Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of moderate and high exercise intensity on VO2max, body mass index (BMI), and percent of body fat in obese adolescents. Thirty obese adolescents were randomly assigned to control, moderate intensity training (MIT), and high intensity interval training (HIIT) groups. The MIT and HIIT groups exercised by using treadmill for 40 minutes, three times per week during six weeks of intervention. Exercise on the subject of MIT and HIIT groups began with a five minute warm up by running on treadmill at 50-55% HRmax. After warming up, the MIT group ran for 30 minutes at 65-70% HRmax. Meanwhile, HIIT group should run for two minutes at 90-95% HRmax with one minute active recovery at 55% HRmax between each interval for a total of 30 minutes. Exercise ended with five minutes of cooling down at 50-55% HRmax. The results showed that HIIT group significantly had higher VO2max than MIT group (p<0.05). A signification reduction in body mass index and percent of body fat was observed for MIT and HIIT groups in comparison to the control group after the intervention (p<0.05). In conclusion, HIIT over six weeks increased VO2max higher than MIT. HIIT and MIT are equally effective in reducing BMI and percent of body fat in obese adolescents. Keywords: exercise intensity, nutritional status, percent of body fat, VO2max

Abstract

The aim of this study was to estimate the economic loss and cost of intervention due to iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in Indonesia. The data in this research were secondary data from several related institution. Potential economic losses due to IDA can be estimated by calculating the economic value of cognitive impairment, reduced work productivity, and increased maintenance costs due to low birth weight. The economic value of cognitive impairment estimated by multiplying the wages, prevalence and population. The economic value of decreased productivity of labour was estimated by multiplying the wages of non-agricultural, agricultural wages, prevalence, population and labor force participation rate (LFPR). The result of this research are the total amount of potential national loss due to IDA approximately Rp 62.02 trillion per year (US$5.08 billion) representing 0.711% of the country’s GDP and the cost for intervention approximately Rp 1.95 billion per year (US$150 milion). The cost of intervention is less than the economic loss. Keywords: cost of intervention, economic loss, iron deficiency anemia

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of catfish oil supplementation on the LDL and total cholesterol levels in the elderly. Experimental design with randomized controlled trial (RCT) was  used in this study. Subjects were divided into two groups, the first group (A1) was given catfish oil 1,000 mg per day, while the second group (A2) was not given the oil, it was called a control. The lipid profile measurement was performed before and after the intervention. Catfish oil consumed daily by treatment group for 60 days and then the effect on the lipid profile was evaluated. Total cholesterol and LDL in the two groups did not differ significantly. However, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol of the treatment group had lower scores than the control group. In addition, the LDL levels in the treatment group were below maximum level, or maybe normal. The LDL and total cholesterol in the control group increased significantly (p<0.05), while in the treatment group was not significant. It might be due to enhancement of the consumption of the subject for 60 days. Thus, catfish oil enriched with omega 3 could inhibit the rate of enhancement of the LDL and total cholesterol.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the pace of curing process and body weight recovery of pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) patients receiving propolis supplementation. This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 50 pulmonary Tb patients that were assigned into three groups as follows: receiving standard-dose antituberculosis drugs (ATDs) + 20 drops of placebo propolis (P0); receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 6% (P1); and receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 30% (P2). The results showed that the mean time ratio needed for sputum smear conversion to negative present of acid resitant bacteria in P0, P1 and P2 groups were weeks 10, 8 and 5, respectively. In the second week, mean body weight of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 2.4% and 0.2%, respectively. In contrast, the mean body weight in P2 group increased by 1.5% (p<0.05; Mann-Whitney test). In the same week, mean body mass index (BMI) of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 1.6 and 0.1, respectively. Conversely, the mean BMI of P2 group increased by 0.3. The changes were significantly different (p<0.05). The results conclusively indicated that supplementation of 20 drops of propolis with a concentration of 30% as an adjuvant to standard ATDs for the treatment of pulmonary Tb patients was beneficial to accelerate treatment effect and body weight recovery.

Abstract

This study aimed to clarify the correlation of fructose intake with uric acid level and blood pressure in young adults. This study used a cross-sectional design, conducted in Padang, West Sumatera province of Indonesia in 2014. The subjects consist of 109 students of Medical Faculty of Andalas University, aged 18–23 years old, were randomly selected to participate. Data on fructose intake were obtained using food frequency questionnaire. Uric acid levels was determined by the enzymatic colorimetric method. Resting blood pressure was measured twice using a sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using Rank-Spearman correlation test. The median of fructose intake was 74.3 g (min 23.4–max 160.2). The median of systolic blood pressure was 117 mmHg (min 100–max 145) and median of diastolic blood pressure was 70 mmHg (min 60–max 90). The mean uric acid levels was 5.2±1.56  mg/dl and 25% of the male subject had high uric acid levels. Fructose intake had no significant correlation with SBP (r=0.026; p=0.851) nor with DBP (r=0.051; p=0.712).  However, there was a strong correlation between fructose intake with uric acid level (r=0.660; p<0.001). The study found that fructose intake shows a strong correlation with uric acid level but not with blood pressure in young adult.
