Abstract

Sumatran batik has motifs that have deep meanings adopted from everyday life, and many are already rarely produced. The problem in this study is how the process of revitalizing Sumatran batik will be downstream into the creative industry. The purpose of this study is to create a digital revitalization model for rare Sumatran batik motifs, with a focus on their integration into the local creative industry, which can increase cultural awareness and increase market potential in the creative industry. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a visual language approach. The sample in this study is a digital batik with a sample of the Tarok-tarok Boraspati produced by MSMEs. Results show that digitizing batik motifs not only maintains visual authenticity but also enables scalable and market-relevant innovation, contributing to cultural preservation and creative economic growth. The main result is a structured batik composition that maintains the identity of the main motif while enabling wider commercial applications. This approach offers a replicable model for other cultural regions that aim to combine heritage with innovation and increase global cultural visibility through the creative industry.

Abstract

The development of popular music in Indonesia as a country with rich cultural plurality, is interesting to study. The dominant study of the dangdut genre has the potential to overlook the artistic richness contained in its various musical genres. The setting of the 1970s as a historical period of global modern society that gave birth to many countercultural phenomena and leaps in communication technology in developing countries, including Indonesia, has guided the focus of our research. This research aims to answer the question of how the cluster of artistic values of 1970s Indonesian popular music in its popular songs was able to make an inspirational contribution to the development of Indonesian popular music thereafter. The choice of the conceptual foundation of art historical functionalism has led us to use an interdisciplinary research design that includes a musicological approach to analyze the form of the song, a cultural studies approach to interpret the artistic content of the music text, and a critical discourse analysis to examine the contradictions of the music discourse. From the results of the combined analysis, we found that the artistic value of 1970s Indonesian popular music stands on the foundation of artistic form supported by the three forms of songs as musical compositions, and the aesthetics of song lyrics. In addition, it was found that the cluster of artistic value that includes aesthetic value, emotional response, aesthetic value, cognitive knowledge, and historical value in 1970s Indonesian popular songs also offers artistic novelty as well as a distinctive, advanced expression impact. The findings of this study have provided additional knowledge of popular music, with an emphasis on the functionalization of the artistic value of a song in its historical setting. The findings also contribute to the need for the study of Indonesian popular music with its rich artistic content to develop an interdisciplinary approach.

Abstract

The increasing dominance of vertical video formats on mobile-first platforms such as Instagram Reels and TikTok presents new challenges for First Person View (FPV) drone videography, especially when capturing natural landscapes. This study aims to investigate the technical and compositional constraints of FPV drones in producing vertical video content for social media. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through field observation, interviews with 10 professional FPV pilots, and a supplementary online survey. The findings reveal key limitations, including fixed horizontal camera orientation, lack of gimbal-based stabilization, and control systems ergonomically optimized for horizontal framing. These constraints hinder smooth movement, reduce composition flexibility, and increase the difficulty of capturing high-quality vertical footage. Although some pilots attempt workarounds, such as custom camera mounts and post-production cropping, these solutions are often labor-intensive and compromise video quality. This study contributes practical insights for drone designers and content creators seeking to adapt FPV technology for vertical video production and offers a foundation for future research into hardware innovation and workflow adaptation in response to evolving social media trends.

Abstract

This study addresses a pedagogical challenge in higher education, namely the lack of instructional materials for guitar ensemble courses. This issue has been identified in the Music Department of ISI Yogyakarta, where students encounter difficulties engaging with classical Western music materials due to unfamiliarity, particularly among those without prior training in formal music education or vocational music programs. To mitigate this challenge, arrangements of Indonesian national songs are introduced as a strategic approach, leveraging their familiarity to enhance student engagement and motivation in ensemble practice. This study arranges Bangun Pemudi Pemuda, a national song selected for its rhythmic and melodic qualities that lend themselves well to classical guitar ensemble performance. The arrangement employs four distinct voices, mirroring choral harmonization. A key innovation in this arrangement is the incorporation of the dodecaphonic scale, designed to introduce students to modern arrangement techniques, specifically the twelve-tone series. This research adopts an artistic research methodology, encompassing the arrangement process and its implementation in guitar ensemble classes. The qualitative dimension is examined through focus group discussions (FGDs), literature reviews, and classroom observations, fostering dialogue and interaction. This study aims to develop instructional materials that support students in cultivating classical guitar proficiency, ensuring that the applied techniques contribute to their technical advancement while utilizing national songs as an accessible entry point for learning.

Abstract

This study explores the role of indigenous musical play in promoting holistic child development through the lens of Zambian children’s game songwriting. While global early childhood music education often relies on imported songs and commercial materials, Zambian classrooms rarely incorporate local musical traditions, resulting in cultural disconnects and limited child engagement. This research addresses the urgent need to revitalize traditional children's musical games as pedagogical tools that are culturally relevant and developmentally beneficial. The primary objective of the study is to investigate how songwriting based on indigenous children’s games can be integrated into early childhood education to support cognitive, emotional, social, and psychomotor development. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, fieldwork was conducted across three rural communities in Zambia, involving interviews with elders, teachers, and children, alongside observation and documentation of musical play practices. A selection of children's game songs was analyzed in terms of structure, meaning, and pedagogical potential. The findings reveal that traditional game songs possess rich educational value, fostering language development, emotional expression, group cooperation, and cultural identity. Furthermore, teachers expressed renewed interest and positive responses when introduced to culturally grounded teaching materials derived from children's lived experiences. The study concludes that integrating indigenous musical play into early education not only enhances learning outcomes but also strengthens the cultural continuity between school and home environments. This research contributes to the discourse on culturally responsive pedagogy and offers practical strategies for educators seeking to enrich classroom practices with locally meaningful musical resources

Abstract

This study investigates the batik production process through a focused experimental approach on three key aspects: motif exploration, technique application, and the use of natural dyes extracted from Ketapang leaves. Employing a practice-led research methodology, the experiments were conducted at Rumoh Batik Malaka in Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Data were collected via systematic observation, experimental trials, and a comprehensive literature review. The color quality of batik samples was quantitatively assessed through RGB value analysis using grayscale imaging processed in MATLAB software. Results revealed that natural dyes derived from Ketapang leaves exhibit a measurable decline in color intensity when applied to batik textiles. Specifically, samples fixed with alum and calcium oxide and subjected to two dipping cycles showed significant fading, with grayscale values increasing from 0.5 to 0.7 post-wax removal (lorod). Conversely, optimal color retention was observed in samples fixed with ferrous sulfate and subjected to four dipping cycles, presenting minimal fading with values rising only from 0.1 to 0.2 after lorod. Six distinct batik pieces were produced, showcasing diverse motifs and color variations derived from the natural dye. The findings confirm that dye concentration and fixation type critically influence the colorfastness and aesthetic outcome, supporting the viability of Ketapang leaf extracts as sustainable natural dyes for cotton batik production. This research contributes to enriching batik design practices by promoting natural dye applications and innovative stamping techniques, offering ecological and cultural value to the textile arts in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

This study explores independently published comics in Indonesia after 2010, which show differences from independent comics in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Contemporary independent comics distinguish themselves by positioning readers as patrons and the application of transmedia storytelling across platforms, especially related to film and music, and not for industrial purposes. The research questions presented are: what are transmedia storytelling practices in contemporary independent comics in Indonesia, and how is the context of creative freedom and control that underlies the production of printed comics presented through cross-media platforms? Using qualitative methodology, this study applies descriptive discourse analysis based on the visual culture framework, following Gillian Rose's methodological approach. The descriptive analysis focuses on the case study of transmedia storytelling "Pendekar Cyborg", an independently published comic series, which intersects with other media such as motion comics, animated music videos, film, and music. The findings show that contemporary Indonesian independent comics engage in canonical transmedia storytelling, in dimensions of spreadability, continuity, and multiplicity, while still reflecting the socio-political context. The work “Pendekar Cyborg” affirms creative freedom within an independent artistic community and expands narrative experiences through innovative, creator-driven transmedia strategies with community support. This research contributes to understanding how independent visual storytelling in Indonesia embraces transmedia formats to negotiate cultural meaning and audience engagement.

Abstract

This study examines how hybrid visual practices in subcultural contexts challenge the binary between art and design. It addresses the theoretical division proposed by Tsion Avital, who posits a strict dichotomy between symbolic art and functional design. Using this framework, the visual discourse of the Indonesian collective Penahitam is critically analyzed. The 9th edition of Penahitam's artzine, Madness, is selected as a case study due to its thematic depth and ideological complexity. The research applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to integrate textual, visual, and contextual elements, exploring how meaning is constructed through the interplay of image, text, layout, and cultural production. Avital’s symbolic-functional theory serves as a lens to assess how Penahitam negotiates between expressive freedom and visual functionality. Findings indicate that Madness reconfigures the relationship between artistic and design elements into a hybrid visual discourse. The artzine's layout, poetic writing, dark-art illustrations, and socio-political content work cohesively to communicate ideological resistance while remaining accessible. This integration disrupts Avital’s dichotomy, showing how hybridity becomes a strategic tool for expression and subcultural authorship. Furthermore, the production and dissemination of the artzine across 29 Indonesian cities underscore Penahitam’s commitment to collective authorship, independence, and decentralized cultural activism. This study contributes to the discourse on art-design hybridity by offering a concrete analytical model for understanding how independent collectives use visual media to challenge dominant narratives and assert creative autonomy.
