Abstract

Nagan Raya is a district with significant potential in freshwater aquaculture. Local economic development in this region can be advanced through existing community business groups. One such group is UPR Mina Mandiri, a fish farming business located in Beutong Sub-district, Nagan Raya. However, this group faces several challenges in the post-harvest period, including unstable fish prices during the peak harvest season leading to oversupply and price drops, limited knowledge of proper post-harvest handling techniques, and a lack of effective marketing strategies. This Community Service Program (PKM) aimed to enhance the added value of tilapia aquaculture through product downstreaming for the Mina Mandiri Group. The methods used in this PKM included presentations and hands-on demonstrations. Evaluation results indicated a significant increase in the participants' understanding, with an average improvement of 65-70% across all indicators. The downstreaming activities successfully resulted in two value-added products: frozen tilapia and fish nuggets, marketed under the brand names "NILO Frozen" and "NILO Nuggets." In conclusion, this PKM activity effectively improved the partners' skills in developing diversified products from their harvests.

Abstract

The Alas Strait is a marine area with abundant potential of octopus (Octopus cyanea), serving as a primary livelihood source for coastal communities in Seruni Mumbul and Seriwe Villages, East Lombok Regency. However, the lack of catch landing data has become a major challenge in achieving sustainable fisheries management. This activity aimed to enhance community capacity and participation in recording octopus landing data through a participatory approach. The method consisted of two main stages: socialization and technical training. The results showed an improvement in community understanding of the importance of fisheries data, as well as their ability to routinely record catch information, including the number, size, location, and time of landings. In addition, local collectors were involved as they have direct access to fishers’ catches. The data collected are valuable as a basis for management policies, such as the establishment of conservation zones and seasonal closures. This activity strengthened the role of the community as an essential part of the fisheries resource management system. The findings suggest that community involvement in octopus landing data collection directly supports the development of a participatory, adaptive, and sustainable management system.

Abstract

The agricultural sector is the third-largest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions among the five major emitting sectors. In 2022, Indonesia strengthened its national commitment through the Enhanced NDC 2022, targeting a 31.89% reduction in emissions under the unconditional scenario and 43.20% under the conditional scenario with international support. Without significant climate-mitigation actions in agriculture, the goals of the Paris Agreement cannot be achieved. This community service program (Thematic Community Service Program – Phase 2) was conducted in Boidu Village, North Bulango District, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, for 45 days using training and mentoring approaches to support the application of scientific and technological innovations. The activities also served as action research to promote Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) technologies, including agroforestry systems, water-harvesting techniques (biopores and rorak pits), and the decarbonization of rice straw and husks. This program successfully demonstrated the practical implementation of CSA as a strategy for climate-change mitigation and adaptation in the agricultural sector. Three key technologies—agroforestry, water harvesting (biopores and rorak), and straw/husk decarbonization—were shown to produce synergistic benefits. Agroforestry enhances ecosystem complexity and carbon stocks, water-harvesting techniques optimize hydrological cycles and reduce erosion, and the decarbonization of straw and husks converts agricultural waste into biochar, functioning as long-term carbon storage while improving soil fertility.

Abstract

Mangroves are a coastal resource with significant potential but are underutilized, particularly mangrove leaves, which are often wasted. This community service activity aims to assist residents of Tengket Village, Bangkalan Regency, in processing mangrove leaves into animal feed and organic fertilizer, supporting the blue economy concept. The methods used included outreach, training, hands-on practice, and mentoring in the use of a mangrove leaf shredding machine. The results of the activity demonstrated increased community knowledge and skills in mixing feed and fertilizer, their ability to use the machine, and their awareness of the sustainable use of local resources. The resulting products are animal feed made from mangrove leaves (Rhizophora apiculata; Rhizophora mucronata) and organic fertilizer, which have proven suitable for use and have created new business opportunities that can increase community income. Participants' responses also reflected high enthusiasm, despite challenges such as limited initial capital and limited technical knowledge. Overall, this program plays a role in increasing the economic independence of coastal communities while preserving the mangrove ecosystem. For the program's sustainability, additional support related to product marketing, machine maintenance, and collaboration with the government and the private sector is recommended.

Abstract

Sanitation remains a persistent challenge in elementary schools in Jayapura Regency, particularly in Waibu and Sentani Districts. Limited facilities combined with low awareness among teachers and students have negatively affected both health and learning quality. This community engagement program sought to strengthen elementary school teachers’ capacity to design Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based sanitation teaching materials through a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) framework. Thirty teachers from twelve partner schools participated in training, mentoring, and evaluation sessions. The initiative produced 20 draft teaching modules, of which 12 schools successfully applied them in classroom settings. Teachers’ competencies showed a marked improvement, as reflected in the increase of average scores from 76 (pre-test) to 89 (post-test). Classroom observations also demonstrated greater student engagement in sanitation practices, such as proper handwashing and waste disposal. These findings highlight that AI-based teaching materials are both feasible and effective for promoting contextual sanitation education in resource-constrained schools. Nevertheless, persistent challenges related to limited devices, unstable internet connectivity, and inadequate sanitation infrastructure underscore the need for extended mentoring and stronger support from local authorities.

Abstract

Household food security is a crucial issue influenced by limited land and food price fluctuations. Home garden utilization is considered an effective strategy to increase healthy food availability, reduce market dependence, and support family nutrition. Harapan Jaya Village, Semendawai Timur Sub-district, OKU Timur Regency has underutilized home gardens, thus requiring intervention through a community service program. The aim of this program was to improve the knowledge and skills of housewives in managing productive home gardens to support household food security. The method consisted of four main stages: preparation (problem identification, seed procurement, material development, and coordination), counseling (education on benefits and simple cultivation techniques), implementation (distribution of chili peppers, green eggplants, and purple eggplants accompanied by planting practice), and mentoring (regular monitoring together with students of KKN 24 Universitas Nurul Huda). The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding and skills in simple vegetable cultivation. Most of the distributed seedlings grew well and were utilized for family consumption. Some participants even expanded their gardens by planting additional vegetables such as spinach and kale. Active community participation and support from village officials were key success factors of the program. In conclusion, this program effectively encouraged the optimization of home gardens as a source of healthy family food. For sustainability, it is recommended to establish a Women Farmers Group (KWT) as a learning forum, provide training on product processing and marketing, and introduce crop diversification with simple technologies such as verticulture

Abstract

This Community Service Journal is underlain by the obstacles faced by students (lack of motivation to learn English, lack of awareness of the momentousness of English, and poor vocabulary skills) and teachers (limited teaching materials, textbooks submitted to the Ministry not matching those received, lack of English teaching techniques, and inability to create teaching materials using AI) at Talondo 1 Elementary School, Tamalea Village, Bonehau Subdistrict, Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This activity aims to elevate students' English vocabulary and determine their response to English vocabulary training using vocabulary lists and colouring pictures with AI images. The methods were mixed methods with an experimental and descriptive approach. The populations were 41 people, and the samples were 10 people. The sample collection technique employed purposive random sampling. The data collection techniques utilised observation, pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. The activity was carried out over 2 meetings. The activity method used pre-tests, training, post-tests, and interviews. The results of this study pointed out that learning English vocabulary using vocabulary lists and colouring pictures with AI images ameliorated students' English vocabulary. When comparing the pre-test results (28.51) with the post-test results (50.76), it can be deduced that the students' vocabulary enhanced significantly, even though the training only lasted for two sessions. Students were also very delighted with the combination of the vocabulary list technique and the colouring technique with AI images. It is hoped that this vocabulary teaching technique can be applied as a reference for teachers to teach and advance students' vocabulary.
