Abstract

Parental silent treatment represents a form of relational withdrawal that may shape children’s experiences of communication and interpersonal relationships. However, limited research has examined how repeated parental silent treatment is perceived to influence children’s interpersonal communication development within family contexts. This study aims to analyze the perceived impact of parental silent treatment on children’s interpersonal communication development. A qualitative case study design was employed involving three female participants aged 18–20 years who had experienced silent treatment from their parents during childhood or adolescence. Participants were selected purposively based on predetermined criteria and resided in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings revealed four interconnected themes: restricted parent–child communication, parental silent treatment as a pattern of emotional withdrawal, interpersonal and emotional consequences, and passive responses accompanied by expectations for healthier communication. Participants described one-way or minimal parental communication and experiences of being ignored, treated coldly, or excluded from interaction following anger or disagreement. These experiences were associated with difficulties expressing feelings, reluctance to disclose personal problems, fear of rejection, anxiety, reduced self-confidence, and perceived relational distance. Some participants also reported passive responses and recognition of similar communication patterns in subsequent relationships. The findings highlight the importance of reciprocal, empathic, and emotionally validating parent–child communication. Abstract

Communication interactions among students in Islamic Senior High Schools in Pekanbaru are often less conducive, as reflected in behaviors such as mocking peers, dominating discussions, and showing limited respect for differing opinions during group guidance sessions. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an Islamic-values-based group guidance model to improve students’ communication interactions. The research used a Research and Development design based on the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The developed product, the Bimbingan Kelompok Berbasis Integrasi Nilai Islam (BKBINI), was tested on 67 students from two Islamic Senior High Schools. Data were collected through pretest–posttest questionnaires, observations, interviews, and focus group discussions, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and effect size analysis. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ communication interactions after implementing the BKBINI model (tcount > ttable, α = 0.05), with an effect size of 0.69 indicating a medium practical impact. These findings demonstrate that integrating Islamic values into group guidance effectively enhances respectful, participatory, and ethical communication among students. Abstract

Vocational high schools in Indonesia provide students with specific vocational competencies that are expected to support their future learning and career pathways. However, the implementation of the zoning educational policy may limit students’ opportunities to access their preferred study programs because vocational programs and educational facilities are not evenly distributed across schools. This study aims to analyze the impact of the zoning system on vocational high school students’ learning-career pathways in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in three public vocational high schools. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving students and guidance and counseling teachers. The data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis process and source triangulation was applied to strengthen the credibility of the findings. The findings indicate both positive and negative impacts of the zoning policy. Positively, zoning reduces the dichotomy between favorite and non-favorite schools and enables students to attend schools closer to their homes, potentially reducing transportation and educational costs. Negatively, unequal distribution of facilities, infrastructure, and vocational study programs restricts students’ opportunities to select programs aligned with their interests and abilities. Consequently, some students experience inappropriate major selection and non-linear learning-career pathways. The findings highlight the need for more equitable educational resources and stronger career guidance to support informed student choices. Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of student career problems and their implications for career counseling services in higher education. The research involved 94 undergraduate students of the Guidance and Counseling Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tasikmalaya (UMTAS), who completed the AUM Umum (General Problem Inventory) on April 30, 2025. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach by analyzing the frequency and percentage of students experiencing career-related problems in the Career and Employment (KDP) domain. The results revealed that the average level of career problems was high (47.3%), indicating that most students experienced significant difficulties in preparing for their future careers. The dominant issues included anxiety about unemployment after graduation (75.53%), doubt about the ability to work independently (79.79%), fear of losing job competition (70.21%), and lack of knowledge about job fields (69.15%). In contrast, issues related to family support and personal relationships were relatively low. Categorically, 29.8% of students were in the high problem category, 52.1% in the medium category, and 18.1% in the low category. These findings indicate that career-related anxiety, lack of self-efficacy, and insufficient information about the world of work are prominent problems among students. The study highlights the urgency of integrating career guidance programs within university counseling services to better support students’ transition from education to employment. Abstract

Bullying among university students remains a significant interpersonal problem, yet limited attention has been given to the psychological needs underlying students’ engagement in bullying behavior. This study aimed to explore how bullying behavior may function in relation to Glasser’s five basic psychological needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun. A qualitative phenomenological design using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was employed. An initial bullying screening was administered to 315 university students, from whom nine students who engaged in bullying behavior were selected as qualitative informants. Data were collected through individual interviews and analyzed using the six-stage IPA procedure, followed by theory-informed interpretation based on Glasser’s Choice Theory. The findings identified five forms of bullying: physical, verbal, psychological, relational/emotional, and cyberbullying, while no sexual bullying was reported. Love and belonging were reflected in two participants, survival in one, power in two, and freedom in two, whereas fun was evident across all nine participants. These findings suggest that bullying may function as a maladaptive strategy for obtaining social attention, acceptance, protection, interpersonal dominance, autonomy, or enjoyment. The study highlights the importance of understanding the subjective functions of bullying rather than focusing solely on its observable forms. Counseling interventions based on Choice Theory and Reality Therapy may help students identify underlying needs and develop healthier strategies for fulfilling them without harming others. Abstract

The impact of online learning during COVID-19 is still being felt today, with the emergence of mental health issues. Individual mental health issues due to the inability to absorb information from ever-changing technology cause individuals to experience digital stress. Digital stress arises from an individual's inability to interact with technology in a healthy way. This study aimed to identify the digital stress profile at State Islamic Senior High School (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri) in Magetan and differences in digital stress between males and females. This quantitative study used a survey design to determine students' digital stress profile and differences between males and females. A sample of 298 students was obtained using stratified random sampling. Data collection used a digital stress scale, and data analysis used descriptive analysis and a Wilcoxon test. The results showed that students' digital stress levels were in the high, even very high, category, with approval anxiety being more frequently experienced by students than fear of missing out. However, the study found no differences in digital stress between males and females. Keywords: approval anxiety, digital resilience, digital stress, gender, Islamic senior high school

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Indonesian School Literacy Movement (GLS) policy within a marginalized educational context, focusing on Muhammadiyah Lamahala Jaya High School in East Flores Regency. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study collected data through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving school principals, teachers, librarians, and students. The findings reveal that the school has adopted the national mandate through structured activities such as 15-minute pre-class reading sessions, literacy team formation, and the development of reading corners. While these initiatives have fostered initial improvements in students' reading interest and literacy engagement, significant systemic barriers persist. Key challenges include acute shortages of diverse reading materials, inadequate library infrastructure, limited teacher training in literacy instruction, and the absence of robust internal school regulations to sustain the program. The study highlights the critical gap between national policy aspirations and on-the-ground realities in remote regions, underscoring the necessity for context-sensitive adaptation, enhanced resource allocation, and stronger multi-stakeholder collaboration. It concludes that for literacy policies to be effective in underserved areas, they must transition from top-down implementation to cultivating an organic, school-wide literacy ecosystem supported by committed leadership and community involvement. Abstract

This study explores the role of running in enhancing mental health and motivation in Indonesia using a qualitative phenomenological approach. Given the limited research in the Indonesian context, this study aims to fill an empirical and theoretical gap by examining how running contributes to stress reduction, emotional well-being, and motivation among adults. A total of 20 participants aged 24–40 who had been running regularly for at least three months were selected through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect in-depth data on psychological, motivational, and lifestyle changes resulting from running. Thematic analysis revealed four major themes: improvement of mental health through stress and anxiety reduction, enhancement of emotional balance and mood, increased motivation and self-discipline, and the importance of social support in group running activities. Participants reported feeling mentally clearer, emotionally balanced, and more motivated to sustain their fitness routines. In particular, running in groups provided strong social support and accountability, reinforcing consistency and a sense of belonging. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge in sports psychology and guidance and counseling by highlighting the therapeutic potential of running to promote mental health and motivation in collectivist cultural settings such as Indonesia. The findings underscore the importance of integrating community-based physical activity programs into mental health promotion efforts. Future studies are recommended to explore the long-term psychological mechanisms and cultural factors that influence participation in running. Abstract

Excessive gadget use among adolescents has raised concerns regarding academic engagement, emotional regulation, and social interaction. School-based guidance and counseling may help students develop healthier digital habits through structured behavioral self-management. This study explores implementing group counseling using self-management techniques among junior high school students who use gadgets excessively in three schools in Palu City, Indonesia. A qualitative multi-site case study design was employed, informed by Bandura’s self-regulation theory and Yalom and Leszcz’s framework of therapeutic factors in group interventions. Participants comprised guidance and counseling teachers, students aged 13–15 years, and parents. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Source and methodological triangulation were used to strengthen the credibility of the findings. The findings indicate that self-management-based group counseling gave students opportunities to recognize gadget-use habits, reflect on their behavior, and establish personal behavioral commitments. Participants reported changes in gadget-use patterns, learning focus, and social interaction. These changes varied across schools and were influenced by parental involvement, peer support, and institutional conditions. The study highlights the potential of integrating self-management techniques into group counseling to support adolescents’ digital self-regulation. Further longitudinal or mixed-methods research is needed to examine the sustainability and effectiveness of these practices. Keywords: group counseling, self-management, gadgets, junior high school students
