Abstract

Online assessments present several challenges for teachers, particularly in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) contexts. These difficulties fall into four categories: contextual, psychological, pedagogical, and technical. This study aims to explain teachers’ and students’ voices on implementing online assessment of English competence and its washback. It employed a qualitative method and a narrative inquiry research design. Data collection techniques used semi-structured interviews and open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was used as a data analysis technique. The participants were two English teachers and five students of an Islamic secondary school in Semarang city. The results show that the biggest challenge when conducting online English assessment reflects a range of technological, emotional, and instructional challenges, namely poor internet connection, device sharing or lack of equipment, speaking anxiety, unclear instructions, difficulty with listening tests, time pressure, lack of feedback, and technical platform confusion.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need for Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to adapt to the development of information technology without losing the distinctive character of Islamic education. As one of the largest Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, Sukorejo Islamic Boarding School is faced with the challenge of strengthening the competency of its students so they can face global dynamics while remaining grounded in Islamic values. This study aims to formulate and analyze a cyber-based integrative learning design that can improve students' overall competency through an Islamic sociological approach. The methodology used is a qualitative and phenomenological, through field observations and in-depth interviews with teachers, students, and Islamic boarding school administrators. The results show that the implementation of the cyber-based integrative learning design has a significant impact on improving the competency of students, both in cognitive aspects (Islamic knowledge), affective (strengthening morals and spirituality), and social (the ability to interact in the digital space). The study of Islamic sociology confirms that this learning innovation can maintain the continuity of tradition and modernity in a single value, strengthening the identity of the Islamic boarding school as an agent of Islamic-based social transformation.

Abstract

The growing global interest in learning Indonesian necessitates effective and engaging teaching materials for foreign speakers (BIPA/Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing). However, traditional BIPA instruction faces challenges, including low student motivation, limited speaking skills, and insufficient integration of Indonesian cultural elements, leading to suboptimal learning outcomes. To address the gaps, this qualitative needs analysis investigates the specific requirements of international students and instructors for storytelling-based animated video teaching materials that incorporate Indonesian culture. Data were collected through purposive sampling, interviews, questionnaires, and observations across six research stages. The study aimed to identify key elements for BIPA materials that enhance speaking skills and motivation while fostering a deeper cultural understanding. Findings reveal that language needs, cultural background, learning styles, storytelling elements, and Indonesian cultural integration influence international students' preferences for BIPA teaching materials. Incorporating these elements into material design will boost effectiveness and appeal. This study concludes that storytelling-based animated videos effectively bridge linguistic competence and cultural comprehension in BIPA learning, contributing to innovative, student-centric materials.

Abstract

The use of e-comics in social studies learning is gaining popularity due to their ability to convey concepts visually. However, students still face difficulties in understanding the material, as e-comic storylines are often not contextual and do not present real-world problems. This study aims to develop KOMIK ALAM, a website-based e-comic learning media focused on natural resource utilization for Grade VIII students at MTs Negeri 2 Malang City. The research employs an R&D method utilizing the Design Thinking development model, which encompasses four stages: empathize, define, ideate, and prototype. The study focused on prototype development without proceeding to the test stage. Validation from subject and media experts, as well as a readability test with students, indicated that KOMIK ALAM is highly feasible. KOMIK ALAM is expected to serve as a visual and interactive learning media that presents contextual content and real problems to support diverse learning styles and increase student engagement. Future research should examine its effectiveness through experimental methods.

Abstract

The role of Social Studies teachers in internalising the value of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah aims to form a religious character in students. Qualitative approach through phenomenological method by means of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results show that the school conducts the process of internalizing Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah values by habituating students to be moderate, tolerant, balanced, and inviting goodness while preventing evil. Social Studies teachers facilitate the internalization of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah values through the stages of value transformation, value transactions, and value internalization. The limitations of inadequate technological facilities still hinder the Social Studies learning process. The results of this study indicate that, in the learning process, social studies teachers are not only focused on cognitive and psychomotor aspects as learning outcomes, but also should pay attention to affective aspects, which become an important factor in shaping the religious character of students.

Abstract

UIN Walisongo Semarang has implemented outreach initiatives to engage prospective students, but these endeavors often lack data-informed approaches. This research intends to analyze the potential of incoming students through K-Means and Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering techniques. The dataset comprises admission information from 2022 to 2024, focusing on five key factors: gender, admission pathway, study program, school type, and geographic origin. Data preprocessing was performed before conducting the clustering analysis. The Elbow Method and Silhouette Score were utilized to identify the optimal K for K-Means, whereas the Fuzzy Partition Coefficient and Xie-Beni Index were applied for FCM. Findings indicate that K-Means generated more distinct cluster boundaries, while FCM provided adaptability with overlapping clusters. Principal Component Analysis and the Davies-Bouldin Index were employed to facilitate the assessment. The mapping results are displayed by faculty, showcasing regional patterns and student demographics. This research establishes a data-driven basis for UIN Walisongo's strategic recruitment and admissions strategies.
