Abstract

Food self-sufficiency among coastal communities is an essential aspect in achieving sustainable food security. Bokori Village in Konawe Regency has significant potential for aquaculture development; however, current practices that rely on monoculture still create challenges, such as the accumulation of organic waste, declining water quality, and high vulnerability of cultured organisms to diseases. To address these issues, a multiculture approach known as Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) was applied in fixed-net cages (karamba tancap) as an innovative and environmentally friendly solution. This community engagement program aimed to enhance food self-sufficiency of fisher groups through the diversification of aquaculture products while maintaining aquatic ecosystem quality. The activities were carried out using a participatory approach involving two fisher groups, Usaha Bersama and Langkoe, whose main livelihoods include fishing, fish trading, and fish processing. The program stages consisted of socialization of the IMTA concept, construction of IMTA-based fixed-net cages, stocking of fish seeds and extractive organisms (seaweed, abalone, and sea cucumber), and technical assistance in maintenance. Evaluation was conducted through monitoring of water quality, survival rates of cultured organisms, as well as improvements in fishers’ knowledge and skills. The results showed that the IMTA system effectively utilized organic waste from fish culture as nutrients for extractive organisms, thus maintaining relatively stable water quality. Fisher groups achieved higher productivity through diversified harvests that included not only fish but also seaweed and other high-value species. Moreover, fishers demonstrated increased understanding of sustainable and integrated aquaculture practices. The application of IMTA in fixed-net cages in Bokori Village has proven to support food self-sufficiency of fisher groups, improve community welfare, and contribute significantly to the development of sustainable aquaculture systems in coastal areas.

Abstract

This community service program was designed to empower the Kelompok Tani Harapan Jaya (KTHJ) in Sukawali Village through the application of innovative packaging technology aimed at enhancing the added value of agricultural products. The main challenge faced by KTHJ is the limited shelf life, low quality, and weak competitiveness of horticultural products due to the use of simple packaging that does not align with modern market standards. The program was implemented through six key stages: problem identification, situational analysis, preparation, technology implementation, mentoring and monitoring, and sustainability planning. Activities were conducted on September 18, 2025, in the form of socialization and training, involving 20 members of KTHJ as direct beneficiaries. The outcomes demonstrate a significant increase in farmers’ knowledge and skills related to packaging materials, labeling techniques, and product quality standards. Pretest and posttest results revealed an improvement in packaging understanding from an average of 43.75% to 85.63%. This finding highlights the previous gap in farmers’ access to packaging technology knowledge and training. Furthermore, the establishment of a dedicated packaging unit within KTHJ provides a mechanism to manage packaging material inventory, monitor product quality, and coordinate marketing strategies. This unit ensures program sustainability and continuous benefits for the farmers’ group. Overall, the program successfully strengthened farmers’ capacity to improve product value and competitiveness in the agricultural supply chain.

Abstract

The Abdi Tani Farmers Group in Sungai Itik Village, Sungai Kakap District, Kubu Raya Regency, faces the problem of low quality acid sulfate soil and dependence on synthetic chemical fertilizers, so that rice productivity is not optimal. One solution offered is the use of biochar co-compost technology, a combination of rice husk biochar and water hyacinth compost that functions as an organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. This technology can increase soil pH, reduce the impact of pyrite toxicity, improve soil structure, and increase nutrient availability for plants. This Community Service Activity aims to increase the capacity of farmers in producing and applying biochar co-compost, as well as strengthening aspects of economic independence through marketing biochar co-compost products. The activity method includes observation, planning, implementation, application, and evaluation of activities. Knowledge evaluation is carried out through pre-tests and post-tests, while skill improvements are observed through direct practice. The activities carried out were training in making organic compost from water hyacinth, training in co-compost biochar technology, application of co-compost biochar in rice fields, packaging and branding of co-compost biochar products, as well as offline and online product marketing for co-compost biochar products. The results of the activity showed that participants' knowledge increased significantly, as evidenced by their high post-test scores. The Abdi Tani Farmers Group successfully produced biochar co-compost independently and applied it to rice paddies. Field observations showed improvements in soil physical condition and increased plant vigor after application. Furthermore, assistance with packaging, branding, and marketing resulted in packaged biochar co-compost products that began to be marketed locally and digitally. Biochar co-compost technology effectively improves soil quality and rice growth while strengthening the independence and economic capacity of farmer groups

Abstract

The Kumis Lele Group, located in Panjang Jiwo, Surabaya, produces a variety of processed fish products such as shredded fish, fish skin products, fish balls, seasoned catfish, nuggets, risoles, dumplings, spring rolls, and stuffed tofu. Despite this potential, the group faces two major challenges: (1) the inability to produce fish seeds continuously due to high mortality rates, and (2) inconsistent sales of processed fish products, which are either sold quickly or remain unsold for extended periods. This community service program aimed to (1) implement a water quality monitoring device measuring Potential of Hydrogen (pH) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO), with real-time data transmission to the partner leader’s mobile phone via the Telegram application, and (2) improve marketing development through enhanced product photography and training on branding, selling techniques, and marketing strategies. The activities included socialization of the program plan, training in photography, dissemination of marketing strategies, and training on the use of the pH and DO monitoring device. The results showed that the device functioned effectively, transmitting accurate data and improving fish seed survival, with production reaching 50,000 seeds within three months. In terms of marketing, nine high-quality product photos were produced and printed as stickers for both offline and digital promotion. Furthermore, participants’ knowledge of branding, selling techniques, and marketing strategies improved significantly, with average scores increasing from 38% to 82%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the program. In conclusion, this program successfully enhanced aquaculture productivity and strengthened the marketing capacity of the Kumis Lele Group

Abstract

Poetry is a form of reflective expression that plays an important role in conveying cultural values, healing the soul, and forming the collective identity of society. However, the perception of the general public currently still sees poetry as a complicated and exclusive art due to a rigid teaching approach and focus on structural aspects. This community service aims to open access and bring poetry closer to the general public. The poetry workshop was held offline in Pontianak involving participants from various age and professional backgrounds, in collaboration with the Pontianak Poetry Community. The method used is a community-based descriptive qualitative approach, emphasizing the active involvement of participants in the process of reading, writing, and reflecting on poetry, with a focus on personal experiences and emotional expression. The results show that poetry can be accessed and used as a medium for inclusive and reflective expression, is able to dismantle elitist stigma, and strengthens social connections between participants through a process of joint expression and appreciation. These findings strengthen the role of poetry as a means of aesthetic literacy that has the potential to increase expressive awareness and social cohesion in society.

Abstract

Livestock performance is influenced by genetics, the environment, and their interactions. The livestock commonly raised by the community are small ruminants, particularly sheep. Therefore, it is important to provide knowledge and information regarding sheep breeding stock selection. This activity was also based on regional regulations concerning sheep farming in East Kalimantan. The purpose of this program was to educate farmers in North Samarinda District on selecting quality breeding stock, thereby improving their understanding and awareness of good breeding practices. The community service activity (PKM) was conducted at the Community Hall of Lempake Subdistrict, North Samarinda District, Samarinda City. The implementation methods included introductions and opening, delivery of educational materials, and discussion through a question-and-answer session. Through this educational activity, it is expected that farmers will gain better awareness of the importance of breeding stock selection, adapt improved management practices after socialization and training, and increase active involvement from the farming community. Farmers in North Samarinda District became more aware of the importance of breeding stock selection based on SNI (Indonesian National Standard) criteria after attending the educational program at the Lempake Community Hall. Farmers also demonstrated positive behavioral changes in selecting sheep using SNI standards. The impact of education was reflected in improved health, body size, and qualitative traits of sheep, resulting in better performance. In addition, this activity received strong support from farmer associations and related institutions in applying breeding stock selection practices. Conclusion: To improve productivity, proper breeding stock selection and management, along with the application of supporting technologies, are necessary. Thus, sheep farming has the potential to become an important source of household income and help farmers expand their sheep farming businesses.
