Abstract

Despite extensive research on parenting styles and student discipline, empirical studies that explicitly examine gender-based differences in this relationship remain limited, particularly at the junior secondary school level in Indonesia. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the relationship between parenting styles and student discipline when viewed from the child’s gender, thereby offering a more nuanced understanding of parental influence in character development. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 212 ninth-grade students of SMP Al-Ma’soem in the 2025–2026 academic year, consisting of 124 male students and 88 female students. Data were collected using validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaires measuring parenting styles and student discipline. Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between parenting styles and discipline among male students (ρ = 0.177; p = 0.049), although the strength of the relationship was very low. In contrast, no significant relationship was found among female students (ρ = 0.024; p = 0.826). These findings highlight gender-specific patterns in the association between parenting styles and student discipline, suggesting that parental influence tends to be more salient for male students, while female students’ discipline may be shaped more strongly by internal regulation and broader environmental factors. The study contributes theoretically to guidance and counseling literature by emphasizing the importance of incorporating gender perspectives in parental involvement strategies aimed at fostering student discipline.

Abstract

Early adulthood (ages 18–40) is a period vulnerable to high stress and quarter-life crisis, with the prevalence of emotional mental disorders in Makassar reaching 17.86% (higher than the national average of 9.8%). This study aims to examine the influence of self-esteem and emotion regulation on the tendency of 4F coping mechanisms (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) in early adults with high stress in Makassar City. Using a quantitative approach with a multinomial logistic regression design, the study involved 229 early adult respondents aged 18–40 years who had high stress levels based on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Research instruments consisted of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and the Fight-Flight-Freeze-Fawn Test. Results showed the majority of respondents had moderate self-esteem (40.2%) and moderate emotion regulation (49.3%), with the freeze coping tendency being most dominant (41.9%). Regression analysis revealed emotion regulation had a significant influence on the 4F coping mechanism (p=0.001), while self-esteem was not significant (p=0.648). The combined contribution of both variables was 52.9% (R²=0.529), leaving 47.1% influenced by factors outside the model. The study concludes that emotion regulation ability is a critical factor in determining the tendency towards 4F coping mechanisms in this population, while self-esteem did not show a direct influence. These findings confirm the importance of interventions focused on strengthening emotion regulation to reduce maladaptive responses to high stress in early adults within urban contexts like Makassar

Abstract

Decision-making skills are essential life skills that need to be developed from an early age, as they contribute to children’s independence, self-confidence, and critical thinking abilities. The development of these skills is strongly influenced by parenting styles, particularly strict parents or authoritarian parenting, which is characterized by high control and limited child participation. This study aims to comprehensively examine children’s decision-making skills from the perspective of strict parents using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Relevant peer-reviewed articles published over the last ten years were systematically selected and analyzed following the PRISMA guidelines and thematic synthesis techniques. The findings indicate that authoritarian parenting tends to have a negative impact on children’s decision-making skills, particularly in terms of autonomy, emotional regulation, and self-confidence. Although parental strictness may provide behavioral structure, its positive effects are limited unless accompanied by open communication and emotional support. This study highlights the importance of balancing parental control and autonomy support to foster optimal development of children’s decision-making skills across developmental stages

Abstract

This research investigates how parental roles contribute to shaping discipline and achievement of santri (Islamic boarding school students) within a pesantren environment. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with homeroom teachers, musyrif (supervisors), 30 parents, and 30 santri at Muharrikunnajaah Islamic Education Center; direct observation; and documentation. Participants were selected via purposive sampling from diverse regional, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Data analysis employed an interactive model consisting of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with source triangulation ensuring validity. The findings reveal that parental roles significantly impact santri discipline and achievement. The pesantren facilitates this through regular monthly telephone calls, weekly letters containing progress reports and advice, and and food delivery twice a month. Of 30 santri studied, 15 who received authentic advice from parents, characterized by encouragement for worship discipline, learning motivation, and positive role modelling, demonstrated high discipline levels and superior achievement, with 15 ranking in top five of their classes and 5 winning academic and non-academic competitions. Conversely, 15 santri receiving inconsistent advice showed different outcomes: 6 received disciplinary warnings for violations, while others maintained discipline but achieved lower academic grades (70-80 versus 85-95). This research concludes that parental roles, facilitated by pesantren, are crucial in forming disciplined and achieving santri. The study contributes theoretically to understanding Islamic value transmission through families as harmonious ta'dib (Islamic education) and practically by encouraging family-pesantren collaboration to prevent moral degradation and support contemporary Islamic civilization advancement.

Abstract

Self-management and learning discipline are critical competencies that influenceacademic success, particularly in vocational education where practical andtheoretical learning demands high student autonomy. This study investigates therelationship between self-management and learning discipline among vocational highschool students. A quantitative correlational design was employed, with datacollected from 48 tenth-grade students using validated Likert-scale questionnaires.Descriptive statistical analysis indicated that students exhibited moderate to highlevels of both self-management and learning discipline. Pearson product-momentcorrelation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive relationship betweenthe two variables (r = 0.66, p < .001), indicating that students with stronger selfmanagement skills tend to demonstrate higher learning discipline. These findings underscore the importance of integrating self-management development into vocational curricula to foster disciplined learning behaviors. Educators and school administrators are encouraged to implement structured interventions that enhance students’ time management, goal setting, and self-regulation. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the role of self-management as a foundational driver of academic discipline in vocational education contexts.

Abstract

Aggressiveness among adolescents has become an increasingly complex psychosocial issue in line with the rising prevalence of online gaming addiction in the digital era. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Aggression Replacement Training (ART) in reducing aggressiveness among senior high school students with tendencies toward online gaming addiction. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed, using a mixed repeated-measures ANCOVA with online gaming addiction as a covariate. The participants consisted of 12 eleventh-grade students who exhibited high levels of aggressiveness and online gaming addiction at baseline. The results indicated that both interventions significantly reduced students’ aggressiveness from the pre-intervention phase to the post-intervention and follow-up stages. However, Motivational Interviewing demonstrated greater effectiveness than Aggression Replacement Training, as evidenced by larger, more consistent, and more sustained reductions in aggressiveness across all measurement points. In addition, a significant relationship was found between aggressiveness and online gaming addiction, underscoring the importance of controlling digital behavioral addiction when implementing psychological interventions targeting aggressive behavior. Based on these findings, the study concludes that Motivational Interviewing represents a more effective and contextually appropriate counseling approach for reducing aggressiveness associated with online gaming addiction among adolescents. This study contributes to the development of evidence-based guidance and counseling practices in school settings, particularly in addressing contemporary psychosocial challenges faced by adolescents in the digital era

Abstract

Drug abuse is a significant health and social challenge. Relapse prevention is a key aspect of the recovery process. This quantitative study aims to examine the role of coping strategies (problem-focused and emotion-focused) and self-perception of relapse risk among 215 clients undergoing rehabilitation at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. Using an explanatory approach, data were collected through a Likert scale and analyzed using moderation regression with the bootstrapping method to address the issue of data non-normality. The results of the study produced surprising findings: contrary to the theoretical framework, both types of coping strategies (problem-focused and emotion-focused) were found to have a positive and significant effect on increasing the risk of relapse. This indicates that the intensity of coping strategy use is correlated with higher relapse vulnerability. Similarly, self-perception was found to have a positive and significant effect on relapse risk, indicating that unrealistic or overly optimistic self-perceptions may be a risk factor in this population. Furthermore, self-perception was not found to significantly moderate the relationship between coping strategies and relapse risk. Overall, these findings highlight that the coping strategies and self-perception present in BNN clients are likely to be maladaptive or unsupported by practical skills, so that factors that theoretically function as protectors actually act as predictors of relapse risk.

Abstract

University students face increasing academic demands that may affect both their psychological well-being and academic success. One essential capacity that enables students to cope with such demands is academic resilience. This study aims to examine the relationship between growth mindset and academic resilience among university students and to investigate the mediating role of academic self-efficacy. A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving undergraduate students as research participants. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires measuring growth mindset, academic self-efficacy, and academic resilience, and were analyzed using regression and path analysis. The findings indicate that growth mindset is positively associated with academic self-efficacy, and academic self-efficacy is positively related to academic resilience. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy was found to significantly mediate the relationship between growth mindset and academic resilience. These results suggest that students’ academic resilience is shaped not only by their beliefs about the malleability of abilities but also by their confidence in managing academic challenges. This study highlights the importance of fostering growth mindset and academic self-efficacy to strengthen students’ academic resilience in higher education contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the meaningfulness of group counseling based on Transactional Analysis (TA) integrated with Padungku cultural values in enhancing students' social interaction skills. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design using the Hopkins model over two cycles. Participants were 10 tenth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a social interaction skills instrument, process observations, and student evaluations of counseling services. Results indicated significant improvement, with students progressively shifting from "Low" to "Very High" categories of social interaction. Observations supported the quantitative data, showing increased participation, communication, and self-control, while student evaluations revealed positive perceptions of the intervention's meaningfulness. The discussion links these changes to the ego state mechanism in TA and reinforcement of local cultural values. The study concludes that this integrative approach is meaningful in developing culturally responsive school counseling practices.
