Abstract

This study investigates violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principle and the particularized conversational implicatures they generate in the anime Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (season one). Focusing on dialogues between Maple and Sally, twelve episodes were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach and a listen-and-record technique. The findings indicate that violations of the maxims of quantity, quality, relation, and manner are employed strategically, producing implicatures such as sarcasm, refusal, concern, and evasion. These implicatures contribute to character development and relational dynamics, reflecting the indirectness and affective stance characteristic of Japanese discourse. By mapping specific maxim violations to their corresponding implicatures, the study offers a nuanced understanding of pragmatic mechanisms in fictional interaction and narrative communication.

Abstract

Various popular Japanese culture products available online are widely believed to support the acquisition of Japanese language proficiency. However, this potential is not always equally realized in learning practices. This study aims to analyse how the process of capital conversion occurs among students who are fans of Japanese popular culture in the arena of Japanese language learning in higher education. The research was conducted using qualitative research methods, with a narrative research approach, within the framework of Bourdieu’s theory, particularly as it relates to fields, capital, and habitus. The research informants were four students from the Japanese language studies program. The results of the research indicate that interaction with Japanese popular culture can accumulate valuable Japanese language skills in the Japanese language learning arena, but this process does not occur automatically. The success of conversion depends on the interaction between habitus, the configuration of initial capital, and reflexivity, through which students adjust their practices in response to the dominant rules and dynamics of the field.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of language as a strategy for cultural identity preservation amid environmental crisis in Tawada Yoko's dystopian novel Chikyu ni Chiribamerarete (2021). Using an ecocritical framework from Cheryll Glotfelty and Lawrence Buell, alongside Tawada's concept of exophony and Jan Assmann's cultural memory theory, this research applies close reading and hermeneutic interpretation to analyze the protagonist Hiruko's responses to the extinction of Japan due to environmental catastrophe. The findings reveal that environmental destruction triggers not only physical collapse but also the disintegration of language and cultural identity, turning Hiruko into a linguistic refugee. In response, Hiruko employs three strategies: creating a homemade language (Pan-Ska) as exophonic resistance, preserving Japanese mythology through Kamishibai storytelling, and using nostalgic vocabulary to reconstruct emotional bonds with a lost homeland. This study concludes that language serves as the final vessel of place attachment and cultural continuity, and that emotional ties to a place persist even after its physical extinction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the internalization of Bushido values as a foundation for strengthening the character of STIPRAM students in the first and second semesters of the 2025/2026 academic year, in facing academic challenges and preparing for an international internship in Japan. In the era of globalization, students often face transitional obstacles such as procrastination, academic stress, and a crisis of integrity. Using a qualitative case study design approach, primary data was collected through in-depth interviews and passive participant observation to capture the manifestations of student behavior based on Inazo Nitobe's eight pillars of Bushido. The results show that the seven basic principles (Gi to Chugi) form a moral framework for academic honesty and dedication, while the principle of Jisei (self-control) is crucial for time management and mental resilience. Although the era of the samurai has ended, the philosophy of Bushido remains relevant as a "starlight" that illuminates the path of students' professionalism. This study concludes that adapting the Japanese work ethic through Bushido values can increase the competitiveness and maturity of STIPRAM students in navigating the dynamics of a competitive global workplace.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how high school pupils are currently learning Japanese. to assess students' speaking skills in the high school Japanese language learning process by using the shadowing method, which is facilitated by the Educaplay platform. In an attempt to enhance students' Japanese speaking skills, this study starts with the crucial role that educators play in putting the Educaplay platform-based shadowing approach into practice. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology. Data collection was undertaken through semi-structured interviews with eleven Japanese language teachers recruited using a purposive sampling technique. Thematic analysis was then used to examine the interview data in order to find recurring themes and important concepts in the participants' answers. According to the study's findings, the majority of teachers thought that using the shadowing technique, which is backed by Educaplay, will help students become more proficient speakers of Japanese.  Eleven Japanese language instructors completed a questionnaire, and the results indicated that the shadowing approach is essential for improving students' speaking abilities. The findings of this study suggest that using Educaplay in conjunction with the shadowing method could be a useful strategy for enhancing students' speaking abilities when studying Japanese. The findings of this study suggest that using Educaplay in conjunction with the shadowing method could be a useful strategy for enhancing students' speaking abilities when studying Japanese. In order to maximize the use of Educaplay, it is crucial to choose learning strategies and media that are in line with the curriculum, for teachers to play a role in their selection and execution that is in line with the needs of the students, and for schools to have institutional support.

Abstract

This animated movie, titled Heisei Gassen Tanuki Pon Poko, tells the story of tanuki (raccoons) in the Tama area, a suburb of Tokyo. At first, they lived peacefully until the habitat where they lived was threatened by a massive housing development project. This research aims to investigate the changes the tanuki’s habitat due to neighbourhood modernization. The process of habitat change will be examined using Todorov's narrative model. This research uses qualitative methods, also uses narrative analysis. The results of the data analysis revealed a change of the tanuki habit due to modernization in their environment. After their habitat transformed into an urban area, the tanuki also changed in their lifestyle due to the impact of modernization on their habitat. Todorov's narrative, used in this paper, illustrates how the transition from the initial stage to the final stage necessitates the tanuki's adaptation to the new environment.

Abstract

Language variations are being affected by various factors. One of the factors is the field of use (Chaer & Agustina, 2004). Register is an example of language variations that are affected by the field of use. In the Kamen Rider fandom, particularly in fan activities related to Kamen Rider toys, reviewers use specific words or terms when discussing or talking about toy products. This paper is a qualitative descriptive research on the sociolinguistic study that aims to explain the word formation, the word meaning, and the function of registers used in Kamen Rider-themed toy review videos. The data were taken from four review videos from a YouTube channel named Reon Channeru. This research found that the registers used in the video consist only of nouns, the meanings can be classified into eight groups, and the registers has several functions, which are conveying information, explaining the toy features, shortening speech, distinguishing from other groups, and constructing Kamen Rider fan identity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse how educational paradigms influence Japanese language learning. Recent studies in Japanese language education indicate a shift from structural approaches toward communicative, contextual, and learner-centered learning. In Indonesia, empirical studies have also demonstrated the effectiveness of specific learning media in improving Japanese language outcomes, such as vocabulary mastery. However, most existing research focuses on instructional techniques or media effectiveness, with limited attention to the educational paradigms underlying teachers’ pedagogical decisions. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through an objective questionnaire administered to ten Japanese language teachers. The data were analyzed by mapping teachers’ responses to five educational paradigms: behavioristic, cognitivistic, constructivistic, humanistic, and sociocultural. The findings reveal that teachers conceptually favor communicative and constructivistic paradigms, particularly in defining learning goals and success indicators. Nevertheless, instructional practices and assessment methods remain largely influenced by cognitivistic and behavioristic paradigms. This discrepancy suggests that paradigm transformation in Japanese language education remains partial and transitional. This study contributes to Japanese language pedagogy by positioning educational paradigms as a philosophical framework connecting learning objectives, classroom practices, assessment, and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Kyushoku has long been recognized as a structured and successful school lunch program supporting nutrition education and child well-being in Japan. However, Kyushoku has recently faced various challenges amidst emerging global issues. This study aims to analyze the current implementation challenges of the Kyushoku program to provide developing countries with an understanding that this ideal program still requires improvement and targeted government intervention. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method, through the analysis of credible data such as Japanese government policy documents, official survey reports, books, recent Japanese media reports, and relevant academic literature articles. The results reveal several key challenges in Kyushoku's implementation, such as food price inflation making it difficult for local governments to provide food that meets nutritional standards, inter-regional Inequality, food safety issues, and demographic decline in Japan. The study's findings suggest that the sustainability of the Kyushoku program depends on adaptive policy support, stable financial management, and stronger coordination among the government, schools, and related sectors. This study is expected to provide a critical perspective on the evolving reality of the Kyushoku program in modern Japanese society.
