Abstract

This study aims to describe innovations in Arabic language learning through TikTok content assignments at Al-Azhar 14 High School in Semarang and to analyze the accuracy of qawāʿid usage in students' video products. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation of the assignment process and in-depth analysis of four videos produced by tenth-grade students. The results show that the TikTok platform has successfully transformed learning into an authentic performance assessment. Although the assignment initially triggered language anxiety, it encouraged students to practice repeatedly (tikrār) to achieve optimal pronunciation. Linguistic findings identified phonetic errors in sound shifts and grammatical errors in the form of inconsistencies between fiʿil and ḍamīr. The study concludes that TikTok is an effective driver of communicative language practice, with group collaboration reducing students' cognitive load through shared thinking and collective scaffolding. Abstract

The Madinah Arabic website provides free Arabic language learning materials, including images, instructional videos, and conversational content on YouTube. Although numerous studies have discussed the use of digital media in Arabic language learning, research on the implementation of the Madinah Arabic website for teaching Arabic grammar (nahwu) in Islamic boarding school settings remains limited, particularly in schools with restricted access to digital devices. Therefore, this study aimed to implement the website https://www.madinaharabic.com/ in nahwu instruction at MTs Nahdlatul Ulum Kresek Tangerang and to examine its effectiveness in improving students' grammatical understanding. This study employed a quantitative, quasi-experimental design with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Data were collected through observation, pretest-posttest, interviews, and library research. The participants were seventh-grade students at MTs. The findings revealed that the use of web-based media significantly improved students' competence in nahwu. The experimental class showed an increase in mean scores from 41.76 in the pretest to 82.79 in the posttest, while the control class improved from 42.30 to 78.24. The t-test results indicated a p-value of < 0.05, demonstrating that the Madinah Arabic website was effective in helping students understand and apply Arabic grammatical rules. Abstract

The limited availability of Arabic storybooks that are relevant to the characteristics of Madrasah Tsanawiyah students has contributed to students’ low engagement in Arabic reading activities. Existing Arabic literacy materials in madrasah learning tend to rely on textbook passages, while story-based media that integrate Qur’anic stories remain limited. This study aims to develop Arabic storybooks based on Qur’anic stories as literacy media to support mahārah qirā’ah among Madrasah Tsanawiyah students. This research employed a Research and Development design using a limited ADDIE model, covering the Analyze, Design, and Develop stages. Data were collected through needs-analysis questionnaires, interviews, observations, and expert validation sheets, and analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques. The validation results showed an average score of 83.5%, which falls into the highly feasible category. This result indicates that the developed storybook meets the feasibility criteria for content, language, graphics, and presentation. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of Arabic literacy media by integrating narrative learning, visual support, and Qur’anic values. In practice, the product can be used as supplementary reading material for Arabic learning by MTs students. However, this study is limited to product development and expert validation; therefore, its effectiveness in improving students’ reading interest and reading comprehension requires further empirical testing. Abstract

This study explores the role of translation tests in assessing Arabic language proficiency, with a theoretical foundation and practical implementation aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The study adopts a descriptive-qualitative method using literature review and content analysis. The research instrument used was an analysis sheet for translation test items, developed from a synthesis of translation assessment models proposed by Newmark, Catford, and the CEFR, covering levels A1 to C2. The data were analyzed using content analysis techniques, including categorization, data reduction, cognitive-level mapping based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, and theoretical triangulation to ensure interpretive accuracy. These tests are mapped to Bloom’s Taxonomy to measure a spectrum of cognitive abilities from basic recall to creative synthesis. Results show that translation tests effectively evaluate key aspects of Arabic language proficiency, including comprehension of meaning, structural accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and both interpretive and productive abilities. At the A1–A2 levels, translation tests were used to assess learners’ ability to understand basic vocabulary and simple sentence structures, while at the B1–B2 levels, the tests assessed learners’ competence in interpreting contextual meanings, idiomatic expressions, and relationships between ideas. At the C1–C2 levels, translation tests demonstrated effectiveness in assessing analytical and evaluative skills, as well as the accurate reproduction of meaning in accordance with Arabic cultural and pragmatic contexts. Additionally, the study highlights four main evaluation methods: impressionistic, group, analytical, and mechanical to ensure valid and reliable scoring. The findings support the use of translation tests as a comprehensive tool for measuring communicative performance and language mastery in Arabic learning contexts. Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing students’ motivation to learn as well as their speaking and writing skills in Arabic. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving 30 participants from Madrasah Aliyah Mambaus Shalihin Gresik, who were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through a learning motivation questionnaire using a Likert scale, as well as through pre- and post-tests to measure speaking and writing skills. The findings indicate that both groups possessed comparable baseline skills. However, following the implementation of the PjBL model, the experimental group demonstrated greater improvement in learning motivation than the control group, with an average score of 82.13%, considered high. Additionally, the experimental group demonstrated superiority in speaking and writing skills, as indicated by final test results and gain scores. Although this model proved effective in creating a dynamic, collaborative, and authentic learning process, there were several challenges in its implementation, including the need for more time, greater teacher attention, and differences in students' participation levels. In practice, these challenges can be addressed by implementing smaller projects, providing clear guidelines, and conducting regular group monitoring, so that teachers at madrasahs can effectively implement PjBL despite limitations in time and supervision. For this reason, the PjBL model is recommended as an innovative approach to improving productive Arabic language skills at madrasahs. Abstract

The objectives of this study are: first, to identify phonetic difficulties in pronouncing hijaiyah letters and the factors influencing them among students of MTs Ma’had Salafiyah Chasanul Hidayah Tanjung Medan, Rokan Hulu. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and pronunciation tests to analyze students’ ability to articulate hijaiyah letters accurately. Then, the data were analyzed descriptively through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification of interview and observation results. The findings indicate that, first, phonetic difficulties lie in the inability to distinguish similar sounds, challenges in pronouncing pharyngeal (halqiyah) letters, and differences in students’ abilities. Second, the influencing factors include weak phonological awareness, mother-tongue interference, educational background, and psychological and physiological factors. Therefore, improving pronunciation skills cannot rely solely on practice but requires a comprehensive and integrative instructional approach. This study recommends developing technology-based, integrative phonetic teaching methods, enhancing teacher training, and conducting further research to examine the effectiveness of multimodal strategies for sustainably and contextually improving students’ pronunciation accuracy.  Keyword: Arabic Pronunciation, Phonetic Difficulties, Phonological Awareness

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Arabic language traditions in improving students’ speaking skills (maharah al-kalam) at Darul Ihsan Modern Islamic Boarding School, based on the problem that speaking proficiency is not evenly developed among students despite the existence of an organized language environment, which requires a deeper investigation of the effectiveness of language traditions within the institution. This research uses a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach and was conducted at Darul Ihsan Modern Islamic Boarding School, Hamparan Perak, Indonesia, over a period of three months. The research sample consisted of 12 participants, including language supervisors and several students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and validated using source triangulation and member checking, while data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Arabic language traditions such as daily conversation, vocabulary enrichment, speaking practice (speech activities), and language supervision contribute to improving students’ speaking skills, not only in linguistic aspects but also in psychological aspects, including courage, self-confidence, and reduced fear of making mistakes. The study also reveals that the effectiveness of the language environment depends on a structured and integrated habituation system. The novelty of this research lies in viewing Arabic language traditions as an integrated educational system that combines linguistic, psychological, and social dimensions rather than merely a conventional language environment. The study concludes that developing speaking skills requires integrating language programs with structured daily habituation and continuous psychological support, thereby contributing to the improvement of Arabic language teaching in Islamic educational institutions. Abstract

Observations in the tenth-grade class at Madrasah Aliyah Muhammadiyah Medan indicate that some students lack enthusiasm for learning Arabic because they perceive it as a traditional, outdated, and uninteresting language. One of the causes is the lack of media utilization. The integration of innovative and contemporary educational media is essential for supporting effective teaching and learning practices. However, some teachers are still lagging in the use of digital media, particularly in the learning assessment process. Therefore, this study aims to develop a Wordwall-based interactive digital picture quiz and evaluate its effectiveness in assessing Arabic language learning, student motivation, and learning outcomes. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an assessment tool, specifically a quiz that combines visual, interactive, and game-based elements to assess students’ understanding of isim based on quantity in Arabic education at the Muhammadiyah I Islamic Senior High School. This study employed a research and development approach based on the ADDIE model. Expert validation results indicated a media feasibility rate of 95%, a content validity rate of 94%, a student motivation rate of 76.5% (classified as high), a reliability test result using Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.961, and an average student learning outcome score of 90 following media use. Thus, it can be concluded that this quiz media is highly effective for implementation in learning. Keywords: Development, Evaluation Media, Interactive Digital Picture Quiz

Abstract

As Arabic is the language of the Holy Qur’an and the rich Islamic intellectual heritage, teaching Arabic to non-native speakers is an important academic and pedagogical responsibility that requires careful selection and evaluation of instructional materials based on rigorous scientific criteria. This study aims to evaluate the vocabulary content of the Arabic language textbook for second-grade junior secondary students, published by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2020, in light of Al-Khuli’s vocabulary criteria, recognizing vocabulary as a fundamental component in the development of learners’ linguistic competence. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach using the Miles and Huberman model for qualitative data analysis. The findings indicate that the overall fulfillment rate for the vocabulary criteria was 82.8%, categorized as “highly fulfilled.” The analysis demonstrates that the textbook exhibits methodological clarity in presenting new vocabulary and adheres to the principles of frequency, usefulness, simplicity, and relevance in vocabulary selection. Furthermore, the vocabulary items correspond appropriately to learners’ objectives, daily communicative needs, and developmental stage. The density of new vocabulary is also considered suitable for learners at this educational level. However, the study identified a weakness in the vocabulary control criterion in reading texts, as numerous lexical items appeared beyond the targeted vocabulary scope, resulting in a noticeable discrepancy between the vocabulary introduced in preparatory activities and that used in the reading passages. Accordingly, the study recommends revising the reading texts to ensure alignment with the targeted vocabulary list, explicitly stating the vocabulary selection criteria in the textbook introduction, and incorporating a clear classification of active and passive vocabulary.
