Abstract

Social media have reached a pivotal role in human’s daily lives; it can be a source of information and even a source of learning in the educational field. This study explores the techniques of content creators who use social media to provide engaging language learning materials to social media users. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data source is the os on the social media platform TikTok. This short-form video-sharing media study has two groups: high followers, as many as four accounts, and low followers, as many as nine accounts. There are 20 videos from each group. Each video is identified based on the theory of language teaching techniques. Then, the methods used by high and low followers are identified and described. This study found that the creators with high followers use communicative language teaching methods, precisely information gap and feedback type. Meanwhile, the creators with low followers base their content on a direct teaching method in which they tend to explain and give lectures to their audience. Hence, this finding is expected to be useful for English teachers, particularly in terms of adapting techniques to teach English in real-world language usage and idiomatic expressions often absent in traditional textbooks.

Abstract

Many students need help understanding the concept of green plants, with low daily test scores and learning motivation. Monotonous and less interactive learning methods bored students, while their practical skills could be improved due to the lack of experimental activities. The quality of science learning also needs to be improved because teachers still need to implement effective, innovative methods. This study aims to assess the learning outcomes of green plant material in fifth-grade students and test the impact of the experimental method on improving these results. The research design used was a one-group pretest-posttest model with 30 students taught using the experimental method. Data were collected through pretest and posttest tests to measure students' understanding before and after applying the experimental method. The results showed that the average student learning outcome before the application of the experimental method was 51.33, while after the application, it increased to 71.33. Hypothesis testing showed that the experimental method positively and significantly affected student learning outcomes, with a t-count value more significant than the t-table (3.571> 2.001). Therefore, the experimental method improves student learning outcomes on green plant material.

Abstract

English reading skills are essential for academic success, fostering comprehension, critical thinking, and motivation. Engaging reading materials, particularly those reflecting cultural relevance, like Nias local wisdom, enhance intrinsic motivation and learning achievement. This research uses a mixed-methods approach to assess textbook content with Nias-based texts to assess their motivational impact. Using a Sequential Explanatory Design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative methods for comprehensive insights. Quantitative tests measure reading comprehension and motivation, while qualitative interviews explore students' perceptions. Data integration ensures robust findings, guiding effective educational practices at SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli. The research analyzed texts from the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook ("Little Red Riding Hood") and Nias local wisdom ("Warrior of Sun Hill"). Students scored higher on the Nias text (mean 83.1 vs. 81.9), indicating greater engagement. Interviews with the Nias text revealed stronger intrinsic motivation, such as curiosity, involvement, and challenge. Extrinsic factors, like grades and compliance, were less influential but still relevant. A readability analysis showed "Little Red Riding Hood" as more straightforward, making it suitable for younger readers. The study highlights that culturally relevant texts, like Nias wisdom-based materials, significantly boost students' motivation, engagement, and academic performance, underscoring the importance of incorporating intrinsic motivators into English reading curricula.

Abstract

The teaching of speaking has been challenging for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, especially at higher education levels. This can be affected by internal factors like student interest and motivation and external factors like learners' first influence. One alternative that teachers can use to help students perform better in speaking class is a scoring rubric. This descriptive qualitative study was designed to elaborate and describe students' attitudes to using scoring rubrics in speaking performance classes. This study involved 25 students attending classes at a higher education level. To gain data from those twenty-five students, an observation checklist was used to detect students' behaviour and performance. An interview guide was used to determine student thoughts on the distributed scoring rubric. The observation checklist indicated that the students looked more confident in their speaking performance. Besides, their speaking performance was more organized. The interview confirmed these findings, resulting in students feeling more confident in presenting their project as the scoring rubric, which was distributed in advance, gave them hints on what to do. Also, the presented points for each criterion motivate them to fulfil the requirements to achieve their intended score. The study's findings show that using a scoring rubric in teaching speaking positively impacted students' performance attitudes. Consequently, the distribution of scoring rubrics as a tool to stimulate students' speaking is extensively advised.

Abstract

Learning English has become increasingly vital for informatics and information systems students, particularly as it impacts their academic and professional prospects. This study aims to explore the needs and preferences of students in these fields regarding English language instruction, highlighting the importance of tailored educational approaches. The research involves a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews with 56 students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta and Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. The findings reveal that while students generally feel "confident enough" in their English skills, their actual usage is sporadic, with most using English occasionally or seldom in daily life. Speaking practice is identified as the most beneficial activity for language learning, alongside reading scientific articles and writing. Students prefer interactive and practical learning methods, including regular speaking opportunities, constructive feedback, and collaborative activities. Despite these preferences, students face challenges such as self-confidence, low motivation, ineffective teaching methods, limited vocabulary, pronunciation issues, and grammar and reading comprehension difficulties. The study underscores the need for more engaging and contextually relevant instructional strategies, enhanced learning materials, and technology integration to better support students in mastering English for their specific academic and professional needs.
