Abstract

Dental and oral health issues among the elderly are a significant concern as they greatly impact quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a community service program in improving knowledge and awareness of dental and oral health among the elderly in Dieng Village, Klojen District, Malang City. The program was conducted by the Faculty of Dentistry, Brawijaya University (FKG UB). The methods used included an initial survey, health education, dental examination and treatment, as well as evaluation using pre- and post-tests. A total of 49 elderly individuals participated in the program, with 71% being female. Analysis results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores from the pre-test (M=10.98, SD=4.29) to the post-test (M=14.12, SD=5.19) with a p-value of 0.000. There was a significant difference based on gender, where females showed better results in the pre-test (M=11.97) and post-test (M=15.23) compared to males. Age was not found to have a significant influence on learning outcomes. The program successfully increased dental care awareness, with 80% of participants reporting improved tooth-brushing habits and a 30% reduction in active caries cases. These results indicate that the community service program effectively enhances knowledge and awareness of dental and oral health among the elderly.

Abstract

Entering puberty, adolescents begin to feel sexual urges and an increase in curiosity about sexuality. This curiosity triggered adolescents to seek information and even try to engage in risky sexual behavior. Risky sexual behavior carried out by adolescents will have an impact. The purpose of this community service is to provide audiovisual-based reproductive health education to prevent risky sexual behavior in adolescents. The implementation of the education program in this series of community service was carried out on November 11-24, 2023, with 260 college students of the Faculty of Vocational Studies, Brawijaya University. Participants were divided into two groups, namely the intervention group (health education using audio-visual media) consist 130 college students and the control group (health education using leaflet) consist 130 college students. Evaluation was carried out through a questionnaire to measure parent-adolescent communication before and after the education program. The results showed that before and after being educated, the majority of adolescents had sufficient communication with their parents. There was an effect of reproductive health education on parent-adolescent communication in the intervention group as evidenced by the p-value of 0.041. Meanwhile, in the control group, there was no significant influence between reproductive health education and parent-adolescent communication and no significant difference was found between parent-adolescent communication in the intervention group and the control group. It suggests that while the intervention had a positive internal impact, it was not strong enough to produce a significant difference when compared to the control group.

Abstract

Background:  Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases found in the community and often goes unnoticed until it causes serious complications. In Baureno Village, although health services are available, the community remains less concerned about early detection and proper management of hypertension. This condition indicates the need for an educational and mentoring platform, namely HIPERCARE (Hypertension Prevention, Management, Care, and Education). This activity aims to determine the effectiveness of health education and butterfly pea flower tea consumption in reducing blood pressure and improving the knowledge of individuals with hypertension. This community service programme was carried out in three stages. The first stage was the pre-activity phase, consisting of observation and an initial survey. The second stage was the implementation phase, which included health screening, counselling, demonstrations, and the implementation of the HIPERCARE platform integrated with a seven-day butterfly pea flower tea consumption programme as a non-pharmacological intervention. The third stage was the evaluation phase, conducted through blood pressure measurement and a pre–post knowledge test. The activities were conducted from 4–13 March 2025 in Baureno Village, Baureno District, Bojonegoro Regency, involving 95 participants with hypertension. The programme demonstrated a decrease in the proportion of participants with severe hypertension and an improvement in the proportion of those achieving a good level of knowledge. The HIPERCARE programme had a positive impact on increasing awareness and reducing blood pressure among individuals with hypertension. This initiative is expected to be applied in other communities or villages as a practical and sustainable promotive and preventive strategy.

Abstract

Effective discharge planning is a key component in ensuring that patients and families are prepared to continue care after hospital discharge. Limited use of educational media and the inconsistent application of methods that ensuring patients’ have been identified as challenges in the discharge planning process in the Placida Paviliun Ward of Panti Waluya Sawahan Hospital. This community service activity aimed to implement IDEAL Discharge Planning as a structured approach developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to improve patient discharge readiness. The activity was conducted from October to November 2025 and involved six patients. The method consisted of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation stage included the development of an educational module, standard operating procedures, assessment instruments, and educational media based on six major diagnoses. The implementation stage involved initial assessment of patients’ educational needs, delivery of personalized daily education, and education provided prior to discharge. Evaluation was conducted using a discharge readiness instrument covering home care ability, caregiver identification, medication management, recognition of warning signs, and follow-up planning. The results showed that all patients demonstrated improved discharge readiness following the implementation of IDEAL Discharge Planning. This activity demonstrates that applying IDEAL Discharge Planning supported by needs-based educational media and family involvement can strengthen patients’ readiness to perform self-care at home. This model has the potential to be implemented in other inpatient units to improve quality of care transitions.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that is still frequently associated with stigma and misconceptions, particularly in school settings, which can lead to discrimination, social exclusion, and inappropriate seizure management. As part of a community service, The Epilepsy Smart School program was implemented from May to December 2025 in Malang, Indonesia, aiming to improve knowledge, reduce stigma, and promote inclusion for students with epilepsy through interactive education and seizure first-aid simulations. Evaluation was conducted using a pre–post assessment design involving 30 participants (students and teachers) selected through convenience sampling. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores from 81.0 to 98.6, reflecting a better understanding of epilepsy and appropriate seizure management. In addition, stigma was reduced, as indicated by increased social acceptance, empathy, and willingness to interact with and support inclusive education without segregation. Although there was a decrease in post-test participation and no long-term evaluation was conducted, the program proved effective in improving both cognitive and social attitude aspects. These findings suggest that participatory school-based health education has the potential to create a more inclusive, supportive, and stigma-free environment for individuals with epilepsy.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, primarily associated with not optimal feeding practices during the first 1,000 days of life. One important preventive effort is preparing mothers during pregnancy to make sure they have adequate knowledge and skills to prepare nutritious complementary feeding that provides sufficient protein to support child growth. This community service aim to provide education on high protein complementary feeding combined with cooking demonstrations as a strategy for stunting prevention in Gunungtugel Village, Wonosobo, Indonesia. The intervention was implemented through a pregnant women class consisting of education sessions using leaflet based materials that addressed the principles of complementary feeding, the importance of adequate protein intake, identification of locally available protein sources, age appropriate food texture, and hygienic food preparation practices, followed by a cooking demonstration of high protein complementary feeding. Data collection was carried out through pre and post interviews, participatory observation, and field documentation. The results indicated an improvement in mother’s understanding of high-protein complementary feeding, their ability to identify appropriate protein sources, and increased confidence in preparing complementary foods independently. Participants also demonstrated a better understanding of the role of protein in supporting child growth and preventing stunting. These findings suggest that high protein complementary feeding education combined with cooking demonstrations for pregnant women can be an effective community empowerment approach to improve maternal in implementing appropriate complementary feeding practices and supporting stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

The escalating risk of chronic diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus, Gout, and Hypertension among women is driven by several factors including a lack of nutritional literacy, a sedentary lifestyle, and inadequate access to early routine health screenings. A significant portion of this demographic remains unaware that chronic diseases are preventable through behavioral modifications starting in the productive age range (20-39 years). This community service activity was designed as a promotive and preventive effort using an educational approach. The main activities included health education on the risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of Diabetes Mellitus, Gout, and Hypertension through the CERDIK framework, as well as basic health screening such as blood pressure measurement, random blood glucose, and uric acid levels. Conducted on May 21st 2025, the program engaged 19 parents and 6 teachers from the Mawar Tlogomas Early Childhood Center (Pos PAUD) Knowledge levels were assessed using standardized instrument, and health metrics were recorded during the post-test phase. Results indicated that participants’ knowledge reached good category (92%; N=23). Early detection revealed that several participants had elevated levels of blood glucose (12%; N=3), pre-hypertension (72%; N=18), and elevated uric acid level (20%; N=5); they were subsequently advised to seek further examination at health facilities for further clinical evaluation. Participant expressed high enthusiasm and voiced a need for follow-up programs, particularly periodic screenings and training on local-based healthy food processing.
