Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are essential components of coastal environments and play a strategic role in maintaining the stability and sustainability of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to analyze seagrass species diversity and the role of seagrass biodiversity in supporting marine ecosystem conservation in the Nias Islands, North Sumatra. The research was conducted at three locations: La’aya Village (North Nias Regency), Fodo Waters (Gunungsitoli City), and waters near Sirombu Port (West Nias Regency), using the quadrat transect method during the lowest low tide. Data analysis included density, frequency, cover, Important Value Index (IVI), and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′). The results identified five seagrass species, namely Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, and Thalassia hemprichii. Syringodium isoetifolium was the dominant species with the highest IVI across all study sites. The seagrass diversity index values ranged from 1.55 to 1.57, indicating a moderate level of diversity and a relatively stable community structure. These findings suggest that seagrass ecosystems in the Nias Islands are still functioning effectively and play a crucial role in supporting coastal stability, marine biodiversity, and as a scientific basis for sustainable marine ecosystem management and conservation. Abstract

The southern coastal region of Manado Bay is experiencing intensive development pressure alongside increasing tourism activities and marine space utilization. These conditions have the potential to cause degradation of shallow-water benthic habitats, which play a vital ecological role. This study aims to map and analyze the spatio-temporal changes of shallow-water benthic habitats in southern Manado Bay using Sentinel-2A satellite imagery as the primary data source. Analysis was conducted using Sentinel-2A imagery from the 2017-2023 period through stages of image pre-processing, water column correction, and unsupervised classification using the K-means algorithm. Evaluation of the classification results was performed using an error matrix to obtain overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient values. The results indicate that the overall accuracy ranged from 72-78% with Kappa coefficients between 0.60-0.71. Spatio-temporal analysis indicates a significant decline in live coral cover from 41.09% to 28.17% during the 2017-2023 period, accompanied by an increase in dead coral area and sand substrates. These findings demonstrate that Sentinel-2A imagery can be effectively utilized for monitoring the dynamics of shallow-water benthic habitats at a regional scale and has the potential to support sustainable coastal zone planning and management. Abstract

Bigeye scad (Selar crumenophthalmus Bloch 1793) is rich source of proteins, Omega-3 fatty acids, and various important vitamins and minerals for human body, that makes the fish has an important economic value. Additionally, because of forming an important shoal on coastal seawaters, the fish is frequently captured, notably by purseseiners in an important quantity from the FMA 716 of North Sulawesi seawaters. The intensiveness captures of the fish may affect the sustainability and continuity life of the species. The research aims at analyzing some biological reproduction aspects of species based on gender and fishing season. The 400 samples, 200 tails on May and 200 tails on August 2022, have selected by a purposive random sampling from the captures. Data analisys refers to some common formulas, such as the length and weight size structure, sex and weight ratio, W-L relationship (W = aLb, W = weight, g), L = length (cmFL), a and b constants, condition factor (K), length at first capture (Lc50%). The legal size is determined by comparing the length at first capture (Lc50%) observed and at first maturity (Lm50%) reference. On May, the sample weight is 33,439 g (51.8% of 400 samples), the sex and weight ratios are 1:1.08 and 1:1.36 respectively with the conversion factor (cf) of 1.26. The average length and weight sizes are 21.62 ± 0.17 cm and 167.20 ± 5.15 g respectively, where the average weight per 1 cmFL is 7.67 ± 0.18 g. The L-W relationship follows W = 0.1492 L 3.0785 (r = 0.86) for male, W = 0.0566 L 3.8088 (r = 0.90) for female, and W = 0.0864 L 3.4940 (r = 0.91) for all, with K average of 1.60 ± 0.02 for male, 1.66 ± 0.03 for female, and 1.63 ± 0.02 for 200 samples. On August, the sample weight is 31,115 g (48.2% of 400 samples), the sex and weight ratios are 1:1.50 and 1:1.82 respectively, with cf of 1.21. The average length and weight sizes are 21.49 ± 0.16 cm and 155.58 ± 4.71 g respectively, where the average weight per 1 cmFL is 7.19 ± 0.17 g. The L-W relationship follows W = 0.1515 L 3.047 (r = 0.88) for male, W = 0.0789 L 3.5485 (r = 0.88) for female, and W = 0.0836 L 3.5023 (r = 0.90) for all samples, with K average of 1.50 ± 0.02 for male, 1.58 ± 0.03for female, and K of 1.55 ± 0.02 for 200 samples. On both fishing seasons, all captures are categorized a positive allometry (b>3) and 96.75% of captures has a legal size. All females have passed their first maturity stage. For this reason, the fishermen must consider carefully when they catch the fishes, outside of the two months. Considering the intensiveness of fishing activities to such species, it is indispensable since early for all stakeholders designing a regulation to limitate captutes by gender size and fishing seasons, for all species of high potential and economic value of high density of shoals. Abstract

This study documents and identifies the diversity of coral reefs and reef fish species in the waters of Bangka Island, North Sulawesi, a coastal area rich in marine biodiversity and ecologically and economically important to the local community. The Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method was used through snorkeling and diving at depths of less than 18 meters at three locations (Coral Eye house reef, Tanjung Husi, and Linggua) from March 14 to April 4, 2025. Visual data were collected and identified in the Coral Eye Library. The results indicate that the coral reef ecosystem around Coral Eye is dominated by branching corals (Acropora) and stony corals (massive), which are important habitats for reef fish. The reef fish community is dominated by the families Pomacentridae and Chaetodontidae at depths of less than 20 meters. Fish were grouped into indicator fish (family Chaetodontidae with 6 species), target fish (5 families with 10 species, including Serranidae, Mullidae, Siganidae, Labridae, and Scaridae), and major groups (14 families with 34 species). This study provides strategic recommendations for maintaining and preserving coral reef ecosystems and reef fish diversity on Bangka Island. Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effects of initial seed weight and cultivation depth on the growth of Caulerpa lentillifera in a vertical culture system using monofilament nylon rope as the planting medium in the coastal waters of Bahoi Village, North Minahasa. A 3×3 factorial design was applied, consisting of three initial weights (50 g, 100 g, and 150 g) and three depths (20 cm, 70 cm, and 120 cm), each with three replications. Observed parameters included absolute growth and specific growth rate (SGR) over a 28-day cultivation period. The results indicated that initial weight significantly affected growth, whereas depth had no significant effect and no interaction was detected between the two factors. The 50 g treatment produced the highest growth performance with an SGR of 1.39 ± 0.08% day⁻¹, which falls within the productivity range of tropical open-sea farming systems. These findings highlight that optimizing seed weight plays a more critical role than shallow depth variation in improving the cultivation efficiency of C. lentillifera under a monofilament nylon-based vertical culture system. Keywords: initial weight; marine aquaculture; C. lentillifera; monofilament nylon; vertical culture system. Abstract

This study examines Indonesia’s export performance in an agribusiness product at the HS 6-digit level (HS 1511) over 2015-2023 by combining revealed competitiveness indicators and structural gravity estimation. First, we compute the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index to assess Indonesia’s export specialization relative to world trade. Second, we estimate a Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) gravity model with year fixed effects to identify the roles of destination market size, trade costs, and trade agreement coverage. Bilateral exports are constructed from UN Comtrade, macroeconomic controls are drawn from the World Development Indicators, bilateral distance and dyadic controls are obtained from CEPII, and trade agreement status is coded from DESTA at the dyad–year level using an in-force rule. Results indicate that Indonesia retains a strong revealed comparative advantage (RCA > 1 in all years), although the average RCA declines between early and late sub-periods. Gravity estimates show that destination market size (particularly population) positively predicts exports, while distance reduces expected export values. Importantly, in-force regional trade agreements are associated with significantly higher bilateral exports, approximately 48% larger export values, ceteris paribus, highlighting the relevance of policy-enabled market access alongside traditional gravity fundamentals. These findings emphasize the joint importance of competitiveness, trade-cost reduction, and effective utilization of trade agreements for sustaining and expanding Indonesia’s agribusiness exports. Abstract

Public programs supporting community-based ecotourism frequently face the problem of allocating limited budgets across multiple candidate villages that differ in attraction quality, service readiness, accessibility, and community capacity. This study develops a transparent decision support approach to prioritize government assistance for five community-based ecotourism villages in North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, assessed during September to October 2025. The 4A destination framework was operationalized into 12 criteria representing Attraction, Amenity, Access, and Activity, and criterion weights were elicited through expert judgment averaging from an eight-member multistakeholder panel. The Multi Objective Optimization on the basis of Ratio Analysis method was applied to normalize the decision matrix, incorporate weights, and compute optimization scores. The resulting priority ranking was Budo (A3) with a MOORA score of 0.4036, Kakaskasen II (A4) with 0.3928, Bahoi (A1) with 0.3744, Pulisan (A2) with 0.3279, and Poopo (A5) with 0.2564. Dimension level interpretation indicates that Budo’s leading position is driven by strong amenity readiness and the most favorable access contribution, while Kakaskasen II performs strongly through activity diversity and homestay capacity but requires strengthened environmental management. Bahoi emerges as a conservation-oriented option constrained mainly by access and connectivity, whereas Pulisan and Poopo are primarily limited by minimum service readiness and travel time. A sensitivity check on the travel time weight shows stable ranks under plausible weight shifts, supporting the robustness of the prioritization. The study contributes an auditable ranking tool and criterion level development levers to guide staged, evidence-based allocation of government support for community-based ecotourism. Abstract

This preliminary study investigated the reproductive biology of three rabbitfish species Siganus doliatus, Siganus canaliculatus, and Siganus puellus collected from Sopura Bay, Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. A total of 351 individuals were analyzed between September and November 2025 to determine sex ratio, gonad maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and length at first gonad maturity (Lₘ). The results showed male-biased populations in S. puellus (1.53:1) and S. doliatus (1.82:1), while S. canaliculatus exhibited a balanced sex ratio (1.01:1). Most individuals were at gonad maturity stages III–IV, indicating active gonadal development during the sampling period, with the spawning peak estimated in late October to November. The Lₘ values differed between species and sexes, suggesting adaptive reproductive strategies, where males generally matured at smaller sizes than females. The highest GSI values were recorded in S. puellus, indicating higher reproductive activity. These findings provide essential baseline data for understanding reproductive patterns and support sustainable management of rabbitfish resources in Sopura Bay
