Abstract

Drowning is a life-threatening emergency due to shortness of breath caused by lungs submerged in fluid. Fishermen are one group of people who must understand first aid treatment for drowning victims. Knowledge of first aid for drowning victims is important because drowning victims require immediate treatment or assistance. The knowledge that can be provided to fishermen is educational videos. This study aimed to explain the effect of educational videos on knowledge and attitudes about CPR as a first aid for drowning victims among fishermen in Muara Angke. In this study, we employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-post test approach. This study used a sample of 16 respondents. The independent variable of this study is the CPR educational video, and the dependent variable is Knowledge and Attitude in helping drowning victims. The results of the t-test analysis obtained differences in knowledge before and after being given an educational video about CPR, the p value was 0.000 (p value <0.05), while the difference in attitude before and after being given an educational video about CPR, the p value was 0.001 (p value <0.05). This indicates that there is a significant difference between knowledge and attitude in carrying out CPR in respondents before and after being given an educational video about CPR as Basic Life Support for drowning victims. Audiovisual media such as educational videos can be an effective learning method in increasing individual understanding and awareness of first aid measures, especially cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Abstract

Adequate nutrition is very important for the body, especially during the growth and development of children. Stunting is a condition of impaired growth in children under five years of age due to chronic malnutrition. This study aims to determine the effect of providing additional animal protein through complementary feeding (MP-ASI) and education based on visual media on the anthropometric parameter of waist circumference in children with stunting. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design. The study involved a sample of 9 respondents who were children with stunting in the working area of the Jayengan Public Health Center, Surakarta City. The sample criteria included children with a waist circumference not appropriate for their age. Total sampling was used as the sampling technique, meaning all eligible individuals from the population were included in the study. The implications of this research indicate that the combination of providing additional animal protein through complementary feeding (MP-ASI) and visual media-based education is an effective strategy for improving the nutritional status of children with stunting. Specifically, this combined intervention significantly increased the children's waist circumference after the program. This demonstrates that the method successfully improved a crucial anthropometric parameter related to the nutritional status of stunted children. The practical implication is that this approach can be implemented by health workers in public health centers (puskesmas) or community health posts (posyandu) as a nutritional program model to accelerate stunting reduction, particularly in areas with high stunting prevalence and limited access to information.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by identity exploration and vulnerability to negative influences, with parenting playing a significant role in shaping behavior. This study investigates the relationship between parenting styles and violent behavior among adolescent inmates, focusing on two correctional institutions. The research employed a cross-sectional quantitative design, utilizing questionnaires to collect data from adolescent inmates in two prisons. The analysis focused on identifying the predominant parenting styles experienced by the inmates and the prevalence of violent behavior within this population. The findings revealed that authoritarian parenting was the most common style reported by respondents, and a high level of violent behavior was observed among the inmates. Statistical analysis (p-value=0.001) demonstrated a strong and significant correlation between authoritarian parenting and the occurrence of violent behavior, indicating that strict and inflexible parenting approaches contribute to the development of aggression in adolescents. These results underscore the importance of fostering positive parenting practices and providing targeted interventions in correctional settings to reduce violence among adolescents. Low educational attainment and external factors, such as peer influence and family instability, further exacerbate violent tendencies. Understanding the impact of parenting styles is essential for developing effective prevention and rehabilitation strategies for young offenders.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the older population worldwide has had significant consequences in the health care system, especially in preparing prospective nurses as health workers with positive attitudes towards older people. Unfortunately, students' attitudes have been reported to vary from positive attitudes to indications of ageism towards the older age group. This study aimed to identify and describe current findings regarding nursing students' attitudes toward older people in Southeast Asian countries. This study was conducted using a narrative review approach. The literature was sourced from international databases: PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCOhost, and ProQuest. Keywords included "attitude" AND "older people" OR "elderly" OR "older Adult” AND "nursing student". A total of 154 articles were found and there were 7 articles that met the inclusion criteria from five Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam. In general, nursing students in the five Southeast Asian countries have positive attitudes toward elderly health and are highly willing to become elderly nurses as their future career. The attitudes toward older people among nursing students are associated with the level of nursing students' knowledge about older people’s health, subjective norms towards older people, perceived behavioral control, good intentions, having learning experiences with project-based learning about older people’s health on campus, and having experience caring for older people during the education process. Incorporating more comprehensive Gerontic nursing content into the nursing education curriculum, including theoretical knowledge and direct practice opportunities, is imperative to increase students’ positive attitude toward older people.

Abstract

Nurses work conflict due to lack of balance between work and personal life in health services. Nurses, as the largest health workforce, should have a high work-life balance so they can provide quality service to patients. The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between work conflict and nurses' work life balance. This research design uses a cross-sectional approach. The population was 107 nurses and selected using cluster random sampling so that there were 81 nurses. Research data was taken using a questionnaire instrument. Research shows that almost all (97.5%) nurses experience high work conflict, and almost all (67.9%) experience low work-life balance. Based on the results of the analysis using the Spearman Rho test, the value of p = 0.000 (p <0.05) and value = -0.618, meaning that H1 is accepted so that there is a relationship between work conflict and work life balance among nurses. Organizational support and the role of superiors play an important role in reducing work conflict and increasing work life balance with minimal conflict occurring in the workplace.

Abstract

Stroke is a serious condition with a high risk of death and long-term disability. Hypertension is a major risk factor contributing significantly to both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This study aims to identify risk factors associated with these two types of stroke. A cross-sectional design was used involving 173 hospitalized stroke patients from February 15 to July 29, 2022. Data were collected from medical records using a checklist and analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with the Chi-square test. Independent variables included age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and stroke type; the dependent variable was the incidence of stroke. Most patients were over 55 years old (62.8%), male (56.1%), and had hypertension (82.7%). Ischemic stroke occurred more frequently (68.2%) than hemorrhagic stroke (31.8%). Hypertension was significantly associated with stroke type (p = 0.017), whereas age (p = 0.113), gender (p = 0.545), and diabetes mellitus (p = 0.778) showed no significant association. Hypertension was the most prominent risk factor for stroke, particularly among individuals over 55. Preventive measures are essential to control hypertension. Nurses play a vital role in educating patients about the importance of maintaining healthy blood pressure and can develop stroke prevention programs based on significant risk factors. These programs may help reduce the prevalence of stroke and its impact on mortality and long-term disability.

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis often experience heightened levels of anxiety due to complex treatment regimens and strict fluid intake restrictions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an audiovisual intervention in reducing anxiety levels among CKD patients. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed, involving 60 CKD patients selected through purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of a five-minute audiovisual presentation combining fluid restriction education and relaxation techniques. The independent variable was the audiovisual intervention, while the dependent variable was the patients' anxiety levels. Anxiety was assessed using the standardized Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire, administered both before and after the intervention. Data analysis was conducted using paired t-tests to compare mean anxiety scores, with a significance threshold set at p < 0,05. Prior to the intervention, the majority of participants (56.6%) experienced moderate anxiety, while 41,6% had mild anxiety, and 1.8% had severe anxiety. After the intervention, a notable shift occurred: 91,6% of patients reported mild anxiety, and only 8,4% experienced moderate anxiety, with no cases of severe anxiety. The average anxiety score significantly decreased from 11,03 to 7,57, resulting in a mean difference of 2,466 and a p-value of 0,000, indicating a statistically significant improvement. These findings suggest that audiovisual media are effective in reducing anxiety in hemodialysis patients by improving their understanding of fluid management and promoting relaxation. The engaging and accessible nature of the intervention empowered patients and helped alleviate emotional distress, supporting its use in clinical settings as a complementary therapeutic tool.

Abstract

Simulation-based education is a vital component of modern nursing education, providing a safe, controlled environment for students to develop clinical competencies. It bridges the gap between theory and practice by fostering experiential learning, critical thinking, and decision-making. This narrative review explores simulation strategies in nursing education, assesses educational outcomes, and identifies implementation challenges. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and ScienceDirect for articles published between 2020 and 2025. Studies discussing simulation strategies, outcomes, and barriers in undergraduate nursing education were included. Common simulation methods include high-fidelity manikins, standardized patients, virtual simulations, and hybrid models. These approaches enhance clinical skills, communication, teamwork, confidence, and knowledge retention. Simulation also supports reflective practice and safe error correction. However, barriers such as high costs, limited faculty expertise, time constraints, and inconsistent evaluation methods persist. Simulation enhances learning outcomes in nursing education but requires strategic integration, adequate resources, and faculty training. Addressing these challenges can maximize its impact and better prepare students for clinical practice. The outcome of this review highlights that well-implemented simulation strategies significantly improve nursing students’ clinical competence, critical thinking, and readiness for real-world healthcare environments, ultimately contributing to safer and higher-quality patient care.
