Abstract

Obesity has been an alarming global health issue that relates to nutrition intake. In Indonesia, the prevalence of obesity among individuals aged over 18 years showed upward trend from 2013 to 2018 as reported by the Basic Health Research. Obesity is a key factor contributing to the development of metabolic syndrome. Addressing this issue requires adequate education to the public on obesity prevention through various methods. This community service program was conducted in the form of webinars, held on July 4, 2021, and July 11, 2021 on Zoom and was attended by 424 participants. Several topics were discussed in the webinars, including deep dive into obesity, its management, dietary planning, and an introduction to the My Weight Loss Diet application. A notable improvement in participants understanding was evident as seen from increased post-test scores. My Weight Loss Diet application is expected to assist participants in regulating their food intake in order to prevent obesity.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health issue, particularly in Indonesia, where lack of awareness and knowledge about TB hinders efforts to control its spread. In the Manggarai region, Nusa Tenggara Timur, the geographical diversity and limited infrastructure further complicate health education efforts. This community service activity aimed to increase awareness, knowledge, and understanding of TB among the Manggarai community through effective communication strategies. Method: The initiative involved a collaboration between the Faculty of Health Sciences Universitas Brawijaya (FIKES UB) and the Manggarai Health Office. The methods included conducting a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) to analyze the situation, followed by four hybrid sessions of communication training, distribution of TB-themed merchandise, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Result: The activities led to a noticeable improvement in community awareness, knowledge, and understanding of TB. Additionally, several key barriers to TB control in the region were identified and addressed through this initiative. Conclusion: The program successfully enhanced TB awareness,  knowledge, and understanding in Manggarai, highlighting the importance of targeted communication strategies in overcoming health education challenges in regions with limited infrastructure.

Abstract

Obesity is one of the risks of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) that requires health screening measures. Different characteristics of rural and urban residents in terms of lifestyle behaviour have an impact on the risk of DM. One of the risk indicators can be seen from the aspects of body mass index (BMI), body fat, and blood glucose levels. The purpose of this paper is to determine the profile of body mass index, body fat, and blood glucose levels between urban and rural residents. Additionally, education and consultation will be provided. Activities were carried out in the form of health screening in Malang City and Madiun Regency for 1 month with a cross sectional design and total sampling according to the presence of participants. Additionally, education and consultation were conducted. The instruments used include a blood glucose meter, HBF-375 body composition meter, and educational videos. Based on the results of measurements in 20 rural people obtained a mean BMI of 23.11kg/m2 (14-61 kg/m2), mean body fat 27.72% (8-41%) and mean blood glucose levels 89.5mg (75-158mg), while measurements in 15 urban people obtained a mean BMI of 27.59 kg/m2 (16-38 kg/m2), mean body fat 32.85% (17-44%) and mean blood glucose levels 123mg (99-216mg). It was concluded that the mean body mass index, body fat percentage, and instantaneous blood glucose levels were higher in urban than rural communities. This can be used as a basis for educational management to prevent the risk of metabolic syndrome. It is necessary to develop intervention management in managing the risk of metabolic syndrome in further community service activities by taking into account regional characteristics.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with a high incidence and is in first place for the ten most common diseases in Malang City in 2021-2022. The management of hypertension in the community is aimed at maintaining and improving health status by increasing the active role of the community in solving problems. This community service activity is carried out with the "AKSI" (Hypertension Control Activity) program which contains hypertension class activities and the application of complementary therapy to warm water foot soaks and ginger to lower blood pressure. This activity was conducted with 20 hypertension participants who participated in hypertension class activities for 4 meetings. Assessment of success was carried out by measuring knowledge and blood pressure on the pre-test and post-test. The activity results showed an increase in participants' knowledge with an average pre-test score of 60 increasing to 90 during the post-test. Meanwhile, in blood pressure, there was a moderate decrease in systole of 34 mmHg and an average decrease in diastolic of 11 mmHg. It is hoped that this activity will become one of the strategies for managing hypertension in the community.

Abstract

Early childhood educators are one of the main elements in providing appropriate stimulation and monitoring the growth and development of children aged 0 - 6 years so that they do not experience nutritional and health problems, for example stunting. Early childhood growth, especially weight and height, is very important to monitor through routine monthly measurements and determining nutritional status using a growth curve. Early childhood educators face several obstacles in carrying out nutritional status monitoring activities, such as teachers' lack of knowledge and skills in carrying out anthropometric measurements, the use of growth curves to determine nutritional status and limited equipment. The aim of this community service is to increase the knowledge of the educators in Malang Regency, especially Pakisaji sub-district, to measure and monitor the nutritional status of preschool children. Community service activities were carried out on early October 2023 at the Nutrition Department and were attended by 44 participants. Before the activity begins, participants first fill out a pre-test form to determine their level of knowledge. Participants are given education about the correct way to measure nutritional status in early childhood. A total of 39 participants completed the pre-test and post-test completely with an average pre-test score of 43.72 and post-test 75.13, an increase in score of 30 points. It can be concluded that community service activities increase the knowledge and skills of the educators in measuring the nutritional status of early childhood.

Abstract

The Community Service Program (PKM) is one of the main pillars of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, aimed at making a tangible contribution to society. This PKM activity aims to support schools that have not yet joined the Driving School Program in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, which is designed to provide flexibility and responsiveness to the changing times. In this effort, various activities have been designed, including the establishment of Literacy & Numeracy Clubs to enhance literacy skills, the formation of Learning Communities for teacher collaboration, and the launch of SI-Events, an information system that centrally manages school activities. Additionally, a series of workshops have been conducted to support curriculum transformation, covering the development of teaching modules, operational curricula, strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile, creating interactive teaching media, and inclusive differentiated learning. This learning approach ensures that each student receives attention according to their needs, enabling them to discover and develop their maximum potential. The results of this PKM activity demonstrate that proper guidance and practical programs can effectively assist schools in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Backgraound : One of the most dangerous non-communicable cardiovascular diseases in the world is hypertension. The World Health Organization states that sustained high blood pressure is characterized by systolic values above 140 mmHg or diastolic values above 90 mmHg. Hypertension, often asymptomatic, can damage vital organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, earning it the nickname "silent killer." To reduce and prevent high blood pressure, treatment can be pharmacological, involving the consumption of prescribed medication, or non-pharmacological, such as using traditional remedies like soursop leaf tea. Soursop leaf tea is a herbal drink made from dried soursop leaves formed into tea bags that can be steeped in hot water. It is known that soursop leaves can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and possess anti-inflammatory properties due to the acetogenin compounds they contain. Annonacin, muricin, and gigantetrocin are some of the acetogenin compounds found in soursop leaves. The hope is that through training and mentoring in community service activities, especially for alumni and students, sustainability will be achieved, enabling the creation of new job opportunities in the business sector. The objective of Community Service is to socialize and assist the community in making packaged tea using soursop leaves in Sereh Village, Jayapura Regency. Target Audience: The community near the soursop tree plantations, specifically in Sereh Village, Jayapura Regency. Method: Counseling, mentoring on how to make packaged tea from soursop leaves for the mothers in Sereh Village, Jayapura Regency. Target Achievement: Mothers in the community capable of making packaged tea from soursop leaves. The output of the Community Service is the publication of a national community service journal and leaflets on how to make soursop leaf packaged tea to reduce high blood pressure.
