Abstract

The development of information and communication technology has changed how people, especially adolescents and university students, access information, communicate, and express themselves. Social media has become a primary platform widely used by students for entertainment, information, and communication. This study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to examine the influence of social media on the learning motivation of students at a private university in Manado in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through interviews with 30 active students who regularly use social media, supported by a literature review. The results show that WhatsApp, TikTok, and Instagram are the most frequently used platforms, mainly for entertainment, information, and communication purposes. In addition, social media has been shown to support learning motivation through educational content, social interaction, and digital rewards, although the duration of use needs to be managed to prevent health problems and addiction. In conclusion, social media not only facilitates communication and access to information but also serves as an effective tool to support the learning process, stimulate curiosity, and enhance students’ motivation to learn in the digital era.

Abstract

Science education in elementary schools still tends to be theoretical and has not optimally utilized the environment as a learning resource. This study aims to describe the implementation of eco-literacy-based science education through the cultivation of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA), analyze its effectiveness in fostering students' science literacy, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors for its implementation at MI NU Tarbiyatul Banat. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study method through observations, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that eco-literacy-based science education through TOGA cultivation can be effectively and contextually implemented. Students' science literacy develops across context, knowledge, competencies, and attitudes. Supporting factors include student motivation, active involvement, and teachers' roles, while inhibiting factors include time constraints, weather conditions, and plant maintenance. Eco-literacy-based learning has the potential to be a sustainable alternative for science education.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of parenting styles on fifth-grade students’ cognitive achievement in mathematics at MI Nurul Huda 02 Keturen. Mathematics, as a fundamental discipline requiring logical and analytical thinking, often presents learning challenges due to its abstract and hierarchical nature. Previous studies highlight the role of family environment in shaping students’ academic outcomes; however, inconsistencies remain between theoretical expectations and actual parental involvement in supporting children’s learning at home. This quantitative ex-post facto research involved 41 students selected through saturated sampling. Data were collected using a validated Likert-scale questionnaire to measure parenting styles (authoritarian, democratic, and permissive) and documentation of students’ semester mathematics scores. Data analysis included normality and linearity tests, followed by multiple linear regression and coefficient of determination analysis using SPSS. The results indicate that parenting styles simultaneously contribute 26.8% to the variance in students’ mathematics achievement (R² = 0.268; R = 0.518). Democratic parenting shows the strongest positive and significant influence (β = 1.329), while authoritarian parenting has a significant negative effect (β = -1.275). Permissive parenting demonstrates a positive but non-significant effect. These findings confirm that parenting style is a significant external factor influencing mathematics learning outcomes, although other factors account for 73.2% of the variance. Strengthening collaboration between parents and schools is therefore essential to optimize students’ academic performance.

Abstract

Science education at the elementary level plays a crucial role in developing students' scientific literacy, scientific attitudes, and thinking skills from an early age. With the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, science education is required to not only prioritise material assignments, but also deep conceptual understanding through meaningful learning experiences. The deep learning approach is relevant because it encourages students to actively construct knowledge, connect concepts to everyday contexts, and improve critical thinking skills. This study aims to analyse the science learning process using a deep learning approach for upper-grade students in primary school. This study applies a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects include teachers and upper-grade students in primary school. Information was collected through observation of the learning process, interviews with teachers, and documentation of teaching tools and learning activities. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that science teaching has led to the application of deep learning through discussion, simple practices, the use of learning media, and the connection of material with the real experiences of students. However, the implementation of deep learning has not been fully maximised due to obstacles such as limited learning time, variations in student characteristics, and teachers' readiness in developing deep learning-based lessons. It is hoped that this study will provide food for thought for teachers in improving science education to be more relevant and in line with the needs of the Merdeka Curriculum.
