Abstract

Wini Afiati's children's novel The Mystery of the Disappearance of the Turtle on Venu Island tells the story of a family who has just moved to the town of Kaiman, West Papua. The area is close to Venu Island. Venu Island is where the father character works as a marine conservation supervisor. However, there is an unexpected phenomenon, turtles that should be protected are stolen by a group of people. This study aims to describe (1) the causes of damage to the physical environment, (2) the human bond with the physical environment, and (3) the values of ecological wisdom in the children's novel Misteri Hilangnya Penyu di Pulai Venu by Wini Afiati. These objectives are closely related to Greg Garrard's concept of ecocriticism. The type of research used in this study is qualitative research with descriptive method. The data collection technique used in this research is reading and note-taking technique. The data analysis technique used is hermeutics. The hermeutic technique focuses on the text objectively. The results of this study are the causes of damage to the physical setting of the environment caused by irresponsible humans, human bonds that care about the surrounding environment, and ecological wisdom created in society.Keywords: ecocriticism, damage, bonding, wisdom, ecological.

Abstract

Problem research this the grammatical meaning on the poetry collection Perihal Gendis by Sapardi Djoko Damono as an alternative teaching material in high schools. The aim of this research is to describe the grammatical meaning of the poetry collection Perihal Gendis by Sapardi Djoko Damono as an alternative teaching material in high schools. The method in this research is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. This method is adapted to the research objective, namely to describe the types of grammatical meaning in the poetry collection Perihal Gendis by Sapardi Djoko Damono as an alternative teaching material in high school. The results of the research that there is carried out are available 60 quotes grammatical meaning on the poetry collection Perihal Gendis. The grammatical meaning consists of 34 quotations of the type of grammatical meaning of affixation, 14 quotations of the type of grammatical meaning of reduplication, and 12 quotations of the type of grammatical meaning of composition. From three types grammatical meaning most found type affixation gramatical meaning. Based on the objectives of learning Indonesian language and literature, this collection of poetry can be used as an alternative teaching material in high school. This collection of poems Perihal Gendis by Sapardi Djoko Damono meets the criteria for teaching materials and provides positive benefits for students. Teachers can use collection of poems Perihal Gendis by Sapardi Djoko Damono as an alternative for learning grammatical meaning. Based on linguistic, psychological and cultural background aspects of students, this collection of poetry can be used as an alternative teaching material for learning Indonesian in high school.

Abstract

Masalah nilai budaya pada siswa menjadi semakin kompleks di era globalisasi dan modernisasi. Erosi nilai-nilai budaya tradisional terjadi ketika nilai-nilai lokal seperti gotong royong, kekeluargaan, dan penghormatan terhadap yang lebih tua tergeser oleh nilai-nilai individualistis dan materialistis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap nilai-nilai budaya yang ada dalam novel Hati Suhita karya Khilma Anis sebagai bahan alternatif pembelajaran di tingkat sekolah menengah atas. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan antropologi sastra, yang berfokus pada analisis sikap dan perilaku yang mencerminkan budaya dalam karya sastra. Hasil penelitian ditemukan terdapat nilai budaya hubungan manusia dengan manusia, yaitu nilai kepatuhan, nilai kepedulian, nilai kasih sayang, nilai persahabatan, nilai motivasi, nilai empati, nilai kesetiaan.

Abstract

As a cultural product, literary works are related to the environment in which they are born. One of the things meant is related to ecological issues. Poetry as part of literary works can reflect ecological problems. This study aims to explore ecological elements in the poetry collection Dongeng Pohon Pisang by Achmad Sultoni. The form of this research is qualitative descriptive with a literary ecology approach. The poetry collection Dongeng Pohon Pisang by Achmad Sultoni is the source of data in this study. Words, sentences, and phrases in the poetry collection Dongeng Pohon Pisang by Achmad Sultoni that contain ecological elements are the data in this study. To obtain data, this study uses data collection techniques in the form of document or library studies. The data that has been obtained is then analyzed using an interactive analysis model. The results of this study indicate that the poetry collection Dongeng Pohon Pisang by Achmad Sultoni is very thick with ecological nuances and themes. The ecological nuance is reinforced by the ecocentrism attitude presented by the author.

Abstract

In the current era of globalization, character education is encouraged in learning activities, including learning Indonesian. It was not without cause. Lack of respect, lack of mutual assistance, language impoliteness, and other negative attitudes are problems and the root of suppressing the character of education in educational institutions. It means that language learning is not only about being able to communicate verbally or in writing; language learning also needs to question the character of the language user, namely the language learner himself, as the target. For this reason, it is essential for language teaching to instil character values ​​in language learning materials. This research aims to describe the local wisdom values ​​of the Lampung region and try to insert them into Indonesian language learning materials, especially regarding expository text material for class XI high school students. This qualitative research describes the local wisdom values ​​of the Lampung region and tries to insert these values ​​into Indonesian language learning. Data collection techniques were carried out using literature studies and interviews. The results of the research study show that the local wisdom values ​​of the Lampung region can be included in Indonesian language learning materials in exposition text discussions and can also have implications for the formation of students' character.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the retention of phonemes in abbreviations and acronyms in the book Makan Kapal Selam by Samsudin Adlawi. The research method used is qualitative. The data source for this study is the book Makan Kapal Selam by Samsudin Adlawi. The research data consists of sentences containing acronyms or abbreviations. Data collection techniques involve intensive reading of the book as the research object and analyzing the abbreviations and acronyms based on retaining the first, second, or third phoneme of each word. The results show there are 4 abbreviations and 5 acronyms. The abbreviations retain the first phoneme of each word, forming OK, SPBU, DPPU, and BPMIGAS. The acronyms retain the first, second, or third phoneme of each word, forming Corona, pamer paha, ketandok susu, Pertamina, and SIM. Abbreviations and acronyms with familiar phonemes tend to be accepted and understood more quickly. Therefore, the retention of certain phonemes facilitates the acceptance of these abbreviations and acronyms in society and enhances communication effectiveness.

Abstract

Literary works never stand alone and are born from a situation of emptiness. However, literature is a connectedness of inter-discourse dialogue that lives in a cultural and socio-historical context. One work that is rich in such connectedness is the novel Jakarta Sebelum Pagi by Ziggy Zezsyazeoviennazabrizkie. Of course, Julia Kristeva's post-structuralist theory of intertextuality, which views text as part of a network of inter-discourses and permutations of other texts, is a relevant framework for analyzing this work. This research is important to see how contemporary Indonesian literature is connected both explicitly and implicitly with a wider network of texts, especially western literary works that can extensively describe how inter-textual dialogue is cross-cultural. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis techniques. The results of the analysis show that this novel builds dynamic intertextual relationships with various western literary works, especially through aspects of characterization, character development, representation of urban life, and social criticism. In general, this research shows that literature in forming narratives and meanings is always transformative, dynamic, and interactive across socio-historical and cultural boundaries.

Abstract

Graduation speech is one of the particular speeches that graduates or teachers in the graduating field are required to give (Assidiqi & Cahyono, 2023). In this case, Taylor Swift is trusted to give the commencement speech because she is the recipient of the Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree awarded by NYU (New York University) in appreciation of her outstanding achievements in the music industry and her lasting influence on popular culture. Therefore, this study aims to analyze textual metafunction realization in the speech, also examining the thematic progression that make clauses coherent and cohesive. This research employes descriptive qualitative method within Systemic Functional Linguistics framework. From the analysis that has been done, 341 clauses were found in Taylor Swift's Graduation Speech 2022. The most dominant theme type is topical theme, which is found in every clause in the speech. Following by textual theme, which is found in 115 clauses. The least theme type found is interpersonal theme, which is only found in 15 clauses. This research also found the use of Thematic progression pattern in Taylor Swift's graduation speech. Three main patterns of thematic progression namely constant theme pattern, linear/zig-zag pattern, multiple rheme pattern are used in the speech.

Abstract

This analysis examines the connection between social aspects and the characterization of Frodo Baggins in The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. In novels, as in any other form of art, the storyline and characters are intricately woven together. This work of research will show how social issues affect Frodo's evolution as a character. The analysis have been found using descriptive qualitative approach, which means that out of 51 instances of characterization associated with determination, 12 were direct and 39 were indirect. Furthermore, the inquiry reveals that while 42 instances where a connection of characterization of Frodo and the main theme of adventure is found, for 9 of the instances direct portrayal and for 33 instances indirect portraying of determination fighting overwhelming odds are did. Thus, this study affirms that Frodo's characterization is deeper than adventure, but rather courage and sense of responsibility. Frodo's journey depict not only the struggle to triumph, but also depicts the inner turmoil, altruism, and grit that is embedded in the violence of searching for the self. This analysis assists in further understanding of Frodo Baggins as a reluctant hero, supporting the Claim that he is a depiction of human struggle against adversities.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of code mixing in English language teaching in the YouTube channel. The main purpose of this research is to find out the use of code mixing applied by teachers in English literacy teaching videos on the Ruang Guru YouTube channel. This research method is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collected through video transcription from Ruang Guru YouTube channel and analyzed based on Musyken's (2000) classification which includes Insertion, Alternation, and Congruent Lexicalization. The results showed that Insertion is the most dominant type of code mixing with a percentage of (51.67%), followed by Alternation (45.00%) and Congruent Lexicalization (3.33%). In addition, the use of code mixing by teachers as a teaching strategy is divided into two main strategies, namely: English word repetition and translation of words or sentences into Indonesian. The contribution of this research is to provide new insights into how code mixing can be used as an effective teaching strategy in a digital context and optimize the use of code mixing so that content becomes more accessible and comprehensible to diverse audiences.
