Abstract

This study investigates the values of local wisdom embodied in the Marpangir tradition practiced by the community of Kota Natal as they prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, with a particular focus on its potential integration into Social Studies learning. Rooted in cultural and religious practices, Marpangir serves not only as a ritual of physical and spiritual purification but also as a medium for transmitting values such as cleanliness, piety, solidarity, and communal cooperation. These values are essential in shaping students' character and fostering cultural awareness through contextual learning. Employing a qualitative research approach with ethnographic methods, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the Marpangir tradition represents a rich educational resource that can be meaningfully incorporated into Social Studies curricula to enhance students' understanding of local culture and strengthen their social and moral values. This study concludes that integrating local cultural traditions into educational content not only preserves heritage but also enriches pedagogical practices in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

The Israeli intervention that occurred in Gaza in 2023 caused a wave of reactions from countries and the global community, showing differences in orientation and approach. Since the war, the global public has shown a strong reaction to Israeli attacks on civilians and has demanded a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons. In contrast, states have been divided into those who joined to condemn Israel and others who supported Israel. This article comparatively analyses the response of the state and the international public to genocide in Gaza from the perspective of nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Nationalism focuses on prioritizing the state interest over others, whereas cosmopolitanism addresses individual rights as the most important thing in global politics. This study uses qualitative methods to interpret the varieties of the states and publics by collecting online documents from websites, journals, and media. This study found that countries tend to act based on national interests, geopolitical considerations, strategic alliances, and domestic stability. Even among Muslim countries and supporters of Palestine, the attitudes shown are often ineffective because they are shackled by domestic political and economic calculations. Instead, the global public displayed strong cosmopolitan solidarity through demonstrations, digital campaigns, and economic boycotts as a form of defence of human rights and universal justice. The tension between a nationalistic approach to the state and a cosmopolitan public response indicates a wide gap between the state and the public stance toward the Gaza genocide.

Abstract

This study aims to examine gender differences in assertive behavior among firstborn students and to analyze the implications for school guidance and counseling services. The research employs a quantitative descriptive comparative approach with 60 respondents (30 male and 30 female firstborn students) selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated assertiveness scale covering seven aspects: expressing feelings, rejecting requests, initiating interactions, expressing personal opinions, defending personal rights, requesting changes in others, and facing criticism. Statistical analysis revealed that male firstborn students demonstrate higher levels of assertiveness than their female counterparts across most indicators. These findings suggest that gender plays a significant role in shaping assertive behavior among firstborns, likely influenced by sociocultural expectations and familial roles. The results underscore the importance of implementing gender-responsive guidance and counseling strategies in schools to foster healthy communication, self-confidence, and emotional resilience among students, particularly those experiencing role pressure as firstborns.

Abstract

Truancy is a form of disciplinary violation that can negatively impact students’ academic achievement and character development. This study aims to identify the factors contributing to truancy among junior high school students and to analyze its implications for school guidance and counseling services. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, involving 20 purposively selected students from SMPN 2 Batang Anai. Data were collected using a questionnaire covering both internal and external factors. The results indicate that dominant internal factors include a desire to play and lack of learning motivation (60%), while key external factors are peer influence and insufficient teacher supervision (70%). These findings reveal that truancy behavior arises from a combination of personal and environmental factors. Accordingly, comprehensive, and responsive guidance and counseling services, such as information services, group counseling, and parent-school collaboration are essential to prevent and address truancy in a structured manner.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the Horja Patibal Sere tradition among the Mandailing ethnic group in Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal Regency. Employing a qualitative research method, the study utilized in-depth data collection through observation, interviews, documentation, and data analysis techniques. The findings reveal that Patibal Sere is a compulsory customary ritual held at night, involving family members, religious figures, and traditional leaders. During the ceremony, the agreed-upon mahar (bridal dowry) is presented on a ceremonial tray along with symbolic items such as burangir (betel leaves), yellow rice, areca nut, banana leaf tips, and a traditional long cloth. Following the symbolic handover, the bride’s mother carries the dowry, representing a gesture of nurturing, protecting, and caring for the continuity of the marriage. The Mandailing people, an ethnic group from North Sumatra, possess a rich and distinctive cultural heritage. The Patibal Sere tradition, passed down for generations, remains an essential component of the customary marriage rites. It reflects the deep-rooted values, identity, and social cohesion within the Mandailing community, particularly emphasizing the sacredness and communal nature of marriage through ancestral rituals.‎

Abstract

Parental divorce is a critical life event that can significantly affect a child’s psychological development, particularly in terms of self-acceptance. This study aims to describe the level of self-acceptance among junior high school students who have experienced parental divorce, examined by the length of time since the divorce. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, the research involved 35 students of SMP Negeri 1 Sijunjung selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a self-acceptance scale adapted from previous studies and analyzed with descriptive statistics via JASP. Results indicate that most students demonstrate high (65.7%) or very high (8.6%) levels of self-acceptance, with a tendency for higher acceptance over longer periods since parental divorce. These findings highlight the role of consistent psychosocial support, cultural factors, and school-based counseling in fostering resilience and healthy self-acceptance in adolescents from divorced families.

Abstract

Online gambling has increasingly attracted Generation Z due to aggressive promotional strategies and the widespread availability of digital platforms. Beyond entertainment, it offers the allure of quick financial gains, which intensifies participation. This study aims to explore Generation Z’s perceptions of online gambling within a specific local context, highlighting behavioral attitudes and potential risks. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations with selected respondents in Rahuning II village, Asahan Regency. Findings reveal that participants generally view online gambling as an inappropriate and ethically questionable activity, associating it with adverse psychological, financial, and social consequences. Respondents emphasized the long-term risks, including addiction, economic instability, and strained interpersonal relationships. These results contribute to the discourse on digital risk behavior among youth, providing insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders to design targeted interventions and educational campaigns aimed at prevention. This research also enriches theoretical understanding of risk perception in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between academic stress and online gaming addiction among high school students. The research involved 258 students from SMAN 1 Baso, selected through a stratified random sampling technique. A quantitative approach with a correlational method was employed. The instruments used were the Academic Stress Scale and the Online Gaming Addiction Scale, both of which had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test with the help of SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. The results indicated that students' academic stress levels were in the moderate category (56.08%), while their online gaming addiction levels were also moderate (57.11%). Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between academic stress and online gaming addiction (r = 0.356; p < 0.05). This indicates that the higher the level of academic stress experienced by students, the higher their tendency toward online gaming addiction. These findings are expected to serve as a foundation for school counselors and educational institutions in designing prevention and intervention programs to reduce both academic stress and online gaming addiction among students.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of differentiated learning in the history topic Events Around the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence for Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 12 Semarang. The central issue addressed is how teachers accommodate students' diverse learning styles, interests, and readiness levels within the historical learning process. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. Findings reveal that differentiation is primarily applied in the learning product aspect, guided by students’ learning style assessments using the Aku Pintar application. Students are offered various final assignment formats—such as infographics, podcasts, or videos—aligned with their learning profiles. Despite facing technical challenges and limited instructional time, the differentiated approach successfully enhances students' motivation and comprehension. The study concludes that differentiated learning holds significant promise for fostering an inclusive and adaptive educational environment, particularly within the framework of the Merdeka Curriculum.‎

Abstract

This article examines the transformation of Pasar Bambu Kuning, a traditional market in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, from its establishment during the colonial Dutch East Indies period to its transformation into an urban economic center in 2010. Using historical methods such as heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this article draws on primary sources such as local and national newspapers, colonial-era visual sources, and secondary sources including scholarly articles, research reports, books, and unpublished theses. The findings of this study reveal that Pasar Bambu Kuning evolved from a colonial periodic market into a vital permanent trading center after Indonesia’s independence, driven by population growth and commercial needs. This transformation included major renovations between 1974 and 1990, resulting in a three-story building structure, although the process was marked by conflicts and disputes among the stakeholders. This study contributes significantly to the understanding of the historical transformation of traditional markets in Indonesia and their role in shaping urban economies and societies. It serves as a valuable historical reference for future studies on urban development and the revitalization of traditional markets.
