Abstract

Background: The increasing reliance on non-familial early childhood care in urban Malaysia has raised concerns regarding the quality of infant-toddler learning environments. Although policy developments have taken place, there remains a lack of standardized assessment tools to evaluate environmental quality in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centres. Aim : This study aims to address this critical gap by evaluating the quality of two childcare centres in Kuala Lumpur using the Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale-Revised (ITERS-R). Method : This research employed a qualitative case study design, with data gathered through structured observations and semi-structured interviews to assess both structural and process quality aspects. Result : The findings revealed that both centres provided only minimal to moderate levels of quality, with Nursery A achieving a mean score of 3.52 and Nursery B scoring 2.86. Notable strengths included language interactions and spatial arrangements. However, significant shortcomings were identified in hygiene practices, caregiver consistency, and inclusivity. Conclusion : These results underscore the importance of adapting and contextualizing international instruments such as the ITERS-R to align with Malaysia’s cultural and regulatory frameworks. The study contributes localized insights that can inform quality improvement initiatives in urban ECCE settings throughout the country.

Abstract

Background: Early childhood education (ages 3–6 years) is known as a golden developmental period that requires appropriate stimulation to optimize all developmental domains, including gross motor skills. Observations conducted at TK Mololisan Rano Balaesang Tanjung revealed that children’s gross motor abilities had not yet developed as expected, as indicated by weak balance, strength, and agility due to limited physical activity. One potentially effective solution is the use of traditional physical play, such as jump-rope games, which stimulate gross motor performance. Objective: This study aims to examine the influence of jump-rope play activities on the gross motor skills of children in Group A. Method: This research employed a quantitative descriptive design. The study involved 10 children (3 boys and 7 girls) who participated in the program for three weeks. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential testing with a t-test. Results: The findings indicate that jump-rope play had a significant effect on improving children’s gross motor abilities, particularly in the aspects of balance, agility, and coordination. Conclusion: Jump-rope activities may serve as an enjoyable learning medium that effectively supports the development of gross motor skills in early childhood.

Abstract

Background: Father involvement in early childhood care remains low because fathers' roles are generally limited to financial aspects, resulting in suboptimal emotional, social, and cognitive stimulation for children. Objective: This study aims to identify forms of father involvement, factors that influence it, and its impact on child development through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Methods: Articles were collected from the Google Scholar database using Publish or Perish for the period 2020–2025, resulting in 52 initial articles, which were then selected based on inclusion criteria (factors and impacts of father involvement in early childhood care) and exclusion criteria (not discussing early childhood education or not involving fathers), leaving 10 relevant articles for analysis.  Result: The most dominant positive impacts of father involvement were on cognitive development (41.7%), social-emotional development (33.3%), and moral and self-identity formation (25%). The uniqueness of this study lies in its comprehensive mapping of father involvement in a multidimensional manner (physical-emotional-cognitive) and its quantitative relationship with the holistic development of children in the Indonesian cultural context. Conclusion: Overall, the SLR results emphasize the need to strengthen policies and programs for collaborative father-mother parenting to improve the quality of early childhood care and development.

Abstract

Background: The formation of polite and respectful character in early childhood requires continuous support from both schools and families. In practice, some children still do not demonstrate respectful attitudes toward teachers and peers, indicating a lack of consistency between habituation practices at school and their application at home. Objective: This study aims to describe the consistency of teachers and parents in shaping children’s polite character at RA Roudlotul Ulum Baluk. Specifically, the study analyzes the alignment of character-building practices related to politeness between teachers and parents within the context of a village-based Islamic early childhood education institution. Method: This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving seven informants, consisting of the head of the RA, one teacher from Class A, one teacher from Class B, and four parents of students at RA Roudlotul Ulum Baluk. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Results: The findings indicate that: 1) Teachers consistently implement politeness habituation through greetings, queuing practices, and the use of polite language at school. 2) Some parents apply similar practices at home; however, these practices are not carried out consistently. 3) Inconsistencies in habituation at home make it difficult for some children to maintain polite behavior when they are at school. Conclusion: The development of polite character at RA Roudlotul Ulum Baluk can be achieved effectively through the alignment of habituation practices between school and family. Consistent practices implemented by teachers and reinforced by parents play a crucial role in the learning process, enabling children to sustain polite behavior continuously from an early age.

Abstract

Background: The development of self-identity in early childhood is a crucial aspect that forms the foundation for self-confidence, independence, and social competence. Children with a well-developed self-identity tend to recognize themselves, understand their roles, and demonstrate positive behaviors in everyday interactions. Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of Senam Ceria (Joyful Exercise) on the development of self-identity among children aged 5–6 years. Method: The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 18 children from Group B as research participants. The observation instrument used in this study was validated by experts and demonstrated high reliability, with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.87. Over a three-week period, the children participated in six sessions of Senam Ceria, which were designed to stimulate self-expression, cooperation, and social awareness. Result: The analysis revealed a significant improvement in self-identity scores, increasing from a mean score of 7.61 before the intervention to 8.94 after the intervention. The paired t-test results indicated that the calculated t-value (4.761) exceeded the critical t-value (1.73961), with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that Senam Ceria had a statistically significant effect on children’s self-identity development. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on Senam Ceria, which has traditionally been used to enhance motor skills, but in this research is utilized as a medium for stimulating self-identity. These findings confirm that creative physical activities not only promote physical health but also effectively foster self-awareness, responsibility, and social behavior in children. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study provides an important contribution to early childhood education by demonstrating that Senam Ceria can be integrated as a learning strategy that supports the holistic development of children’s self-identity.
