Abstract

This study employs a qualitative content analysis to examine Maroon 5's "Animals" as a multi-layered narrative that explores themes of obsession and desire. The lyrics frame desire as a predatory act, blurring the lines between attraction and obsession, while simultaneously raising critical concerns about objectification and gendered power dynamics. Through close analysis of the song"™s lyrics, particular attention is given to phrases and metaphors that invite multiple interpretations. The analysis is anchored in Jacques Derrida's theory of deconstruction, which reveals how the song destabilises traditional binary oppositions, such as predator and prey. This approach illuminates the nuanced interplay of dominance and vulnerability within the song's narrative. The findings suggest that "Animals" offers an intricate commentary on complex human relationships, while also reflecting broader societal attitudes toward gender and power. The study contributes to the growing discourse on media representation and encourages critical engagement with popular culture as a means to challenge and dissect prevailing cultural  narratives.

Abstract

Adolescent education in the Indonesia-Malaysia border region faces complex interrelated challenges. This study explores the conditions of education at SMK Entikong through a qualitative approach, focusing on the real experiences of teachers, students, and the community. The results of the study show that limited physical infrastructure, difficulty in geographical access, shortage of teachers, and socio-economic pressure of the family are the main obstacles to the sustainability of education. Many students have to help their family's economy to the point of being at risk of dropping out of school, while minimal practical facilities cause low job readiness for vocational school graduates. These findings show that the problem of education in border areas cannot be solved with a single approach. Cross-sectoral collaboration and contextual policies are needed to ensure the equitable distribution and sustainability of education in this strategic area.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the changes in gender roles in the Jepin dance in Sambas Regency, particularly regarding the involvement of women in performances that were previously dominated by men. The research also aims to understand the impact of these changes on the preservation of art, aesthetics, and the cultural values of the Sambas community. The methodology used is a qualitative approach with literature analysis and in-depth interviews with dance practitioners, cultural actors, and community leaders. The data obtained is then analyzed using anthropological and feminist approaches to explore the dynamics of gender roles in the context of traditional arts. The results show that gender roles in the Jepin dance were initially influenced by social structures and cultural values that restricted women's participation in dance. However, with social development, education, and globalization, women began to be accepted as part of the Jepin dance performances. Women's involvement not only enriched the aesthetics of the dance but also reflected broader social changes in gender equality. The positive impacts of these changes include the preservation of the art and the introduction of new aesthetics, while the negative impacts include potential cultural conflicts regarding violations of traditional norms. Overall, this study demonstrates that the transformation of gender roles in Jepin dance contributes to social change without eliminating the cultural essence embedded in the dance.

Abstract

This research addresses the lack of contextual historical learning materials that incorporate local culture, which often leads to students' low interest and limited understanding of regional history. Therefore, the study aims to develop a valid and effective history learning module based on traditional values and local wisdom of Sambas Regency. Using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) development model, the study involved validation by 3 material and media experts, followed by a limited trial on 35 eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Sambas. The validation results showed a high level of validity with an average score of 93.03%. Effectiveness testing was conducted using the Normalized Gain (N-Gain) method, resulting in a score of 0.61, categorized as medium effectiveness based on Hake's (1999) criteria. The module integrates traditional values such as  saprahan,  tepung tawar, and Sambas Malay poetry to make history learning more engaging and locally relevant. The findings show that the module increases student participation and understanding of regional history. Therefore, it is recommended as a meaningful teaching alternative that also supports cultural preservation. Further improvements are needed to enhance interactivity and digital integration.
