Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Junior football players often encounter difficulties in managing their sleep and dietary patterns. At the same time, they need to balance their time between scheduled school activities and training sessions. This dual responsibility can sometimes make junior athletes susceptible to sleep and dietary issues, potentially affecting their performance. This study aimed to examine the sleep patterns and dietary intake of football players across different age groups at a football club in East Java. We compared the sleep patterns and dietary intake of players in the U18 (n=18), U16 (n=13), and U14 (n=8) categories. Data were collected through interviews using validated questionnaires. Dietary intake was assessed with a semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Sleeping quality and quantity were assessed using structured questionnaire adapted from Pittsburgh Sleeping Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed no statistically significant differences in the quality or quantity of sleep across all groups (p > 0.05). However, a trend suggested that U18 players had slightly better sleep quality and quantity compared to the other groups. In contrast, the U18 group demonstrated significantly lower energy intake than the other groups (p = 0.000). The U16 group exhibited the best energy and nutrient intake among all age categories. In conclusion, older and younger player groups tend to overlook dietary patterns, while their sleep patterns remain relatively consistent.

Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 emerged as a novel global health crisis. While it has since been downgraded from its status as a public health emergency of international concern, the virus persists as a global health challenge. This study was aimed to analyze the predictors of LoS in COVID-19 patients based on nutritional status and patient characteristics data. Methods: Participants of this study were the COVID-19 patients with mild to moderate symptoms who registered in COVID-19 Emergency Hospital, East Java, Indonesia. This study involved 2850 patients   extracted from medical records for further analysis. Body mass index (BMI) was generated following the standard formula measured on the first day of hospitalization. LoS was determined by the number of days of hospitalization. The Chi-square automatic interaction detection (CHAID) algorithm was employed for model building. Results: Most participants were overweight (34.6%) and obese (17.2%). Only a few participants were hospitalized with comorbidities such as hypertension (11.6%) and diabetes mellitus (4.1%). The predictive model of LoS indicated that BMI was the main predictor of COVID-19 LoS, with higher BMI showed to prolong the LoS of mild to moderate symptoms patients. Other than BMI, gender and symptoms were also indicated as COVID-19 LoS predictors. Conclusions: Nutritional status is one of the predictors of LoS in COVID-19 patients. Having higher BMI tends to prolong the LoS, especially in male and having fever. LOS was also seen among those with lower BMI less than 18.5, in patients who had cold and flu.

Abstract

Background: The MAD in children has an important role in preventing the risk of undernutrition. MAD in children is often associated with MDD in mothers because the mother's consumption pattern continues to feed the child who is born. Objectives: This systematic review aims to examine the relationship between MDD in mothers and MAD in children, and its role in undernutrition prevention. Methods: Articles were selected using the PRISMA method. Articles were obtained from Sciencedirect, Medline, and Embase in the 2017-2022 timeframe without data restrictions. The vocabulary used in the search is "Maternal Dietary Diversity" and "Minimum Acceptable Diet", and undernutrition, and only researched articles in English. Table matriculation was carried out to obtain an overview of the relationship between MDD in mothers and children's MAD in undernutrition prevention. Discussion: Research from 7 selected studies was conducted in five developing countries with high levels of food insecurity. Samples were obtained of 167 to 10,291 children aged 6-59.9 months. Six studies indicate the level of food insecurity in the area studied. Four of the seven studies showed significant results between MDD in mothers with MAD and undernutrition in children. Conclusions: Maternal MDD has a significant role in MAD in children and can be one of the factors that influence undernutrition, especially in developing countries which are highly food insecure.

Abstract

Background: Lamongan, Indonesia, is facing a significant public health issue, with high rates of stunting (27.5% in 2022) and adolescent anemia (60.0% in Babat district). A significant knowledge gap exists in the community, particularly regarding the effective use of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) for prevention, highlighting the need for structured intervention programs to address these public health issues. This study evaluated an integrated education program designed to improve knowledge and shift perceptions regarding TOGA, assessing differential knowledge gains between health volunteers and adolescents. Methods: This pre-post intervention study involved 54 female participants (27 health volunteers and 27 adolescents) from Kebalanpelang Village, Babat District, Lamongan. All participants received the same 120-minute integrated TOGA-nutrition education based on Social Cognitive Theory, covering stunting prevention, complementary feeding, breastfeeding optimization, and TOGA applications using evidence-based traditional medicinal plants. Knowledge was assessed using the same validated 10-item questionnaire (Cronbach's α=0.81) for both groups, covering three domains: complementary feeding guidelines (3 items), breastfeeding optimization (3 items), and TOGA applications for stunting prevention (4 items), administered before and immediately after the intervention. Results: The intervention was highly effective, yielding a statistically significant 25.4% mean knowledge gain across all participants (3.6±2.1-point gain, p<0.001). Adolescents showed the most dramatic improvement, achieving a 39.7% knowledge increase (a 4.8-point gain). While health volunteers had a more modest gain of 14.7% (a 2.4-point increase), the intervention successfully narrowed the initial knowledge disparity between the two groups by 57% (reducing the gap from Δ4.2 to Δ1.8 points). Domain-specific analysis revealed significant gains across all areas: complementary feeding (+26.8%), breastfeeding (+26.7%), and TOGA applications (+23.9%, all p<0.001). A strong inverse correlation between age and knowledge gain (r=-0.72, p<0.001) indicated that younger participants, particularly those aged 15-17 years, demonstrated superior learning capacity. Conclusions: The implementation of integrated TOGA-nutrition education significantly enhanced stunting prevention knowledge. This intervention is particularly effective for adolescents, which employs role-specific content, successfully mitigates cultural barriers and leads to a measurable reduction in knowledge equity gaps. Strong evidence of participant confirms the program's cultural fit and operational readiness, making a compelling case for its integration and scaling within Indonesia’s broader stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Background: Lactic acid is a primary biomarker of fatigue, produced as a byproduct of anaerobic energy metabolism. Elevated lactic acid levels are associated with muscle fatigue and reduced performance. Consuming alkaline drinks can help speed up the reduction of lactic acid levels. Coconut water, which is rich in nutrients and electrolytes, can also be an alternative for recovery after intense physical activity. Objectives: Evaluate the effect of coconut water and alkaline water on lactic acid after high-intensity physical activity. Methods: Study participants were male university students divided into two groups: alkaline water group (K1) and coconut water group (K2), each consisting of 13 participants with similar characteristics. K1 was given 350 ml of alkaline water and K2 was given 350 ml of coconut water. Lactic acid levels were measured before and after performing a 35-meter sprint running six times. Differences in lactic acid levels between groups were analyzed using an independent t-test. Results: Pre-activity lactic acid levels were 2.55 ± 0.54 mmol/L for the K1 group and 3.2 ± 0.53 mmol/L for the K2 group. Post-intervention, the levels rose to 6.63 ± 2.54 mmol/L for K1 and 8.3 ± 3.15 mmol/L for K2. There was no statistically significant difference in the increase of lactic acid levels between groups (p-value=0.414). Non-significant results indicate that both liquids have an influence on changes in lactic acid levels. Conclusions: Both alkaline water and coconut water demonstrated similar effects in inhibiting the accumulation of lactic acid following high-intensity physical activity.

Abstract

Household organic waste management and yard utilization in Mojorayung Village, Wungu District, Madiun Regency have not been optimally implemented, indicating the need for a practical household-based empowerment model. This study aims to improve community knowledge and skills in managing organic waste and utilizing household yards productively through the Mojorayung BISA program. The activities were conducted in July 2025 using a participatory action-based approach consisting of preparation, education, implementation, monitoring–evaluation, and initial replication stages. Program evaluation was carried out by measuring compost technical parameters and administering pre-tests and post-tests to 30 participants. The results showed an increase in the average score from 75.0 to 83.7 (an increase of 8.7 points), indicating improved understanding of organic waste management and yard utilization. The implementation of the Takakura composting method using approximately 9 kg of organic waste produced about 5.4 kg of mature compost within ±3 weeks, characterized by a temperature decrease from 36–40°C to 26°C and a pH increase from 3.5 to 7. The compost produced was utilized for tomato and chili cultivation and supported the production of organic pesticide made from lemongrass. These findings indicate that the integrated household-level circular model is technically feasible, participatory, and potentially replicable in communities with similar socio-environmental characteristics.
