Abstract

This research investigated the idiomatic expressions in the song lyrics of the Aladdin (2019) film soundtrack. Aladdin (2019) is a live-action adaptation of the One Thousand and One Night tales, based on Walt Disney's 1992 animated film of the same title. The aim of this study is to identify the types of idioms and meanings in Aladdin (2019) film soundtrack lyrics. This study applied a qualitative approach, drawing on Adam Makkai's theory of idiomatic expression and Geoffrey Leech's seven types of meaning theory. The results showed that 72 idioms have been used throughout the six songs chosen in the soundtrack. The researcher discovered every form of idioms, with tournure idioms being the most common, followed by phrasal verb, pseudo, irreversible binomials, phrasal compound, and incorporating verb. The research discovered that each of the six songs picked has a unique significance. In general, Aladdin portrays timeless themes like self-discovery, love, friendship, and the desire for freedom. Readers will gain a comprehensive understanding of what idioms are, their various types and classification, their usage and function in communication, and how they are processed by the speakers. This research also explores cross-linguistics comparison and their presence in literature and media.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher analyzed the main female character named Pheby. There are two aims in this research, they are to identify the forms of liberal feminism through Pheby's character and to analyse the historical moments that influence the female main character in the novel. The researcher conducted this research using the theory of liberal feminism by Rosemarie Tong, and the Sociological Perspective by Laurenson and Swingewood. The results of this research found three aspects of liberal feminism based on Tong's theory in the form of equal education, equal liberty, and equal rights. The historical moments that occur in the novel are reflected in liberal feminism as portrayed by the main female character.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the euphemism uttered by March Sisters in Little Women (2019) film, focusing on what types of euphemisms and what the functions of euphemisms appear in the film with a sociolinguistic approach using Burridge (2012) theory. The researcher then displays the findings qualitatively. The result of this research shows that, the March Sisters; Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth used thirty six euphemisms including eight different types of euphemism out of fifteen; metaphor, underestimate, hyperbole, ellipsis, circumlocution, affixation, rhyming, and external borrowing. Meanwhile, for the functions, March Sisters used all six functions of euphemism; protective, underhand, uplifting, provocative, cohesive, and ludic. Jo is the most user of metaphor because she frequently used a non-literal sentences. Jo mostly used euphemism to protect the listener’s feeling as she is an empathetic person. Amy, as the spoilest one, she is the most underestimate user. She used it to avoid some existing fact, which is to protect herself from feeling embarrassed. Beth used metaphor and hyperbole, but for the function, she used it all as a protective euphemism to protect the listener’s feeling because all of her euphemism words are related to dead, she died in the film caused by scarlet fever. Meg is the least euphemism user. She only use hyperbole twice and circumlocution once but all of them used as a protection to her self-esteem because she is easy to be provoked. In conclusion, March Sisters used euphemism differently based on their personality.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the social construction of masculinity in the phenomenon of klitih gang crime in Yogyakarta. Klitih crimes, involving male adolescents, are viewed as a form of criminal subculture oriented towards violence as a means of gaining recognition and social existence. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were obtained through document analysis, media reports, and online platforms used by klitih gang members. This descriptive qualitative approach provides in-depth insights into the motivations and perceptions of klitih perpetrators in constructing their masculine identity through violence. The findings reveal that hegemonic masculinity plays a significant role in the violent actions committed by the klitih gang. Klitih gang members tend to use violence not for economics gain but as a tool to enhance their social status and reinforce an aggressive and dominant masculine identity. This phenomenon reflects how societal norms surrounding masculinity can drive violent behavior among adolescents. This study is expected to contribute to cultural criminology studies and help in formulating social intervention strategies to address youth violence in Yogyakarta.Keywords: Cultural criminology, hegemonic masculinity, klitih gang, social construction,youth violence

Abstract

Deiksis adalah suatu kata yang referennya berubah-ubah atau tidak tetap. Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, deiksis banyak digunakan dalam percakapan, surat kabar, dan karya sastra salah satunya adalah novel. Novel Tenggelamnya kapal Van Der Wijck karya Hamka ini memiliki 224 halaman. Dalam novel ini Hamka menceritakan kisah Zainuddin (tokoh dalam novel) dengan menggunakan beberapa jenis deiksis. Deiksis dapat diketahui maknanya jika diketahui pula siapa, di mana, dan kapan deiksis itu diucapkan. Jadi, pusat orientasi deiksis adalah penutur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk dan fungsi deiksis persona yang terdapat dalam Novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Karya Hamka.Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan jenis penilitian kepustakaan. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa kalimat dialog yang terdapat dalam Novel Tenggelamnya kapal Van Der Wijck karya Hamka. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik baca dan teknik catat. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode padan ekstralingual.Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan bentuk-bentuk deiksis yang digunakan dalam Novel “Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck” karya Hamka antara lain deiksis persona pertama tunggal (aku, -ku, saya dan nya), deiksis persona pertama jamak (kami, dan kita), deiksis persona kedua tunggal (kau, anda, kamu, dan -mu), deiksis persona kedua jamak (kalian), deiksis persona ketiga tunggal (ia, dia, dan - nya), deiksis persona ketiga jamak (mereka). Ditemukan juga tiga fungsideiksis dalam penelitian ini, diantaranya, fungsi emotif, fungsi referensial, dan fungsi konatif. Secara keseluruhan hasil analisis dalam Novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Karya Hamka dapat disimpulkan bahwa bentuk deiksis persona tidak bergantung pada kata ganti orang pertama, kedua dan ketiga. Berdasarkan referen yang diacunya, deiksis persona dapat dengan bebas memilih sebagai bentuk kata ganti persona ke berapa ia memosisikan keberadaanya dalam konteks. Dalam bahasa Indonesia penggunaan sistem deiksis persona merujuk pada penggunaan sistem bentuk kata ganti persona yang memiliki bentuk dan fungsi yang berbeda- beda. Hal ini disebut dengan pembalikan deksis.Kata kunci : bentuk persona, deiksis persona, fungsi deiksis persona, novel.

Abstract

Transmisi nilai pada budaya Jawa menggunakan media secara lisan. Salah satu transmisi nilai pada budaya Jawa adalah gugon tuhon, yaitu larangan atau pantangan diberikan oleh orang tua kepada anak yang meliputi makna tersirat dengan ciri khas mistis dan irasional dengan tujuan agar anak berperilaku yang seharusnya sesuai dengan norma. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengulas transmisi nilai pada budaya Jawa melalui gugon tuhon dalam perspektif psikologi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode library research. Temuan dari penelitian adalah gugon tuhon digunakan sebagai transmisi nilai pada budaya jawa oleh orang tua untuk memberikan nilai-nilai pada anak agar mereka dapat bertindak sepatutnya relevan dengan berbagai teori psikologi yang meliputi teori pengondisian operan, tahapan perkembangan moral dan kognitif, serta konformitas terhadap norma sosial. Penggunaan gugon tuhon juga memiliki tantangan yang dipengaruhi oleh kematangan rasional, pendidik, dan globalisasi.

Abstract

Syntax is the structure of sentences, the established rules of usage for arrangement of the words of sentence into their proper forms and relation. To get more understanding about syntax, the writer presents the syntax analysis on sentence patterns used in Louis Tomlinson song lyrics with album Walls by using the theory of sentence patterns by Quirk and Greenbaum. This research also used the theory of tree diagram by O’Grady, Dobrovolsky, and Katamba to help the writer in analysing sentence patterns. In this study the writer used qualitative method. The data of this research are words, phrases, and sentences related to the analysis of sentence pattern especially in Two of Us, Defenceless, and Kill My Mind song. From the result, through the sentences selected by the writer, the writer found that the most number of the sentence pattern in Louis Tomlinson’s song lyrics is sentence pattern number 3: S + Vt + dO which is used for 5 times.

Abstract

This research analyzes the Gone Girl film protagonist character which is Amy Dunne. The purpose of this research is to find the archetypes representation of Amy Dunne using Jung's theory. The data were generated from the actions and dialogues from the film script and Amy's representation of the archetypes. There are four kinds of archetypes in order to acknowledge the representation of archetypes. They are ‘persona’, ‘shadow’, ‘anima and animus’, and ‘self’. With the archetypes and characterization assistance in analyzing the archetypes represented by the main characters, it is found that Amy Dunne shows archetypes from her. The archetype itself has four types, and Amy shows four types which are persona, shadow, animus, and self. While analyzing this film, with the help film’s characterization method the researcher found that the ‘shadow’ dominates Amy Dunne’s character. It can be stated that the shadow was the archetype that most accurately depicted Amy's personality. the researcher hopes that this research will be useful for readers about those archetypes that can occur in everyday life and that people can show different personalities to their surroundings.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami fungsi, kategori, peran gramatika pada tagline iklan rokok di Indonesia. Data penelitian berupa kalimat pada tagline iklan rokok yang dipasarkan di Indonesia dipilih sesuai topik penelitian. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori fungsi, kategori, dan peran sintaksis yang dikemukakan oleh Verhaar (2016) dan Sawardi (2021). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan metode simak dan catat. Data penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan metode agih dan teknik sisip, teknik lesap, teknik perluas. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan fungsi sintaksis berpola S-P-O, S-P, dan S-P-K. Hasil penemuan (1) berdasarkan kategori: S berkategori nomina, P berkategori verba, kategori verba, adjektiva, frasa verba, dan frasa adjektiva, sedangkan O berkategori nomina, (2) berdasarkan peran: S berperan sebagai agentif dan reseptif, P berperan sebagai aktif, dan predikatif, sedangkan O berperan sebagai objektif.  Fungsi, kategori, dan peran tersebut tetap dipatuhi oleh beberapa tagline iklan rokok di Indonesia, namun ada juga beberapa tagline yang tidak menggunakan struktur sintaksis suatu bahasa.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to analyze discrimination aspects received by the monster character using discrimination theory. The result of this study showed that the monster character received discriminative treatment from the other characters in the form of alienation. The types of discrimination found namely direct and indirect discrimination. Direct discrimination is a type of discrimination committed by someone against another person in direct action, such as bullying, and making a person is rejected in society. On the other hand, indirect discrimination is discrimination that takes the form of a policy or attitude, which has an indirect effect on someone but also does not get equality in society. The use of two types indicates that the creature is discriminated against due to its external appearance, which is very ugly and creepy and cannot be accepted by other characters that come into contact with the discriminated monster.
