Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of critical thinking as a predictor of mental health among university students. A total of 360 undergraduate students in Indonesia participated, selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected both online through Google Forms and offline through direct distribution of questionnaires. Simple linear regression analysis was conducted after meeting the assumptions of normality, linearity, and homoscedasticity. The results indicated that critical thinking significantly predicted students' mental health (F = 12.160, p < 0.05, B = −0.899, t = −3.487). However, the strength of the relationship was relatively weak (R = 0.181, R² = 3.3%), indicating that critical thinking explains only a small proportion of the variance in mental health while other factors contribute more substantially. The negative regression coefficient indicates that higher critical thinking ability is associated with lower mental health problem scores. These findings suggest that critical thinking plays a role in predicting students’ mental health, though its contribution is limited. Therefore, universities should integrate critical thinking training into curricula as part of mental health promotion in higher education environments. Abstract

The high academic burden within the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) environment poses a critical risk of triggering academic burnout and decreasing students' self-efficacy. This study examined the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) group counseling integrated with Islamic spiritual values, specifically the Takwa, Ikhtiar, and Tawakkal (MTIT) model compared to conventional MI in enhancing self-efficacy and reducing burnout. Employing a 2x2 repeated-measures factorial experimental design, this research involved 24 MTS Al-Asror students (12 male, 12 female) identified with high academic stress. Mixed ANOVA revealed that both interventions significantly improved psychological outcomes over time (p < .001, partial eta squared = .554), with a significant main effect of time on burnout (F(2, 40) = 41.855, p < .001). However, Spiritually-Infused MI demonstrated significantly greater efficacy over conventional MI in accelerating burnout reduction, yielding a significant main effect for counseling technique (F = 3.421, p = .042, partial eta squared = .146) along with a sharper upward trend in self-efficacy. Furthermore, gender did not significantly moderate the clinical effectiveness of either approach (F = 0.814, p = .451, partial eta squared = .039), demonstrating that the therapeutic benefit is universal across biological groups. This study concludes that strengthening transcendental coping mechanisms within group counseling services is crucial for students in faith-based educational institutions to foster holistic academic resilience Keywords: academic burnout, group counseling, islamic values, motivational interviewing,  self-efficacy

Abstract

Verbal bullying is a persistent problem in secondary schools and frequently produces psychological distress, emotional insecurity, and elevated stress among adolescent victims. Although various counseling interventions have been implemented to address bullying-related stress, evidence regarding psychodynamic group counseling remains limited. This study examined the effectiveness of psychodynamic group counseling in reducing stress among high school students who experienced verbal bullying in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. A quantitative pre-experimental study using a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted with eight Grade X students selected through purposive sampling based on their experiences as repeated verbal bullying victims. Stress levels were measured using a validated 25-item perceived stress questionnaire before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of structured psychodynamic group counseling sessions that emphasized exploring unconscious emotional conflicts, defense mechanisms, interpersonal relationships, self-awareness, and emotional resolution within a supportive group environment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test with a significance level of 0.05. The findings revealed a significant reduction in participants’ stress levels following the intervention, with the mean score decreasing from 86.50 (SD = 7.19) before counseling to 80.50 (SD = 7.33) after counseling, t(7) = 3.21, p = .015. All participants demonstrated decreased stress scores after the intervention. These findings indicate that psychodynamic group counseling is a promising school-based intervention for alleviating stress among verbal bullying victims and strengthening adolescents’ emotional well-being, although larger controlled studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness. Abstract

Academic procrastination is a common problem among junior high school students and may negatively affect academic performance, psychological well-being, and responsibility in completing academic tasks. This study examined the effectiveness of Islamic-based self-management counseling incorporating the amanah dimension in reducing academic procrastination among junior high school students. The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design. The researchers selected seven students with high levels of academic procrastination using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a 20-item academic procrastination scale developed based on the amanah dimension and validated through expert review and pre-testing. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test to determine differences in students' academic procrastination before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant reduction in academic procrastination after implementing Islamic-based self-management counseling, with an Asymp. Sig. value of 0.031. The mean pretest score was 118, which decreased to 84 in the posttest. These findings indicate that the intervention effectively reduced students' academic procrastination. This study's novelty lies in integrating the Islamic value of amanah into self-management counseling, emphasizing responsibility, integrity, discipline, and personal accountability. This approach offers a culturally relevant counseling intervention to address academic procrastination among junior high school students.
