Abstract

This study aims to describe the challenges of the Civil Society Assembly for Peace (CAP) in strengthening civil Society in realizing Peace in southern Thailand. The method used in this research is descriptive-analytic qualitative. This study uses two sources of data, particularly primary data obtained through interviews with informants related to the problem under study and secondary data from documents, books, articles, journals, and other sources to support this research. The results showed that the purpose of the Civil Society Assembly for Peace (CAP) to unite the direction of the struggle of community organizations in realizing Peace in Southern Thailand has led to significant results. This has been proven since it was founded in 2020; as many as 27 civil society organizations have joined the civil society assembly for Peace (CAP). This Organization has received full support from various elements of the minority Muslim community in Southern Thailand. On the other hand, the Thai government considers this Organization a threat that can disrupt national political stability. Various endeavors to confine the movement of this Organization were accomplished by the Thai government in multiple ways, both in the form of physical (arrest) and non-physical actions (limiting cooperation with various organizations outside Thailand).

Abstract

Abstract

The Ottoman Dynasty was one of the largest forms of Islamic government in history. This study aims to investigate and understand the comparison between the concept of the caliphate in the Ottoman Dynasty, one of the largest Islamic empires in history, and the form of a modern state with democracy, namely the State of Indonesia. This study uses comparative historical analysis, taken from primary sources, historical records, and scientific literature to trace the evolution of governance in the Ottoman Dynasty and the State of Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that there is no standard form of state practice in Islam. The monarchy system in the form of a caliphate state used by the Ottomans is in line with that conveyed by Ibn Abi Rabi who supports a monarchical form of government. The democratic system in the form of a republican state implemented in Indonesia is identical to the concept of Imamah conveyed by al-Mawardi. Any idea or formulation about state practice is permitted in Islam as long as it does not deviate from the references to the Qur'an and Hadith.

Abstract

Abstract Western Sahara has been a contested area between Morocco and a liberation movement called the Polisario Front for decades. Post 2020, there are growing numbers of countries who recognize, and are in favor of Moroccan efforts to maintain sovereignty, in addition to territorial integrity over the Western Sahara. Morocco continues to strengthen its Autonomy Plan by taking several approaches so that external legitimacy can be achieved. This paper aims to analyze the current efforts of the Moroccan government; that is their approach to attain international recognition for external legitimacy and territorial integrity over the Western Sahara. The research method is Qualitative-Descriptive, with data gathering technique being Library Research. Analysis in this paper is based on the Diplomacy and National Interest theories. The result indicates that the current approach of the Moroccan government is getting assertive: tit-for-tat normalization of relations, leverage politics with foreign countries, and expanding tangible presence in the Western Sahara through diplomatic building establishments, as well as setting up international cooperations. These efforts indicate the growing urgency of the Western Sahara for Morocco, and also its non-wavering resolve to protect territorial integrity.

Abstract

This article delves into the historical debates between two prominent figures, Hamzah Fansuri, and Nuruddin Arraniry, in the context of Islamic civilization in Aceh. While existing literature recognizes this significant event as the genesis of enduring Islamic thought in Aceh, a crucial aspect remains underexplored - the analysis through the lens of power/knowledge theory by Michel Foucault. Consequently, this article aims to fill this scholarly gap by employing a political knowledge approach to reexamine the conflict between these two intellectuals. By focusing on the motives of power in Nuruddin Arraniry's accusations of heresy against Hamzah Fansuri and considering the prevailing political landscape, the article argues that the charges were primarily driven by a quest for influence within the Aceh sultanate. This perspective leads to the conclusion that the knowledge conflict between Hamzah Fansuri and Nuruddin Arraniry stemmed from the underlying tension between Sufism and fiqh, calling for a reevaluation of their ideological divergence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between Islam and the state in Saudi Arabia and Iran, using the approach of post-Islamism. Post-Islamism is a concept that refers to the shift of Islamist groups towards modernity and democracy. It was first introduced by Iranian intellectual, Asef Bayat, in the 1990s. Since then, it has been used to analyze the phenomenon of political Islam in different countries, especially after the Cold War. In Saudi Arabia, changes have occurred since Mohammed bin Salman was appointed as crown prince in 2016. In Iran, civil society actions, such as the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, have driven the change. The research problem is to compare the post-Islamism model that occurs in Saudi Arabia and Iran. The comparative case study method with library research techniques was used. The research findings show that the pattern of post-Islamism in Saudi Arabia differs from that of Iran. In Saudi Arabia, post-Islamism is top-down, starting from state politics without civic movement. However, Iran illustrates the opposite - it is bottom-up and initiated by civil society against the state.
