Abstract

A study to compare the back fat thickness, rib eye muscle area, and body condition score (BCS) of young thin-tailed lambs fed various levels of carica Dieng seeds in rations. Eighteen male lambs aged 3-4 months with an initial body weight of 10.68 ± 1.30 kg were applied three feeding treatments (T) following a completely randomized design, T1 = complete feed containing 5% carica seeds, T2 = complete feed containing 12.5% carica seeds, and T3 = complete feed containing 20% carica seeds, with six replications each.  At the end of 14 weeks of feeding treatment, back fat thickness and rib eye muscle area were measured using the Digital Veterinary Ultrasound Imaging System CTS-800. Yield grade value was determined using back fat thickness data, while the BCS assessment was carried out visually. The results showed that various levels of carica seeds addition to complete feed did not produce significant differences (P>0.05) in all variables measured. Back fat thickness, BCS, and rib eye muscle area in young thin-tailed sheep were  1.46 mm, 3.06, and 15.52 cm2, respectively. It might be concluded that supplementation of carica Dieng seeds up to 20% in the complete feed can still be utilized by young thin-tailed sheep.

Abstract

The research aimed to examine the effect of vitamin A and magnesium supplementation on protein consumption and nitrogen retention in sheep was carried out on February 29 - June 26 2023. The material used was 18 local male sheep aged 7 - 8 months with a weight of 17,12 ±1,94 kg were reared for 2 months in individual stage model cages. The basal feed given is concentrate (75%) and ammoniated rice straw (25%). The in vivo experimental method uses a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) as a group, namely the initial weight of the research sheep, consisting of 6 groups that act as repeaters. Treatments tested T1 = Ammoniated rice straw (25%) + concentrate feed (75%); T2 = T1 + vitamin A (2000 IU); T3 = T2 + magnesium mineral (1 gram). The variables measured were protein consumption and nitrogen retention. The data obtained was then analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) which was further tested with the Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test. Protein consumption was significantly influenced by treatment (P<0.05) with a mean of 101.71 ± 3.85 grams/head/day (T1), 109.03 ± 8.60 grams/head/day (T2), and 115.99 ± 5.35 grams/head/day (T3). Likewise, nitrogen retention was significantly influenced by treatment (T<0.05) with an average of 9.37 ± 1.41 grams/head/day (T1), 9.81 ± 1.51 grams/head/day (T2), 10.21 ± 1.53 grams/head/day (T3). The HSD test results showed that the protein consumption and nitrogen retention of T3 sheep were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those of T1 and T2. The research conclusion was that supplementation of vitamin A and magnesium (T3) in basal feed was able to increase protein consumption by 12.31% and nitrogen retention by 8.24% in sheep when compared to the control treatment (T1).

Abstract

Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots are decomposing agents cultivated to convert organic materials. Both on-farm and off-farm livestock waste, as well as kitchen organic waste, are organic materials. Organic waste and its by-products can be degraded by BSF maggots into biomass rich in protein, which can be used as feed. This study aims to evaluate the effects of formulating dairy cow feces, milk sediment, and kitchen organic waste (KOW) as growth media on the population density, weight, and length of BSF maggots. The research method used is experimental with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) involving four treatments and five replicates. The treatments include 100% KOW (P0), 50% KOW and 50% dairy cow feces (P1), 50% KOW and 50% milk sediment (P2), and 33.33% KOW, 33.33% dairy cow feces, and 33.33% milk sediment (P3). BSF maggot rearing was carried out for 20 days, from BSF eggs to the prepupa stage. The conclusion of this study was that the P2 formulation (dairy cow feces and kitchen organic waste) could increase the population density of BSF maggots, and the P3 formulation (dairy cow feces, milk sediment, and kitchen organic waste) could increase the weight and length of BSF maggots.

Abstract

The balance of nutrients in the diet is essential for optimal bird performance. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the growth response of broilers fed different basal diets supplemented with enzymes.  A total of 250 day-old chicks (Cobbs, mixed sex) were used in this experiment. The experiment was designed using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 5 replications (10 birds/pen). The treatments were as follows: P0 = control diets, P0= Control diets, P1= Low crude protein diets (PK) P2= Low crude protein diets supplemented with protease; P3= Low phosphor diets; P4= Low phosphor diets supplemented with fitase. The results of statistical analysis showed that treatment had a significant effect (P<0.05) on feed intake, body weight gain (BWG), and feed conversion ratio(FCR) of broiler chickens aged 3 weeks. The conclusion of this study was that the addition of protease in a low-protein diet enhances feed intake, body weight gain, and feed efficiency in starter phase broilers. Conversely, the addition of phytase in a low-phosphorus and low-protein diet does not improve the growth performance of starter phase broilers.
