia. Here, the focus is on evaluating the instructional strategies vis-à-vis the criteria delineated in each phase of the SRL strategy: Forethought and Planning, Monitoring of Performance, and Reflection on Performance. The findings reveal that the instructional interventions implemented by the lecturer predominantly meet the criteria established for each phase of the SRL strategy. These instructions serve as scaffolding mechanisms, guiding students towards developing their autonomy in learning processes. Furthermore, the study underscores the effectiveness of these instructions in enhancing students' interpretive reading skills. Consequently, the outcomes of this study hold implications for the integration of digital texts within the instructional context, suggesting their potential to further support and enhance student learning experiences in Interpretive Reading classrooms.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of directive speech acts, the directive speech act strategies, and the types of directive speech act that are most widely used by English teachers at SMKN 2 Mataram. The research method used is the mixed method. The source of the data in this study was one of the teachers who taught English at SMKN 2 Mataram majoring in the Tourism Industry. Data were obtained from spoken sources, by listening to the teacher's speech acts to students in the learning process in the classroom. The data collection techniques used in this study are SLBC, the recording technique, and the note-taking/transcript technique. The technique of analyzing data uses 3 ways, namely: reduce data, display data, and draw or verify data. The research results show that there are 5 types of directive speech acts, namely directive speech telling 31.65%, asking 27.85%, suggesting 8.86%, Advising 10.76%, and Challenging 20.89%. Furthermore, there are 2 speech strategies, namely direct 96.30% and indirect 3.70%. Telling is the highest percentage of the types of directive speech acts used by teachers, even though what should be needed is other types of directive speech acts. Because based on many studies, directive telling has little effect on providing understanding to students in the learning process. The results of this study are expected to contribute to teachers being able to convey various directive speech acts in the classroom with the right strategy in the learning process. Therefore, the teacher's speech acts must be able to direct students to the learning process.
