Abstract

This study aims to examine infrastructure deficits and their impact on learning conditions in elementary schools in the Haute Matsiatra region of Madagascar. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with 45 key informants, including teachers, school principals, local education officials, and parents. The findings reveal that many schools operate under poor physical conditions characterized by inadequate classrooms, overcrowding, insufficient teaching materials, and limited access to sanitation facilities. These conditions negatively affect students’ concentration, participation, and academic performance, while also reducing teacher effectiveness and motivation. The study further highlights significant disparities between rural and peri-urban schools, where unequal distribution of resources reinforces educational inequities. Although local communities attempt to address some infrastructural gaps through collective efforts, their contributions remain limited without sufficient institutional and governmental support. Data analysis using thematic coding revealed recurring patterns linking poor infrastructure to weakened teaching and learning processes. The study concludes that improving school infrastructure is essential for enhancing educational quality and equity in the region.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of Islamic values in the Merdeka Curriculum for early childhood education (PAUD) to foster children’s independence. Although numerous studies have discussed character education and independence in early childhood, research specifically examining the systematic integration of Islamic values of independence within the flexible framework of Kurikulum Merdeka remains limited. Most existing literature focuses on general teaching methods or environmental factors, while deeper exploration of how Islamic values can be naturally embedded to strengthen moral and practical independence is still needed. This research aims to analyze the forms, strategies, and relevance of integrating Islamic independence values in PAUD Kurikulum Merdeka implementation and how this integration supports the formation of independent character in young learners. Using a qualitative narrative literature review approach, data were collected from reputable journals, books, national policy documents, and previous studies, then analyzed descriptively through data reduction, thematic grouping, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The study highlights that Islamic values such as ikhtiar, amanah, discipline, and responsibility can be effectively internalized through daily routines, play-based learning, educator modeling, and project activities rather than as separate subjects. The findings imply that an integrative value-based curriculum can nurture independence not only as a practical skill but also as a moral disposition. This approach offers practical guidance for PAUD teachers and policymakers in developing more holistic and culturally relevant curricula, while contributing theoretically to the field of Islamic character education in early childhood.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum is designed to foster independent potential in students by strengthening Pancasila character, though its implementation still faces various obstacles and is best executed through school-based management. This qualitative study aims to identify the aspects requiring improvement and the specific challenges encountered in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum at kindergartens in Teluk Dalam Village, Tenggarong Seberang District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, with respondents comprising teachers, principals, and parents. The results indicate that the management and administration of education based on the Merdeka Curriculum are the most vital components to address; furthermore, implementation is hindered by the teachers' need for a more comprehensive understanding of the curriculum and the requirement for more complete infrastructure tailored to school needs. Consequently, it is recommended that the government evaluate the curriculum's success to ensure its long-term effectiveness.
