Abstract

Hypertension is the most prevalent disease in Salatiga City, Central Java. Nurses play a crucial role in treating and preventing hypertension. However, no studies have specifically measured the role of nurses in Community Health Centers (Puskesmas). This study aims to describe the role of nurses in hypertension management at Community Health Centers. A qualitative case study was conducted at the Cebongan Health Center in Salatiga City between May and July 2023. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving 13 nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Triangulation was conducted by gathering additional input from community health center heads and cadres. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data, including transcription, coding, categorization, theme development, and drawing conclusions. Nurses at the Cebongan Health Center manage hypertension through various roles, including case finding via blood pressure screenings, acting as educators and consultants, coordinating care, and serving as role models for healthy living behaviors. However, challenges such as the limited number of nurses relative to the target area's population, inadequate infrastructure, and minimal community participation hinder efforts to control hypertension effectively in community health centers. While the role of nurses in managing hypertension has been implemented, it still requires optimization—particularly in areas like case finding through screenings and serving as role models for healthy living.

Abstract

Breast cancer affects women of all ages after adolescence in every country around the world, and its incidence increases with age. One of the efforts to prevent breast cancer is through early screening, which can be done via breast self-examination (BSE). This study aims to analyze the relationship between adolescent girls' perceptions and their behavior regarding breast self-examination at a vocational high school (SMK) in Lhokseumawe City. This research is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at a vocational high school in Lhokseumawe City with a sample size of 191 students. The selection of research subjects was done purposively according to predetermined criteria. The chi-square analysis results showed that variables such as adolescents' perceptions of severity, self-efficacy, perceived costs, knowledge, family support, and peer support were significantly related to the practice of BSE among adolescents, with a p-value of 0.05. However, after performing multiple logistic regression tests, only the adolescents' perceptions of costs, knowledge, and family support were simultaneously related to BSE behavior, with a p-value of 0.05. Improving adolescents' perceptions of breast self-examination can influence their behavior. Health promotion efforts through information media and involving family and peers as strategies for disseminating health education to adolescents, using demonstrations and involving teachers, are strategies that can be used.

Abstract

Uncontrolled hyperglycemia causes hyperosmolarity, stimulating osmotic diuresis and leading to excessive dehydration which can result in death. Therefore, early detection of hypovolemic shock is necessary for immediate management. The aim of the study is to assess the shock index values in hyperglycemic patients in medical and surgical emergency rooms. Using a descriptive method, this study included a population of hyperglycemic patients from January 30 to March 11, 2023, with a sample of 40 patients meeting the inclusion criteria of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS) complications. The instrument used were observation sheets and shock index assessment indicators. The results showed that 16.7% of respondents with DKA experienced moderate shock, 72.2% mild shock, and 11.1% without shock. Meanwhile, 50% of respondents with HHS experienced severe shock, and 50% moderate shock. Mild shock was most common in DKA due to sufficient body fluids preventing a drop in blood pressure and pulse rate. Conversely, HHS patient exhibited severe and moderate shock because high blood glucose levels caused osmotic diuresis, leading to excessive dehydration. It can be concluded that higher blood glucose levels result in more severe dehydration thus worsening the shock condition

Abstract

Menstrual problems affect as high as 90% of adolescent females and are the main reason for gynecology visits. Menstruation is a normal physiological phenomenon for females indicating her capability for procreation. Menstrual problems are common in adolescent girls, which may affect their life and outdoor activities. Adolescent girls with abnormal body mass index (BMI) suffer even more often. This study aimed to To assess the relationship between Menstrual Cycle Disorders and Symptoms Menstrual Cycle with BMI among adolescent school in MTs Bustanul Ulum. This study was a cross-sectional study conducted among 30 adolescent school girls of MTs Bustanul Ulum. Permission was obtained from principal of the school and written informed consent was taken from the parents of the school girls before taking part in the study. MC disorders included amenorrhoea, polymenorrhea, oligomenorrhoea, hypermenorrhoea and hypomenorrhoea. MC-related symptoms included dysmenorrhoea and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). All the data were collected, entered, and analyzed in SPSS 17.0. The data were analyzed using percentages and proportions through tables. Out of 30 adolescent girls, 19 (63.3%) were having a BMI 18.5, which implies that 50% of the girls were undernourished. Only 2 (6.7%) of adolescent girls were overweight. Adolescent girls who have a BMI 18.5 experience more symptoms and problems associated with menstrual cycles. This difference was statistically significant. Menstrual problems especially dysmenorrhea are frequent among adolescent girls. BMI play a very vital role for menstrual cycle regularity. Consequently, adolescent girls have to be given healthy and balance nutrition, which leads to maintenance of their normal BMI and regulate their menstrual cycle.

Abstract

Sarcoptes scabiei, a variant of the hominid mite, is the cause of scabies, a skin infestation. In Indonesia, scabies accounted for three of the top 12 skin infestations. Scabies infections are particularly common in islamic boarding schools largely due to poor personal hygiene, which increases the risk of the students being infected. This study aimed to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and the prevalence of scabies. A total of 184 samples that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were obtained for this study using a cross-sectional method and purposive sampling. Fisher’s exact test and Chi-square analysis were performed on the data. The results showed that the prevalence of scabies is 28.8%. The findings indicate a significant relationship between the prevalence of scabies and showering behavior (p=0.002), hand and nail hygiene (p=0.006), and bedding hygiene (p=0.013). However, no correlation was found between the prevalence of scabies and clothing hygiene (p=0.931). When considering overall showering habits, hand and nail hygiene, and bedding hygiene, there was a significant correlation between student hygiene and scabies prevalence (p=0.030). Islamic boarding schools could address this issue by promoting clean and healthy living habits, imposing sanctions for violations, and cooperating with health facilities to carry out periodic treatment for students suffering from scabies.

Abstract

The achievement of exclusive breastfeeding in Banda Aceh City is still categorized as low from the national target. This problem requires efforts to be made by stakeholders, one of which is through advocacy. This study aims to analyze the dimensions of exclusive breastfeeding policy advocacy in Banda Aceh City. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of interviews through open-ended questions. Field observations were conducted in the form of observations of breastfeeding socialization and education activities. Secondary data was collected by reviewing documents relevant to the research. The results found that exclusive breastfeeding policy advocacy activities in Banda Aceh City were not optimal. There is a weakness in the action dimension of advocacy, where stakeholders in the implementation of the breastfeeding program are still running independently.  There is no collective action among stakeholders. The collective action of stakeholders in the implementation of the exclusive breastfeeding program is important to produce optimal breastfeeding outcomes. Optimization of exclusive breastfeeding achievements can be obtained if stakeholders collaborate together in a roadmap of breastfeeding programs and activities in Banda Aceh City.

Abstract

This study explores the effects of a comprehensive training program on the skills, knowledge, and motivation of Posyandu cadres in Guntung Manggis, Banjarbaru, Indonesia—a region with notably high maternal and infant mortality rates. The sample included 68 Posyandu cadres, divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group underwent an interactive, hands-on training program, which led to significant improvements in knowledge and practical skills compared to the control group. Post-training, the intervention group’s mean skills score increased from 48.24 ± 6.47 to 74.15 ± 7.85, while the control group showed no significant change. These findings suggest that comprehensive training programs, which incorporate practical and interactive components, are more effective than traditional lecture-based methods in enhancing cadre competencies. It is recommended that health authorities consider adopting such training programs on a larger scale, particularly in high-need areas, as a strategy to improve maternal and child health outcomes and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a gradually worsening, non-inflammatory condition that affects the synovial joints, with its prevalence rising as people age. The initial symptoms often include joint pain during movement, which can limit mobility in older adults. This restriction in movement can lead to stiffness, reduced functional ability, and challenges in fulfilling daily tasks for the elderly. This study aims to analyze the effect of red ginger oil and kinesiotaping on pain, stiffness and functional ability using the WOMAC score instrument. This study is a Quasi Experiment study with a Nonequivalent sample technique (pretest and posttest) control group with a sample size of 60, divided into 4 groups, namely the red ginger oil group, the kinesiotaping group, the combined red ginger oil + kinesiotaping group, and the control group. The red ginger oil and kinesiotaping intervention was carried out for 7 days. The results showed that there was a simultaneous effect of red ginger oil administration (p-value 0.000; RSquare 0.669), kinesiotaping (p-value 0.000; R-Square 0.877) and a combination of red ginger oil kinesiotaping (p-value 0.002; R-Square 0.532). The use of red ginger oil and kinesiotaping interventions showed significant results or had an impact on the WOMAC score, making them promising alternative therapies for reducing the severity of osteoarthritis in the elderly

Abstract

surgical process. Family support plays a crucial role in helping patients manage preoperative anxiety. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between family support and anxiety levels in patients undergoing major elective surgery with general anesthesia. The research design was cross-sectional. The study population consisted of 92 patients, with a sample size of 75 recruited through non-probability purposive sampling. The study utilized family support and Amsterdam preoperative anxiety and information Scale (APAIS) questionnaires as instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests, including Spearman’s rank correlation (Rho) with a p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The results showed that almost all participant received high levels of family support (81.3%) and moderate level of preoperative anxiety (81.3%). The Spearman rank test indicated a significant relationship between family support and anxiety levels (p-value = 0.000 0.05) with a very strong, negative correlation (r = -.870). In conclusion, higher the family support is associated with lower anxiety level in preoperative patients. It is recommended that families provide consistent support during preoperative phase to help reduce patient level of anxiety.
