Abstract

As the need for equality in education is fundamental, this study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research on English Teaching in Inclusive Education (ETIE) indexed in Scopus from 1997 to 2023. The aim is to systematically examine the scope and trends within ETIE literature, identifying gaps and opportunities for future research. Utilizing a methodical approach for 201 Scopus-indexed publications, the study progresses through four distinct phases: initial database search using Publish or Perish, rigorous filtering of publications based on predefined bibliometric criteria, verification of data accuracy with Mendeley Desktop, and detailed analysis employing VOSviewer. The findings reveal a concerning decline in ETIE publications over time, suggesting a waning academic interest in this crucial area of study. Despite the decrease in publications, the analysis highlights several key areas that remain underexplored and could significantly benefit from further scholarly attention. The study underscores the importance of increased research collaboration and the adoption of more inclusive education practices in English teaching. Implications of this research are far-reaching, offering critical insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers. By providing a clearer understanding of the current landscape of ETIE research, the study paves the way for enhancing educational practices and supports the development of more inclusive educational environments. This will, in turn, contribute to the broader goal of ensuring equitable education access for all students, particularly those within diverse learning contexts.

Abstract

Students need to be able to speak English, yet many fail owing to a lack of classroom experience. While teachers often explain content, students mostly listen, which limits improvements. To solve this, innovative teaching strategies, like the duet conversation strategy, can help improve students' speaking abilities.The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of duet conversation strategy using TikTok on students’ speaking skill. The method of this study was pre-experimental research. The design used in this study was one group pre-test and post-test design for one group. The research participants were 31 students of a state junior high school in Magelang.Oral tests were carried out to collect research data. The data was analysed by a statistical expert using paired sample t-test. Based on the result of paired sample t-test, the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 lower than 0.05. The result showed that duet conversation strategy on TikTok significantly affect students' speaking abilities. This study highlights the effectiveness ofduet conversation strategyusing TikTok can be implemented as an alternate media to assist learners in improving their speaking skill.  However, there are still some difficulties such as the presence of unfamiliar words and lack of time when students are practicing using duet conversation on TikTok. Implementing duet conversation strategy on TikTok has the potential to increase students' speaking abilities, but it must be carefully planned and integrated into the curriculum to coincide with more formal and organized language learning objectives.

Abstract

Although vocabulary learning is a fundamental aspect of Arabic language acquisition, it is often perceived as monotonous and ineffective, particularly in Ma’had settings where access to technological resources is limited. This study explores the implementation of a project-based learning (PBL) model using mind maps to improve Arabic vocabulary learning and examines students' responses to this pedagogical approach. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, focusing on female students at Ma’had Babul Khairat. Data were gathered through observations, questionnaires, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's framework, which involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the PBL model integrated with mind maps offers an innovative and effective solution for Arabic vocabulary acquisition in resource-constrained settings. Students reported that the approach was engaging and interactive, making it easier to remember and internalize vocabulary. Additionally, the use of mind maps significantly enhanced their motivation, interest, and active participation in the learning process. The method also encouraged collaboration and creativity among students, fostering a more dynamic and student-centered learning environment. These results highlight the potential of project-based learning with mind mapping as a practical pedagogical tool in Ma’had settings. This model not only addresses the challenges of traditional vocabulary learning but also contributes to the development of innovative teaching strategies that align with the needs and preferences of students in such educational contexts

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of code-mixing and code-switching by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) faculty members in the digital learning environment. While code-switching and code-mixing have been examined in various educational contexts, there remains a notable gap in understanding their intentional use within the digital learning environment, where faculty members deliberately alternate or mix languages to enhance clarity, engage students, and achieve specific teaching objectives in an online context. This study addresses this gap by examining how faculty members strategically employ these linguistic phenomena to enhance the learning experience in technologically mediated instructional settings. Employing qualitative research design and a case study approach, data were collected through documentation, observation, and semi-structured interviews. Two experienced EFL faculty members from a university in Malang, Indonesia, were selected as participants due to their expertise in code-switching and digital learning environments. The findings reveal complex code-mixing patterns, including inner, outer, and hybrid forms, while code-switching is observed in interlanguage transitions and shifts between formal and informal language. EFL faculty members intentionally utilize these linguistic strategies to enhance student comprehension. Switching between languages helps explain difficult concepts, clarify ideas, and foster better understanding. Bilingualism and situational context emerge as key factors influencing language choices in the digital learning environment, shaping the pedagogical practices for EFL educators. The implications of this study highlight the strategic role of language alternation in technologically mediated instructional settings, emphasizing its potential to enrich the pedagogical approaches of EFL educators in digital learning environments.

Abstract

This study is one part of a larger study that aims to develop instructional material in the form of a handbook for second-year university students who take an academic writing unit. A qualitative method was employed as the design of this study, involving an in-depth exploration of the lecturer's perspectives and practices. We purposefully recruited four lecturers who taught this unit as study participants to gain authentic perspectives of the intended study context. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews with ten prepared open-ended questions as a guideline and additional questions as needed. Any recurring topics and patterns from the collected data were further identified using a framework developed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings categorized issues faced by EFL students in academic writing into three themes: 1) language skills, 2) writing skills, and 3) technology integration. These challenges focus on grammatical structures, paragraph and essay construction, awareness of plagiarism, and proper use of technology to support their writing practice. Meanwhile, in terms of instructional material development, as well as the three factors above, the study revealed the need to include four relevant teaching activities in the process. Therefore, the suggested topics for the instructional materials centre around these four categories.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the influence of Arabic vocabulary absorption in the communication of the Gorontalo community and its impact on Arabic language learning. The research’s background was the long-term interaction between the Gorontalo and Arabic languages through Islamic religious teaching, which led to significant changes in the phonology, morphology, and semantics of the Gorontalo language. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive and contrastive analysis approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation in Limboto District, focusing on Pone and Biyonga villages. The study identified over 150 Gorontalo vocabulary words absorbed from Arabic, spanning various aspects of daily life, both religious and secular. Phonological and morphological changes demonstrated adaptation processes, while semantic changes reflected contextualization within the local culture. These findings underscored the importance of contrastive-based Arabic teaching approaches tailored for Gorontalo speakers, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of language learning. By addressing the specific linguistic characteristics of the Gorontalo language, such strategies could improve learners’ understanding and retention of Arabic vocabulary. In conclusion, this study provides significant insights into the linguistic interplay between Arabic and Gorontalo, offering a foundation for developing more contextualized and effective language learning strategies. It contributes to the broader field of sociolinguistics and language pedagogy.

Abstract

This research compares the translation ideologies applied to onomatopoeia in level two children’s literature on the StoryWeaver website. Translators at Story Weaver often face a dilemma between preserving the original sound (onomatopoeia) or adapting it to the perception of children in the target culture. It aims to provide insights into effective translation techniques for onomatopoeia and to contribute to translation theory by examining the ideologies on cross-cultural understanding in children's literature. The study focuses on translation products, using linguistic and translation data, including techniques, methods, and ideologies. Data sources comprised documents and informants. The documents included nine children’s literature translated by The Story Weaver Community, The Asian Foundation, and the Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa while informants were raters. Data collection involved document analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Data analysis employed domain analysis, taxonomy, component analysis, and cultural themes to identify, categorize, and understand how translation techniques and ideologies affect cultural understanding. The findings indicate that translators from The StoryWeaver Community and The Asian Foundation generally favor target language-oriented techniques (adaptation, established equivalent) with adaptation methods and domestication ideologies. In contrast, translators from Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa (Agency for Language Development and Cultivation.) often employ source language-oriented techniques (Pure borrowing, naturalized borrowing., literal), use literal translation methods and foreignization ideologies. The study hopes to serve as a reference for translating onomatopoeia, offering valuable insights into how different translation techniques affect the translation ideologies outcomes.

Abstract

Grounded in Freire’s (1971) critical pedagogy premise revealing that the act of listening should be active, critical, and transformative, rather than passive or merely receptive, this research explored the experience of English language lecturers who taught English listening classes with a critical pedagogy approach. This study employed a qualitative method through a case study design to explore lecturers' understanding in depth and their practices of critical pedagogy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four lecturers and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The analysis identified key themes in lecturers' understanding, including their awareness of the transformative potential of listening activities, the importance of fostering student autonomy, and their understanding of listening as a dialogic process. The findings also indicate that while lecturers did not explicitly define or describe critical pedagogy, certain stages and elements of it were evident in their teaching. In practice, lecturers applied the principles of critical pedagogy by providing authentic materials, building horizontal relationships, developing critical consciousness, encouraging critical, democratic, and participatory assessment to support transformative learning, while contending with challenges like low student engagement, language proficiency, and diverse accents. This suggests that, to some extent, they incorporated aspects of critical pedagogy in their listening classes. The practical implications of this research recommend that lecturers should receive targeted training in critical pedagogy to better align their teaching practices with its principles, while institutions should provide resources and support to address the challenges.

Abstract

This study analyzes Ali Ahmad Bakatsir’s Biladaka Ya Hatta using Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory to explore themes of nationalism during Indonesia’s independence struggle. The poem, rich in metaphor, enjambment, and symbolic language, portrays both the spiritual and political dimensions of Indonesia’s fight for freedom. Through Riffaterre’s heuristic and hermeneutic reading methods, the research uncovers how the poem's surface meanings evolve into deeper interpretations. Bakatsir’s strategic use of language highlight’s themes of patriotism and unity, with vivid imagery such as "heaven and lake" evoking Indonesia's natural beauty, and "the blowing storm of disaster" emphasizing the nation's enduring hardships. The poem’s intertextuality bridges classical Arabic literary traditions with Indonesia’s contemporary socio-political context, linking the fight for national identity to broader global struggles, including solidarity with Palestine. This fusion of cultural influences underlines the poem’s ongoing relevance in shaping national consciousness. Through Riffaterre’s semiotic framework, the study reveals how Biladaka Ya Hatta transcends mere patriotic sentiment, offering a complex, multilayered narrative of resistance and collective memory. The poem’s linguistic richness, interwoven with psychological and cultural significance, underscores its importance in both personal and national identity formation. The research demonstrates the enduring relevance of semiotic analysis in literary studies and its adaptability in exploring works that engage with themes of nationalism and social transformation.

Abstract

Despite the extensive research on collocation translation, studies examining the influence of translation techniques on translation quality—specifically accuracy, acceptability, and readability—are scarce. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the impact of translation techniques on three aspects of lexical collocation translation quality and offers pertinent insights into evaluating translator competence. Employing a qualitative approach, this research identifies translation patterns within a broader context. Content analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) are utilized to gather and validate two primary types of data: linguistic data in the form of lexical collocations from the subtitles of the film Elemental: Forces of Nature, and translation data including translation techniques and their quality. The collected data is analyzed using Spradley's (1980) analytical model as adapted by Santosa (2017), which encompasses domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme analysis. Findings indicate that the dominance of techniques such as established equivalence, transposition, and modulation significantly contributes to high translation quality, assessed in terms of accuracy (2.8), acceptability (2.89), and readability (2.89). These findings highlight the significance of translator proficiency in managing lexical collocations and present substantial implications for EFL instruction in tackling the difficulties of collocation translation. The TQA instrument in this study assists educators in recognizing and correcting prevalent errors in collocation translation, thereby enhancing students' proficiency in translating intricate texts and fostering critical thinking skills related to source texts and their translations.
