Abstract

The present study aimed at analyzing round and dynamic characters to look into the various dimensions of the antagonist in Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera and to reveal positive characterizations of an antagonist who is otherwise condemned as inherently evil due to its narrative function. The research was done under textual analysis employing McKee's (2003) as the grounded research design. The data were obtained from Gaston Leroux's Novel (1910), The Phantom of the Opera, in which Erik, the main antagonist, was focused the most. The data were gathered through some instruments, including notes and a table of classifications. The present study figures out some of the antagonist’s favorable characterizations even when he lived in difficult situations: talented singer, skillful entertainer, tenacious songwriter, and faithful lover. These findings imply that favorable values can be obtained even from the antagonists, rendering readers to be more critical in judging characters.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of reference as markers of propositional relations in essays written by junior high school students. This study employed a qualitative method in data collection and data analysis. The population and research samples were 94 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 1 in Balikpapan, Indonesia, ranging in age from 13 to 14. Data collection in this research was carried out using the listening method after the essay as a source of research data obtained from the research sample. The data analysis in this study consisted of three stages that were completed interactively: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This study suggest that participants utilized three distinct kinds of reference to denote propositional relations in their essays: third-person pronoun, non-person pronoun, and demonstrative pronoun. The third person pronoun was found to be widely used but did not vary significantly among participants. Meanwhile, participants’ usage of non-person pronouns resulted in numerous interpretations, and it was discovered that derived demonstrative pronouns were overused. These findings demonstrate the participants’ strengths and shortcomings in using reference to connect one proposition to another.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of interest and motivation in hybrid learning on the learning outcomes of Indonesian language courses. The method used in this research is quantitative. The population of this study were all students of Indraprasta PGRI University. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The number of samples in this study was 88. The hybrid learning interest and motivation instruments have been validated. Quantitative data analysis tested the significance of the regression coefficient and calculated the regression line equation. The results revealed that the application of hybrid learning interests and motivations had significant effects on learning outcomes. This finding can be seen from the results of the t test. It can be seen that the Sig value is 0.000 and Fhitung is 19.682, while Ftabel is 3.104, so the Sig value is < 0.05 and Fhitung > Ftabel, or regression significance. The paradigm of emphasizing motivation for students has an effect on students' ability to learn.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the internalization of inclusive education through children's literature with the theme of disability. The research data are words, phrases and sentences in the children's book Meine Füße sind der Rollstuhl, which shows the internalization of inclusive education values, shown by the character Margit, and other characters. The research data source is the children's story Meine Füße sind der Rollstuhl, written by Franz-Joseph Huainigg, published in 2003. Data collection involved utilizing note-taking techniques to capture key aspects of the narrative. Subsequently, all gathered data underwent analysis using both a referential identity approach and reflective, introspective methods. The results of this study show that literary works, especially children's literature, can be a beneficial media for internalizing inclusive education. The introduction and internalization of inclusion education values through children's literature with disability themes is relevant to develop children’s positive character. It is in consonance with what Horace stated about the function of literature that not only entertains but also educates. The internalization of inclusive education values through disability-themed children's literature, both receptively and productively, is expected to help overcome the problems of implementing inclusive education in Indonesia so that equality in education, as all people aspire to, can be realized.
