Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has created new opportunities for science learning in primary schools, particularly in fostering students’ critical thinking skills. However, science education at the elementary level is still often dominated by conventional methods that emphasize rote memorization, leaving students with limited opportunities to develop analytical and reflective abilities. This study aims to examine the potential of integrating the Discovery Learning (DL) model with Virtual Reality (VR) technology to enhance critical thinking skills in science learning. The methodology employed is a literature review involving a systematic analysis of articles, research reports, and academic publications related to DL, VR, and science education. The review focuses on identifying contributions, advantages, and limitations of applying VR within the context of primary education. Findings indicate that the integration of DL with VR has the potential to provide immersive, interactive, and contextual learning experiences, encouraging students to observe, ask questions, and evaluate information critically. While VR enables the tangible exploration of abstract scientific concepts, DL facilitates inquiry and independent discovery processes. Nevertheless, its implementation faces challenges such as limited infrastructure, the need for teacher training, and the relatively high cost of technological devices. Overall, this review highlights that the use of VR within a DL framework can serve as an innovative strategy to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills. Recommendations are directed at teachers to begin exploring technological integration, policymakers to support the provision of facilities, and researchers to further investigate its effectiveness through empirical studies in primary school settings

Abstract

The development of digital technology requires digital literacy skills to be introduced from elementary education. However, students’ ability to utilize learning technology still varies, both in terms of skills and digital ethics. This study aims to analyze the digital literacy skills of fifth-grade students through the use of flipbook media in the IPAS subject “Bumiku Sayang, Bumiku Malang”. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving the subject teacher and fifth-grade students at SDN Tanjung Jati 2. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews with the teacher, and in-depth interviews with three students representing different ability levels. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that most students demonstrated adequate digital skills, as shown by their ability to access and use the flipbook independently. However, digital ethics were not yet consistent, as some students opened other applications during the lesson. The use of flipbooks was proven to enhance students’ motivation and understanding, particularly regarding the concept of earthquakes. This study highlights the important role of teachers as facilitators who not only guide technical skills but also instill responsibility in digital technology usage.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology in education require students to have adequate digital literacy skills to optimize the use of interactive multimedia in learning. However, not all elementary school students have optimal digital literacy skills, especially in rural areas such as Bangkalan Regency. This study aims to analyze the digital literacy skills of fifth-grade students at Tanjung Jati 2 Elementary School in Bangkalan in the use of interactive multimedia in the material “My Beloved Earth, My Poor Earth.” This study uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques include semi-structured interviews with teachers, observation of students' digital literacy skills, student response questionnaires, and interactive quizzes. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman model with the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research subjects consisted of fifth-grade teachers and 17 students. The results showed that 11 of the 17 students (64.7%) had mastered digital literacy skills at the maximum level in terms of opening applications, navigating pages, selecting interactive elements, and participating in quizzes. Students showed high enthusiasm for learning using interactive multimedia. However, the effectiveness of interactive multimedia in improving material comprehension was still less than optimal due to inappropriate implementation strategies, where Chromebook access was provided too early, thereby disrupting students' concentration during material explanations.
