Abstract

AbstractBackground: Biliary Atresia (BA) is an idiopathic progressive fibro obliterative disease affecting the extrahepatic biliary duct with clinical manifestations of biliary obstruction in the neonatal period. Infants with BA are characterized with acholic stools which are frequently unidentified due to daily variations in stool color. Early detection is essential to reduce morbidity and mortality rates in infants with BA. Objective: This project aimed to improve the knowledge of health workers in primary health facilities in Probolinggo about BA through socialization of stool color cards as an early detection tool. Methods: Socialization was conducted to midwives in primary health facilities in Probolinggo with pre-test and post-test methods. Results: A total of 35 midwives participated in this activity. The evaluation showed a significant increase in health workers' understanding of biliary atresia. The average pre-test score was 83.82 and increased to 92.18 in the post-test with a p-value=0.00, indicating the effectiveness of counseling in improving health workers' knowledge. In addition, the implementation of the stool color card as an early detection tool received a positive response from the participants, who stated that the tool is easy to use and helps in identifying infants at risk of biliary atresia more accurately. Conclusion: The level of knowledge of health workers in primary health facilities regarding BA is still varied. Socialization of stool color cards may improve the understanding of health workers to accelerate early detection of cholestasis and improve the prognosis of infants with BA.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a growing global health problem and a leading cause of death. Health cadres play an important role in the detection and management of NCDs through health monitoring and community education. This community service aims to describe the role of health cadres in early detection of NCDs in the working area of Puskesmas Malang District. The training consisted of three main sessions, namely material on anthropometric measurements, the use of tensimeters and glucometers, and training in filling out NCD questionnaires commonly used in community health monitoring. This activity not only focuses on theory but also provides opportunities for participants to practice directly after the presentation session. Although most cadres have attended training, the application of skills in the use of medical devices and education related to NCDs is still limited. Continuous training and education is needed so that health cadres can optimise early detection and management of NCDs in the community.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension are a major public health burden, particularly in rural areas with limited healthcare access. This community engagement program aimed to reduce the burden of NCDs through a comprehensive community-based intervention model involving the revitalization of inclusive Posbindu (integrated health posts) and the establishment of a Hypertension School. The intervention included cadre training, early risk screening, support group formation, and the application of a positive deviance approach. The results showed improved capacity of health cadres in hypertension detection and education, increased early screening in the productive age group, and enhanced self-management among patients. This model contributed to improved quality of life for hypertensive patients and better achievement of Minimum Service Standards (SPM) at the local health center. The integrative approach demonstrates significant potential in strengthening community-based health systems for sustainable NCD management.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve participants' knowledge and skills in diabetic foot care through foot exercise and massage training using Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). A total of 80 participants took part in the intervention, which included counseling, demonstrations, and questionnaire completion. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge, with a decrease in the number of participants in the low category from 50% to 12.5% and an increase in the high category from 12.5% to 37.5%. An improvement in skills was also observed, where foot exercise skills increased from 18.8% to 43.8%, while foot massage skills rose from 12.5% to 56.2% after the intervention. Interactive education improves knowledge and skills; regular programs with healthcare professionals and social media use are recommended to promote diabetic foot care.

Abstract

Currently, parenting is closely associated with the mother figure. Fatherlessness is a condition where a child does not experience a father figure in their upbringing and daily life. A father has an important role in raising a child, such as participating in activities with them, providing emotional and physical support, teaching consistent discipline, and being a good role model. If the father's role is not fulfilled properly, it can lead to developmental issues in the child. The purpose of this Community Service Program (CSP) is to involve fathers in the upbringing of preschool children to address the phenomenon of fatherlessness. The design of the CSP included measuring the development of preschool children, inviting parents to fill out a questionnaire on father involvement in parenting, providing counselling on the importance of father involvement in parenting, informing the results of the questionnaire, and delivering the final report to PAUD (early childhood education) teachers. The program was conducted at a kindergarten in Malang City, with 126 respondents. The CSP results showed that most fathers spent 5–8 hours daily with their children, with high parental involvement (72%). Additionally, children's social development was classified as good. Thus, good father involvement significantly affects a child's social development.

Abstract

The increasing elderly population in Lumajang Regency, especially in Yosowilangun District, indicates progress in life expectancy but also brings challenges related to elderly care and dependency. To address these issues, a women's empowerment program was conducted in 2023 through the mentoring of Elderly Care Mothers, focusing on promoting elderly independence and caregiver support. In 2024, the initiative continued with the development of a Senior-Friendly Park equipped with ergonomic seating, sensory therapy, and recreational facilities under the concept of the Elderly Care Corner. This program aimed to improve the quality of life of older adults, enhance community involvement, and support caregiving efforts. The activities included park construction, public engagement, capacity-building for elderly care cadres, and the development of educational materials for caregivers. The outcomes demonstrated active participation of 75 elderly individuals within the first two months, a 32 percent increase in knowledge among 20 trained elderly care cadres, and reduced workload reported by 68 percent of caregivers. Improvements were also recorded in quality of life scores, particularly in life satisfaction and daily activities. Qualitative findings highlighted increased social interaction, motivation, and caregiver confidence. This initiative has encouraged replication in other villages and is expected to contribute positively to the well-being of the elderly population in Lumajang Regency.

Abstract

Hepatitis B is a global health issue that has a significant impact on society, especially in terms of the risk of transmission from mother to child during childbirth. Health education is an important effort to prevent the spread of infection, particularly among pregnant women. This community service activity aims to increase knowledge about hepatitis B among pregnant women and reproductive-age couples in Gondanglegi, Malang, through two educational methods: lectures and interactive discussions. The lecture was conducted using a conventional approach, where information about hepatitis B was delivered directly to participants with the aid of visual PowerPoint materials to clarify the content. Meanwhile, the interactive discussion involved several speakers discussing the topic of hepatitis B, allowing participants to engage in discussions, share experiences, and ask questions to the speakers. Both methods were effective in increasing participants' knowledge, with the lecture method providing a more significant improvement. This activity is expected to strengthen public understanding of hepatitis B, while also supporting efforts to prevent the transmission from pregnant women to their babies.

Abstract

Hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus are major non-communicable diseases that continue to pose serious public health challenges due to unhealthy lifestyles and low health literacy. This community service activity aimed to empower residents of RW 12, Dusun Sukorembug, Kota Batu through the SEHATI program (Sehat Bersama Atasi Hipertensi dan Diabetes) based on the Community-as-Partner model. Implemented from April to May 2025, the program involved 42 households and included interventions across five pillars: SEHATI PEDULI (home visits and early detection), SEHATI INFO (health education via media), SEHATI RASA (use of traditional herbal drinks), SEHATI TENANG (stress management using hypnosis and herbal foot soaks), and SEHATI AKTIF (physical exercises). Post-intervention evaluations showed increased health knowledge (71.6% for hypertension and 74.6% for diabetes), 100% screening coverage, 85.7% participation in physical activity, and 76.2% medication adherence, along with improved blood pressure and glucose levels. The success of the program was supported by active community participation and integration with local events, demonstrating that a participatory, culturally sensitive approach is effective in improving community health outcomes related to hypertension and diabetes
