Abstract

Mental health issues among university students have become a growing concern, with Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) emerging as a significant psychological challenge in the digital age. FoMO is characterized by anxiety over missing valuable experiences, often exacerbated by excessive social media engagement, and has been linked to decreased well-being, sleep disturbances, and reduced academic focus. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of group counseling using the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) approach in reducing FoMO among university students. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed, involving eight students from the Guidance and Counseling Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tanjungpura University, selected through purposive sampling based on high FoMO scores. The intervention consisted of five REBT-based group counseling sessions, each lasting 60–90 minutes, focusing on identifying and restructuring irrational beliefs underlying FoMO-related behaviors. The Fear of Missing Out scale, developed by Przybylski et al. (2013), was administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results showed a significant reduction in FoMO levels following the intervention, with a Z value of -2.524 and a p-value of 0.012 (p < 0.05), indicating that REBT-based group counseling effectively reduces FoMO. These findings suggest that REBT group counseling can serve as a valuable intervention for addressing FoMO and improving students' psychological well-being. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting REBT as a therapeutic approach for digital-age psychological challenges and highlights the importance of integrating such interventions into university counseling services. Abstract

This study developed and validated the Self-Control, FOMO, and Phubbing scales for high school students using a psychometric approach. Content validity was assessed through Aiken's V, which showed a CVR greater than 0.78, while empirical validity testing identified 44 of 56 items as valid. The reliability test yielded a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.90 (highly reliable), and the data met the assumptions of normality (Shapiro–Wilk: Self-Control, p = 0.437; FOMO, p = 0.257; Phubbing, p = 0.123) and homogeneity (Levene's, p = 0.221). EFA analysis yielded a KMO of 0.654, with five factors explaining 70.20% of the variance. CFA produced a model fit that was close to good (CFI = 0.851; TLI = 0.826; RMSEA = 0.0961; SRMR = 0.0918). The study's results concluded that this scale is valid, reliable, and capable of accurately measuring phubbing tendencies. The findings confirm that self-control plays a crucial mediating role in reducing FOMO-induced phubbing. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an instrument that has been comprehensively validated and culturally adapted for the Indonesian adolescent context, unlike previous studies that only adapted foreign scales without thorough validity testing. This scale can be used as a diagnostic tool and a basis for preventive interventions to enhance digital literacy and mitigate the negative effects of excessive digital engagement on adolescents. Abstract

School counselor leadership plays a crucial role in strengthening guidance and counseling services, yet there is currently no standardized instrument to measure school counselor leadership skills in Indonesia. This study aims to develop and test the validity and reliability of a scale to assess school counselors’ leadership skills. The instrument was developed through item writing and review based on the Three-Skill Approach, then analyzed using the Rasch Model.  Data were collected from 225 school counselors spread across Aceh Province, Indonesia, with diverse demographic backgrounds. The results indicated that the scale met the assumption of unidimensionality, with 25% of the raw variance explained by the measure. The four-point response scale functioned adequately, and 13 misfit items were identified from 126 items. The scale showed high person and item reliability (above 0.80) with adequate separation indices. Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analysis by gender revealed that most items functioned equivalently, and only 14 items were identified as biased. Overall, the scale demonstrates strong psychometric properties and potential use for assessment and professional development. Further studies are recommended to conduct external validation in broader contexts. Keywords: school counselor, leadership skills, instrument development, validation, rasch model

Abstract

Modern dynamics have contributed to a significant decline in empathy among adolescents; however, the potential of local wisdom as a foundation for guidance and counseling interventions remains empirically under-explored, particularly in the context of Mandar culture. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group guidance based on Siwaliparri values, a Mandar cultural concept emphasizing togetherness and equality, in enhancing student empathy. Employing a Pre-Experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design, the research involved eight students (N=8) from SMA Negeri 1 Majene, selected via simple random sampling based on low empathy score criteria. Data were collected using an Empathy Scale (30 items, a=0.80) and analyzed using a Paired Sample t-test. Results indicated a significant increase in students’ empathy, shifting from the “low” category (Mean=70.1, SD=6.4) to the “moderate” category (Mean=86.3, SD=5.2), with t = 10.645 and p <0.001. The effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.78) demonstrates a very large practical impact of the intervention. In conclusion, Siwaliparri-based interventions are highly effective in increasing empathy, offering a culturally responsive framework for school counselors in Mandar and similar cultural contexts to address the empathy crisis among adolescents while preserving Mandar’s local wisdom. Abstract

Test anxiety is a major concern in higher education due to its negative impact on students’ academic performance and psychological well-being. However, comparative studies across academic disciplines in the Indonesian context remain limited. This study aimed to examine differences in test anxiety between Psychology and Non-Psychology students. A quantitative comparative design was employed, involving 280 undergraduate students (140 Psychology and 140 Non-Psychology) selected through convenience sampling. Test anxiety was measured using a scale adapted from Brooks et al. (2015), which demonstrated high reliability (α = .92). Data were analyzed using an Independent Samples t-Test. The results showed that Levene’s test indicated unequal variances (F = 15.463, p < .05); therefore, the unequal-variance assumption was applied when interpreting the t-test results. A significant difference in test anxiety was found between groups (t = 4.651, p < .001), with Psychology students reporting higher anxiety levels (M = 209.69) than Non-Psychology students (M = 198.34). The effect size was moderate (Cohen’s d = .56). These findings highlight the importance of discipline-sensitive assessment practices and targeted psychological interventions, particularly for Psychology students. Abstract

Educational migration in Indonesia is driven by disparities in the distribution of high-quality higher education institutions, but the specific mechanisms by which students from outside Java adjust to self-regulated learning (SRL) in the Indonesian context, which is fraught with pressure and collectivist norms, have not been explored in depth. This study aims to examine the role of adjustment to self-regulated learning among students from outside Java Island with a sample size (N=160) using a correlational design. The research instrument was developed based on Schneider’s and Zimmerman's theory, validated through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and McDonald's Omega (ω) reliability test. Given the abnormal data distribution based on the Shapiro-Wilk test, statistical analysis used Spearman's Rho non-parametric technique. The findings showed a significant positive relationship between the two variables (ρ = 0.470, p < 0.001) with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.221. These results indicate that self-adjustment accounts for 22.1% of the variation in self-regulated learning, making it an important predictor but not the only factor. The remaining variance of 77.9% indicates the need for a multifactorial approach that considers social support and self-efficacy. The practical implications of this study emphasize the urgency of holistic counseling services in universities to strengthen migrant students’ emotional stability as the foundation for independent learning. Abstract

This study was motivated by the increasing prevalence of academic stress among students at an Islamic Junior High School in Padang. Although Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has been widely demonstrated to be effective across various educational and clinical settings worldwide, its application within faith-based educational environments, particularly Islamic madrasas in Indonesia, remains limited and underexplored. Accordingly, this study offers a novel contribution by examining the implementation of MBSR in the context of Islamic lower secondary education. The research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of MBSR in reducing students’ academic stress levels. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 31 eighth-and ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling based on high levels of academic stress. The MBSR intervention was delivered through structured sessions incorporating core components such as body scan, sitting meditation, and mindful breathing. Academic stress was measured using a Likert-scale questionnaire that demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability (adequate Cronbach’s Alpha). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The findings revealed a statistically significant reduction in academic stress (Z = −4.862; p < 0.001) with a large effect size. These results support the integration of mindfulness-based interventions into school counseling services within faith-based educational settings. Keywords: academic stress, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), psychological intervention

Abstract

The intricacy of modern parenting dilemmas necessitates innovative solutions that cater to parents' requirements. Incorporating the principle of mindful parenting into a digital medium provides a means to improve parenting proficiency. This study sought to develop and assess the validity, feasibility, and efficacy of a web-based Mindful Parenting program intended to enhance parenting competence. This research and development approach used the ADDIE model, producing a web-based mindful parenting program. The participants consisted of 112 parents and expert judges in media, language, and family psychology. Experts said Web-Based Mindful Parenting was feasible with content enrichment and accessibility suggestions. The study measured mindful parenting practices using the IM-P scale (31 items, α = .953). A summative evaluation using a one-group pretest–posttest design and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test yielded Z = −8.32, p < 0.001, with a Cohen’s d value of 0.83, indicating that the intervention effectively improved mindful parenting practices. These findings contribute to the literature by integrating the concept of mindful parenting into a digital platform designed to accommodate parents’ needs across stages of family development. Practically, the program enables parents to acquire parenting skills without face-to-face interaction. The program provides psychologists and counselors with a framework for incorporating online services into their professional practice. Future research may add support services and programs to meet the complexity of parenting needs. Abstract

Most of the childfree research remains focused on Western contexts, so studies in collectivist and pronatalist societies, such as Indonesia, remain limited. This study aims to explore the experiences and life satisfaction of childfree individuals in Indonesia. This study seeks to expand the literature by examining how childfree individuals interpret life satisfaction amid social norms that emphasize the importance of having children. This study uses a phenomenological qualitative approach, conducting in-depth interviews with five participants and employing thematic analysis to uncover the life experiences of childfree individuals in Indonesia. The findings suggest that the decision not to have children affects participants' life satisfaction, and that the presence of children negatively affects their lives. The domains of life satisfaction identified in this study were relationships with partners, finances, and leisure time. Freedom in careers, hobbies, and activities contributes to participants' life satisfaction. These findings provide an alternative perspective on pronatal assumptions that link the existence of children to family happiness and offer implications for counseling practices when accompanying childfree individuals living in societies with strong pronatal values. Abstract

Abstract The rising number of young people in Indonesia who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training), especially among vocational high school graduates, indicates that the transition from education to employment remains difficult. While worldwide research indicates that career interventions might improve Career Decision Self-Efficacy (CDSE), empirical evidence in Indonesian vocational school settings is scarce, particularly concerning short-term, module-based programs. This study evaluated how well a structured career planning intervention raised the Career Decision Self-Efficacy (CDSE) of vocational high school students. A comparison group was added to the quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design to put the findings in context. The experimental group consisted of fifty students, while the comparison group consisted of fifty-eight. The intervention comprised a singular five hour career planning session. Data were examined via paired sample and independent sample t-tests, with effect sizes computed by Cohen’s d. CDSE scores in the experimental group increased slightly from pretest (M = 119.34) to posttest (M = 122.52); however, the improvement was not statistically significant (p = 0.439) and indicated a small effect size (d = 0.11). No significant differences were seen between groups at the posttest. These results show that a single intensive session is insufficient to significantly increase career decision-making self-efficacy, which advances research on short-term career interventions. The results emphasize the need for continuous, multi-session, hands-on school-based career programs to improve the career readiness of vocational students.
