Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of using learning media that can improve students’ involvement and practical skills in vocational learning. This study aimed to examine the implementation of video editing as a learning medium in vocational subjects for Grade XI students at SMK TV Watampone and to identify the teacher’s efforts in guiding students during the learning process. This study employed a qualitative approach and was conducted at SMK TV Watampone, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. The study was based on the Learning by Doing and David Kolb’s Experiential Learning theories, which emphasize learning through direct experience and practice. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving five students and one vocational subject teacher. The results showed that the use of video editing as a learning medium improved students’ involvement, creativity, practical skills, and understanding of vocational materials. The use of the CapCut application helped students learn directly through video production and editing activities. The teacher acted as a facilitator by providing guidance in using the application, developing video concepts, and solving technical problems. Therefore, the implementation of video editing provided a more engaging learning experience and supported the improvement of students’ practical skills and active participation in vocational learning. Abstract

Language contact is a common sociolinguistic phenomenon in bilingual communities, including students who use regional and Indonesian languages interchangeably in daily communication. This study aims to describe the forms of language contact found in the utterances of students at MTs Al-Muttaqin Sungai Ungar. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, audio recording, note-taking, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of students of MTs Al-Muttaqin Sungai Ungar selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students experience bilingualism, with Malay functioning as the first language and Indonesian as the second language used in formal communication. This bilingual condition gives rise to language contact phenomena in the form of code switching and code mixing during classroom and non-classroom interactions. Code switching occurs when students change language according to the interlocutor or communication context, whereas code mixing appears through the insertion of Malay lexical elements into Indonesian utterances. These findings indicate that language contact among students is influenced by bilingual competence and the sociolinguistic environment in which they interact. The study contributes to the understanding of language contact phenomena among junior high school students in bilingual communities.

Abstract

Gadget use among adolescents continues to increase alongside the development of digital technology, and excessive use is thought to affect psychological well-being, including increasing anxiety levels. This study aimed to determine the relationship between gadget usage duration and anxiety levels among vocational high school adolescents in North Jakarta. This study used a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 180 tenth- and eleventh-grade students at a vocational high school in North Jakarta, with a sample of 138 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a gadget usage duration questionnaire and the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (Z-SAS), then analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Spearman Rank correlation test at a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a moderate duration of gadget use (50.7%), while the majority were in the non-anxious category (68.1%). The Spearman Rank test showed a correlation coefficient of r = -0.057 with a p-value of 0.503 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant relationship between gadget usage duration and anxiety levels among vocational high school adolescents in North Jakarta, with a negative direction and a very weak correlation strength. It is concluded that gadget usage duration is not the sole factor influencing adolescent anxiety, so other factors such as self-control, sleep quality, academic pressure, and social support should also be considered. Although not statistically significant, gadget use still needs to be monitored to prevent negative impacts on adolescents' physical and psychological health.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the tendency of history learning to rely on conventional teaching methods that provide limited opportunities for students to participate actively in the learning process. Therefore, the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model was selected as an alternative instructional strategy to create a more active, engaging, and enjoyable learning environment through the Open The Box educational game supported by Wordwall. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and triangulation. The research participants consisted of a history teacher and students of Class X E6. The implementation of the learning model involved lesson planning, teacher presentation of learning materials, group formation, presentation of the Open The Box game by the teacher, students' participation in the tournament, and the provision of group rewards. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) model using the Open The Box game successfully encouraged students to participate actively in classroom activities, express their opinions confidently, answer questions, and collaboratively discuss challenges presented in the game. However, several challenges were identified, including the presence of students who remained passive and had difficulty maintaining focus, indicating the need for more effective classroom time management and group organization. Overall, the integration of the Teams Games Tournament model with the Open The Box educational game successfully created an interactive, engaging, and enjoyable learning environment that effectively supported the achievement of history learning objectives.

Abstract

Intra-Muslim social conflict is still an ongoing problem in the midst of community life, characterized by the gap between tolerance that appears on the surface and the low ability to solve problems substantively. Departing from this condition, this study attempts to uncover the hidden meaning behind the representation of tolerance in the film My Name Is Khan (2010). This study aims to: (1) identify and analyze the representation of educational values of tolerance among Muslims in the film My Name Is Khan through an analysis of Roland Barthes's semiotic system which includes denotation, connotation, and myth; and (2) reveal and explain the manifestation of educational values of tolerance among Muslims contained in the film. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a library research type. Data collection techniques are carried out through non-participant observation and documentation. The data processing and analysis techniques use content analysis combined with Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis, with the analysis units being scenes, scenes, narratives, and symbols contained in the film. The results of the study show that from the 5 scenes selected based on their relevance to the values of tolerance education among Muslims, five classifications of values were found, namely: (1) Strong Family Establishment, (2) Strong Establishment, and (3) Solidarity. These findings indicate that the film My Name Is Khan significantly represents the values of tolerance education that can be used as a learning medium in building awareness and strengthening brotherhood amidst the dynamics of Muslim life. Abstract

Islamic history classes can easily slide into one-way lecturing, and that was largely the case in Class X.2 at MAN 1 Kota Makassar, where students absorbed material passively rather than questioning it reflected in pre-cycle scores averaging just 68.33, with only 36.1% of the 36 students meeting the minimum mastery criterion. This study examined how the Question Student Have model, in which students write down their own questions rather than wait to be asked, could be applied to Islamic Cultural History instruction and whether doing so would raise learning outcomes. Framed as classroom action research across two cycles, it drew on 36 Grade X students together with their subject teacher, gathering data through observation, semi-structured interviews, achievement tests, and documentation, then analyzing the results descriptively via mean scores and mastery percentages. Once the model was introduced, engagement and results moved together: the class average rose to 79.86 with 61.1% mastery after Cycle I, then reached 90.55 with 86.1% mastery by Cycle II comfortably clearing the study's success benchmarks. The findings suggest that letting students set the questions, rather than only answer them, is a workable way to lift both participation and achievement in Islamic Cultural History classrooms

Abstract

Social reality serves as an inspiration for the creation of literary works while also revealing the meaning of every event that occurs. Novel is a form of literary work that reveals the social reality of society as constructed by the author, one aspect of which is the imbalance of power. Novel Gerhana Merah by Muhammad Sholihin depicts the ethnic tensions of the Minangkabau people resulting from foreign colonization during the colonial era. This study aims to explain the representation of hegemonic power in the novel Gerhana Merah by Muhammad Sholihin. It also aims to explain the representation of humanist values in the novel. The representation of hegemonic power was analyzed using Gramsci's theory of hegemony, while data on humanist values were obtained using Freire's theory. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through reading and note-taking techniques applied to dialogues and narratives containing elements of hegemonic power and humanist values. Furthermore, the data analysis technique involved three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the analysis show that, based on Gramsci's theory, there are nine forms of hegemonic power instruments manifested through language, common sense, and folklore that influence the characters in the novel. The application of Freire's theory reveals nine forms of humanist values, manifested as acts of struggle to uphold humanity in response to oppression, reflecting the characters' consciousness in the novel such as justice, solidarity, and moral resistance.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the increasing use of social media among students, which has the potential to affect their interest in learning. Based on observations and interviews conducted at State Senior High School 20 in Jakarta, it was found that some students exhibited low interest in learning; among other things, they lacked focus during class and were more interested in non-academic activities, including the use of social media. This study aims to analyze the extent to which “social media use affects learning motivation” among students at State Senior High School 20 Jakarta. A quantitative method with a descriptive-correlational approach was employed, and data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, documentation, and the distribution of a Likert-scale questionnaire to students in this study. The study population consisted of 530 11th- and 12th-grade students at State High School 20 in Jakarta, with a sample size of 84 respondents determined using the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error; the entire population was selected as the sample using purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using “Product-Moment Correlation (Pearson)” and “Simple Linear Regression”. The results of the study show that the correlation coefficient (rxy) between social media use (X) and interest in learning (Y) is 0.414, or 41.4%, which falls into the moderate or sufficient category. The results of the hypothesis test show that ro (0.414) is greater than rt at both the 5% (0.214) and 1% (0.280) significance levels; therefore, the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The coefficient of determination (R-squared) is 0.171, meaning that social media use contributes 17.1% to students’ interest in learning, while the remaining 82.9% is influenced by other factors such as teaching methods, family support, and self-motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant positive effect of “social media use on learning interest” among students at SMA Negeri 20 Jakarta, although the effect is classified as moderate.
