Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of polysebaceous follicles characterized by lesions that include blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. The prevalence of acne vulgaris is most significant among adolescents aged 15 to 18. In mild and moderate acne vulgaris, topical treatment enhances skin conditions. It is believed that the ability of salicylic acid to reach the stratum corneum, which exfoliates due to its comedolytic properties, aids in the healing of acne vulgaris. Objective: Evaluate the efficacy of salicylic acid as a treatment for mild and moderate acne vulgaris. Methods: This study's design involved a literature search using the terms acne vulgaris and salicylic acid in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct. Results: The investigation found 108 articles were discovered and excluded based on the restriction criteria; 8 articles were reviewed. Salicylic acid substantially improved mild and moderate acne, according to all studies. Improvement was measured based on the lesion's severity, the lesion type, and Goodman's qualitative global scarring grading system. There is an improvement in inflammatory, non-inflammatory, and hyperpigmented lesions. Conclusion: Salicylic acid is clinically beneficial for mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Abstract

Background:  The new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly contagious disease. The disease has spread rapidly and widely around the world, and was declared as pandemic in March 2020 by WHO. The neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a biomarker that provides important information about the status of systemic inflammation, including in COVID-19. Bacterial co-infection is commonly identified in viral respiratory tract infections such as SARS-CoV-2 and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Objective: This study aims to retrospectively analyze clinical data of COVID-19 patients who were treated at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital in Surakarta, to determine the effect of NLR and bacterial co-infection with mortality and length of hospital stay of COVID-19 patients. Methods: This study is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design using secondary data from 87 adult COVID-19 patients at Dr. Moewardi Hospital in August 2021. The sampling method used was purposive sampling of all adult patients aged 18 years or above who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and hospitalized. Results: It was found that there was a strong effect of bacterial co-infection on NLR (r= 0.528). It was also found that NLR and bacterial co-infection simultaneously affected the length of hospital stay (Sig.= 0.02) and mortality (Sig.= 0.027). Partially, the effect of NLR on length of hospital stay was found (Sig.= 0.045).Conclusion: NLR and bacterial co-infection have an effect on mortality and length of hospital stay of COVID-19 patients.

Abstract

Background: Ileus occurs when there is a non-mechanical decrease or stoppage of the flow of intestinal contents. The cause of ileus has yet to be clearly defined. Various factors influence the risk for an ileus, each affecting a small part of the complex neuroimmune system. The patient will present with bloating and abdominal distension. Plain abdominal films and computed tomography (CT) scans of the abdomen are usually the first diagnostic imaging obtained. The most important principle for treating ileus is treating the underlying cause. Treating the infection, electrolyte abnormalities, and decreasing opiate use can all potentially decrease the durability of an ileus. Anesthesia procedures must be performed to treat patients preoperatively, during surgery, and postoperatively. Enhanced recovery protocols, regional anesthesia, opioid-sparing analgesics, and laparoscopy have all improved the number of postoperative ileus cases.Case Presentation: The following is a 67-year-old male patient who presents with abdominal pain with a scale of 4 out of 10, diagnosed with ileus, which was planned for laparotomy surgery by general anesthesia with supine position. Conclusion:We conclude that anesthetic procedures are critical in ileus patients in performing laparotomy operations, both in selecting anesthetic techniques, anesthetic drugs, and supporting scores (Aldrete score). Before induction, anesthesiologists must carefully assess preoperative and monitor postoperative

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is still a major health problem in the world today because the prevalence remains increasing. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, accounting for over 90% of all diabetes cases. This disease is characterized by insulin resistance, where the body cannot fully respond to insulin. As a result, glucose levels in the blood continue to increase (hyperglycemia). The main of Type 2 DM management is a healthy lifestyle. In addition, pharmacological therapy is also needed to keep blood glucose levels in diabetics under control. However, antidiabetic medicines can cause some side effects. Therefore, the development of alternative diabetes therapy has been done to minimize side effects. One of the herbal ingredients that are being studied for its potential as an anti-diabetic is noni (Morinda citrifolia L.).Objective: The aim of the study is to review and find out more about the potential of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) as an anti-diabetic.Methods: This research is included in the type of literature review. The kinds of literature are English and Indonesian language research articles related to the topic searched by using database sources from ProQuest, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The research articles were published in the last 10 years (2012 to 2022). Results: There are 14 kinds of literature that match the topic of study. A total of 12 kinds of literature are in vivo studies on animals and 2 literature studies on humans. The result shows that noni has an antidiabetic effect by lowering blood glucose levels and improving other parameters. Parts of Noni that have the potential to control Type 2 DM are fruit and leaves, which can be in the form of extracts, juices, or fermented products. Further research is needed to evaluate the toxicity, the content of active compounds, and the expression of genes related to Type 2 DM for ensuring the mechanism of noni in controlling hyperglycemia. Human studies with more respondents are also needed to confirm the findings of existing studies. Conclusion: Noni has an antidiabetic effect by lowering blood glucose levels and improving other parameters. Based on human studies, noni fruit juice can serve as a suitable addition to the diet of Type 2 DM patients.

Abstract

Background:  Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) was increasing per year. In Indonesia reached 550.000 cases per year. Ten to fifteen percent are types of CVA bleeding (CVA-B). Death and disability as complications of CVA-B are more often compared to an ischemic type. Early diagnosis of CVA-B is key to decreasing it’s complications. Unfortunately, diagnosis of early CVA-B requires excellent effort and spending more expense when using an advanced CT scan. Previous research has shown a relationship between leucocyte count and CVA, but there is no adequate data relating leukocyte count and mean arterial pressure (MAP) with bleeding volume in CVA-B patients. Objective: This study aimed to answer whether Leukocyte count combined with MAP can be a choice to diagnose CVA-B at an early stage. Methods: Analytic observational research was conducted with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study was all patients with CVA intracerebral bleeding at Ulin Hospital of Banjarmasin. The patient's medical records and CT scans were used to assess the bleeding volume. The number of leukocytes and the patient's mean arterial pressure were tabulated and analyzed to their relationship with bleeding volume. Results: In this study, there was a significant relationship between the number of leukocytes and the volume of intracerebral hemorrhage (r=0.801, p=0.000). There was no significant relationship between the MAP and the volume of intracerebral hemorrhage (r=0,17, p=0,361)Conclusion: There is a strong relationship with a significant relationship between the number of leukocytes and the volume of bleeding in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage but no relationship with MAP.

Abstract

Background:  The impact of religion and spirituality on schizophrenia patients' lives is significant yet understudied. Religion can provide hope and purpose but also lead to spiritual distress and delusions. It influences psychopathology, social integration, and treatment outcomes, serving as an effective tool in managing the illness. Objective: This review assesses the link between schizophrenia, spirituality, and religion. Methods: The study utilized electronic searches on schizo-phrenics, mental health, religion, religiosity, religious practices, and spirituality using PubMed and Google Scholar. Relevant articles were identified, including those assessing religion and caregivers of schizophrenia patients. Additionally, textbooks related to schizo-phrenia, religion, and spirituality were included. Results: Religion, faith, and spirituality intertwine as integral aspects of human experience, influencing beliefs, behaviors, and mental health. Recognizing their significance, clinicians must navigate their role in patient care while respecting diverse beliefs. The interaction between religiosity and schizophrenia presents complexities, impacting treatment adherence and outcomes, necessitating a holistic approach to psychiatric care. Conclusion: Religion significantly impacts individuals, including those with psychosis, offering both support and complexities in mental health. Clinicians must acknowledge and address religious aspects sensitively, as they can influence coping mechanisms but also pose risks such as non-adherence to treatment and potential for harm. Integrating religious considerations into clinical practice is crucial for providing holistic mental health care.

Abstract

Background:  Urban life, especially in Surakarta, is easy to access and full of high-carbohydrate food and drink. This has increased unhealthy behavior and diets. The prevalence of diabetes Mellitus (DM) in Surakarta is growing, reaching 24% in 2021. Physical exercise and poor diet are important risk factors for DM, coupled with genetics, causing obesity. HbA1c levels periodically assess DM patients' glycemic management. Objective: This study aims to determine the association between family history, body mass index, and regular exercise with HbA1c status in type 2 DM patients at UNS Surakarta Hospital. Methods: The research was an observational study; 24 patients diagnosed with type 2 DM were recruited from the outpatient clinic of Universitas Sebelas Maret Hospital, Surakarta, Indonesia, in October 2021. Measurements were conducted to determine their HbA1c level by enzymatic methods and body mass index by measuring body weight and height, and they were questioned regarding their physical exercise and family history of diabetes. The data collected were analyzed using multiple logistic regression to ascertain the association between family history, body mass index, and exercise regularity with HbA1c status. Results: The findings indicated no statistically significant association between genetic background, body mass index, and exercise frequency with HbA1c status (p>0.05).Conclusion: This research shows that genetic history, body mass index, and exercise regularity are not associated with HbA1c status in type 2 DM in included subjects.
